Region and Vineyards

Magari is produced in the Bolgheri D.O.P., Tuscany’s renowned coastal wine region. The vineyards are planted on two distinct soil types: dark soils rich in lime and clay, which provide power and depth, and white soils composed of limestone, clay, and stones, contributing to the wine’s finesse and minerality.

The 2021 vintage was shaped by a harsh, rainy winter that replenished water reserves, followed by a cold, dry spring marked by two frosts, which delayed vine growth but caused minimal damage. The summer was unusually cool, with fresh northwest winds in July and August allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. This resulted in a later harvest than usual, yielding fruit with exceptional balance and concentration.

Winemaking

Magari 2021 is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, with each variety fermented and macerated separately for approximately 15 days. The wine was aged for 12 months in oak barrels, followed by additional aging in the bottle prior to release. This careful vinification preserves the individuality of each varietal while achieving a harmonious blend.

The result is a wine that reflects both the unique character of the Bolgheri terroir and the elegance of the vintage.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep purplish red.
  • Aroma: An enticing bouquet of black fruits such as plums and blackcurrants, complemented by notes of black tea and Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and thyme.
  • Palate: Dense yet elegant tannins create a structured mouthfeel, while a subtle salinity adds complexity and depth. The wine is fresh, vibrant, and unmistakably Bolgheri in style.

Did you know?

The name Magari is an Italian expression meaning "If only it were true…!" or "Maybe…". It embodies a sense of optimism and irony, reflecting the determination and vision behind the Ca' Marcanda project while adding a touch of playful charm.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Tagliata di Manzo (sliced Tuscan steak): The wine’s structure and salinity complement the steak’s savory flavors.
  • Wild boar stew: The bold fruit and herbal notes enhance the richness of the dish.
  • Grilled eggplant with balsamic glaze: The wine’s salinity and herbal undertones balance the smoky and sweet flavors of the eggplant.
  • Aged Pecorino Toscano: The firm tannins and fruity profile complement the cheese’s nutty and salty character.

The story of this estate’s ascendancy is captivating, full of passion and innovation. The Gaja name was established in the region in the 1850s when Angelo’s great, great grandfather Giovanni Gaja moved to Piedmont and then set up a tavern in the lovely village of Barbaresco.

Since then 5 generations of the Gaja family have been involved in the winemaking process. Angelo Gaja joined the business in 1961, taking over the reins from his father Giovanni. It was at this point that the greatest changes were made and they have been fundamental.

Amongst the key changes and innovations introduced were the exclusive focus on estate grown fruit; the reduction of yields; scientifically analyzing the vineyards; separately bottling the vineyard sites to create single vineyard wines; ageing in small barrels made by a local cooperage from wood kept and seasoned at the estate as well as the traditional bottle; planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grapes alongside the traditional indigenous varieties much to everyone’s horror, not least that of his father.

Today Angelo Gaja and his family create spectacular Barbaresco and Barolo wines from the Nebbiolo grape at their estate in Piedmont alongside their iconic single vineyard wines under the Langhe DOC. They also produce extraordinary white wines with a great capacity to age. They are responsible for some of Italy’s most celebrated bottles which all exhibit the characteristic hallmark of power with sophisticated elegance that marks Gaja apart.

As one would expect for wines of this quality harvesting is done by hand with acute care taken to ensure that the fruit reaches the winery in perfect condition. Ruthless decision making, such as the decision in 2002 (a dilute and difficult year in Piedmont) to declassify the total crop and sell it in bulk, illustrates this well. All wines are fermented in stainless steel, with the reds seeing varying degrees of skin contact depending on the wine and the year. Ageing starts in small French oak barrels, a tactic developed by Angelo when he took responsibility for the winemaking in 1969, and moves to large oak casks for all but the whites and Sito Moresco. Angelo regards the traditional requirements that must be observed for inclusion of a wine in the legal DOC or DOCG quality standards as an impediment to his policy of seeking perfection. Thus the majority of Gaja wines are named according to the vineyard rather than the DOC or DOCG. That Costa Russi is basically Barbaresco and Sperss is basically Barolo is something that must simply be remembered.

Anyone who has had the pleasure to meet Angelo and his daughter Gaia will not be surprised by their success. They have an indomitable will, powerful personality and a total belief in their own direction. Great wines are often a reflection of the people that create them and this is definitely the case with Gaja. Multi layered, fascinating wines with great charm, elegance and longevity. It is no wonder that they are held in such great esteem.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 98 Points (2021)
Pouring a deep matte red color, the 2021 Magari is the most noble and complete of the wines in this tasting and lifts with layered notes of graphite, kirsch, lavender oil, and sweet Mediterranean herbs. Full and complex, it fills the senses with velvety tannins and mouthwatering saltiness. It’s harmonious and quite profound in this vintage, exceeding the quality of the 2019. It really shows the pedigree and complexity that this wine can display and is fantastic now.

Robert Parker (RP) : 96 Points (2021)
The Ca' Marcanda 2021 Bolgheri Rosso Magari is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. It brings forth a floral bouquet, showing subtle elegance at the start. Give it a few moments and the wine hits on all cylinders with integrated oak, bright fruit, black cherry, pomegranate seed, iris root and dustings of oak spice that never overshadow the fruit. The wine is refreshingly uncomplicated but shows refined nuance instead. This is the proverbial understated elegance that Gaja achieves so beautifully. It closes with lovely acidity and dusty tannins.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2021)
Lots of cabernet franc character with currant bush and fresh herbs like basil and lemongrass. Medium to full body, with firm tannins and a savory finish. Some tomato leaf and currant undertones. A blend of cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2021)
Tobacco, licorice and cedar aromas and flavors frame the core of black currant and black cherry fruit in this intense, vibrant red. An iron element emerges too, as this builds to the lingering finish, with fine balance and a lingering aftertaste. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2038.
