Robert Parker (RP) : 90 Points (2014)
The 2014 John X Merriman is the spiciest vintage to date according to Murray Barlow, due to the cooler growing season that did not go past 30 degrees Celsius during the season. Matured in 35% new oak for 20 months, that spice-box element does percolate through the red berry fruit on the nose, touches of bay leaf and melted tar emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannin on the entry, a fine seam of acidity, grippy and quite assertive at first, but calmer towards the finish with that long spicy/pepper tail on the aftertaste. Give this 2-3 years in bottle. This is discretely classy even if it is just missing that "X" factor.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 91 Points (2013)
Bright, saturated ruby-red. Aromas of plum, mocha, cigar box, tobacco and wild herbs, along with strong exotic oak tones. A much mellower, smoother wine than the entry-level 2014 Cabernet, offering a sexy penetrating sweetness and very good energy to the flavors of dark berries, tobacco leaf, licorice and minerals. Spreads out nicely to saturate the palate and builds on the back end. Tannins are substantial but pliant and integrated. Much creamier and sweeter than the basic 2014 Cabernet but has the balance and structure for aging. (ST) (5/2017)

Wine Spectator (WS) : 90 Points (2013)
A firm, smoky style, with a tobacco leaf and charcoal frame around mature mulled currant and blackberry fruit flavors. Mint and bay shadings on the finish complete the old-school feel. Approachable now, but has enough rustic guts to cellar further. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2023. 3,400 cases made.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 16.5 Points (2012)
Tasted Oct 2015 - 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec. Not as leafy as I expected for this wine - at least compared with some older vintages I have tasted. Much more cassis sweetness. And on the palate that herbal quality is barely there. Instead there’s pure dark fruit and fine tannins. Straightforward and finishes just fresh enough. (JH)
