Robert Parker (RP) : 98 Points (2014)
From vines planted in the 1860s, the 2014 Hill of Grace Shiraz raises the bar beyond the heights reached by the stellar 2015 Mount Edelstone, exceeding it in elegance and (forgive me) grace. It's one of those rare wines that manages to be mouthfilling and voluminous while seeming weightless. Airy notions of mixed spices, woodsmoke and herbs swirl above a mélange of red and black berries and a deep base of black olives and mocha, finishing with enormous silkiness and length.

James Suckling (JS) : 97 Points (2013)
A dry season with reduced yields, but all the DNA is here with a rich array of baking spices permeating ripe blackberries, red berries and plums. Chocolate, plum cake, currants, freshly turned and loamy earth and dried sage leaves, too. Very complex. The palate's smoothly arranged around the fine, long tannins that carry a concentrated core of blackberries, tarry, dark stony flavors, ripe blood plums and a long trail of deeply spicy warmth through the finish. Hints of mocha and expresso to close. Elegant, complex and complete. This is very approachable now. Typically though, it's a wine that is best drunk at 20 or more years from vintage.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 97 Points (2013)
Despite the hot, early 2013 harvest, Australia’s most famous single-vineyard wine is once again a thing of beauty. The nose croons to a medley of ripe red berries and plums followed by eucalyptus, black pepper, pencil lead on a core of damp earth and iodine. The palate slinks with a satiny texture and primary fruit. Charred wood, leather and graphite are knit together with threads of fine, silky tannins. The finish is long, tangy and a touch savory. In this historic producer’s signature style, power and elegance reside seamlessly beside one another. (Cellar Selection)

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2013)
Elegant and refined, but still showing a succulent side, featuring creamy notes of maraschino cherry, raspberry coulis and fresh pomegranate at the core. Accents of sage, tobacco and espresso come in on the finish. Expressive and generous, with polished, lithe tannins. Drink now through 2030.

James Halliday (JH) : 99 Points (2012)
It's been worth the wait, and then some, for this is a flawless Hill of Grace. It's an old cliche, but it's unavoidable: it is the ultimate iron fist in a velvet glove. While the fruit remains supreme, there are savoury tannins to support the 50-year cellaring potential of the wine. It is bottled under screwcap, not the elegant Vino-Lok of past vintages, because you want the most secure closure for ultra-long cellaring. The wine? Perfect colour, fragrant dark cherry/berry aromas and flavours, positive tannin and French oak support, great aftertaste.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 96 Points (2012)
The original vines were 100 years old when Cyril Henschke made the first vintage of Hill of Grace, named for the Gnadenberg Church that watches over the vineyard. His family had sustained those vines while propagating new blocks from the “Grandfathers,” a program his nephew Stephen Henschke has sustained, in part, by marrying well—his wife, Prue, is one of Australia’s leading viticulturists and has dedicated no small part of her career to studying what sets the Hill of Grace vineyard apart and developing selections from its ancient vines. While rarity and demand have sent the price into the stratosphere of the world’s top wines, this 55th vintage stands in that company with the kind of clarity and numinous elegance few parcels of vines in the world can give. It has the weightless concentration of flavor that transforms meaty black cherry, licorice and olive notes into a lasting impression of freshness. It’s also there in the texture, which feels ample, rich and as transparent as fine silk. A great vintage of Hill of Grace, the 2012 will likely be at its best between ten and 20 years from the vintage, and will live well for decades.

Decanter (DCT) : 98 Points (2010)
Planted in 1860, these remarkable 150-year old Shiraz vines unquestionably produce one of the greatest wines of Australia. Its spice, tar and tabasco fragrance is intense and complex, repeated in a super-intense, opulent (but not sweet) palate. Pure black fruit flavours laced with spice are underpinned by an elegant balance of succulence and finesse of texture. Behind it there is a firm, muscular structure tapering to a long and satisfying finish.
