Region and Vineyards

Sorì Tildin hails from the Barbaresco D.O.P. in Piedmont, sourced exclusively from the namesake single vineyard situated on a sunlit hill above Costa Russi. The south and southwestern exposure and its amphitheater-like shape allow maximum sunshine, fostering optimal ripening of the Nebbiolo grapes.

The 2021 growing season was defined by extreme weather variability. A snowy and cold winter gave way to a dry spring, while icy winds in early April impacted some lower-altitude vines. Hot, dry summer days alternated with cooling winds, posing challenges such as powdery mildew, especially in July. A much-needed rainfall in late August rejuvenated the vines, enabling slow and even ripening. Harvest began on September 21, yielding smaller, thin-skinned berries rich in aroma and color.

Winemaking

Sorì Tildin 2021 is crafted from 100% Nebbiolo, with fermentation and maceration followed by 24 months of aging in oak barrels. This extended maturation develops the wine’s intricate layers, highlighting its depth, structure, and elegance.

The result is a wine that harmonizes Nebbiolo’s natural brightness with a luxurious, full-bodied profile.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep garnet with ruby reflections.
  • Aroma: An expressive bouquet featuring lavender, plum, cherry, and blackberry, layered with earthy and spicy nuances, undergrowth, and a refreshing hint of mint.
  • Palate: Voluminous and velvety, with notes of sweet licorice, violet, and ripe red fruit. The lively acidity and round, fine-grained tannins contribute to a seamless and persistent finish.

Did you know?

The name Sorì Tildin comes from the Piedmontese dialect, where "Sorì" refers to a sunny hillside vineyard, and "Tildin" is a loving diminutive for Clotilde, Angelo Gaja’s grandmother. This homage reflects the Gaja family’s deep connection to its history and land.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Braised veal with truffle sauce: The wine’s earthy complexity and silky tannins enhance the richness of the truffles and the tender veal.
  • Porcini mushroom risotto: Its savory, umami flavors align beautifully with the wine’s aromatic and fruity depth.
  • Rack of lamb with rosemary and garlic: The structured tannins and vibrant acidity complement the lamb’s juiciness and herbal notes.
  • Aged Castelmagno cheese: The wine’s acidity and refined structure balance the nutty, creamy character of this traditional Piedmontese cheese.

The story of this estate’s ascendancy is captivating, full of passion and innovation. The Gaja name was established in the region in the 1850s when Angelo’s great, great grandfather Giovanni Gaja moved to Piedmont and then set up a tavern in the lovely village of Barbaresco.

Since then 5 generations of the Gaja family have been involved in the winemaking process. Angelo Gaja joined the business in 1961, taking over the reins from his father Giovanni. It was at this point that the greatest changes were made and they have been fundamental.

Amongst the key changes and innovations introduced were the exclusive focus on estate grown fruit; the reduction of yields; scientifically analyzing the vineyards; separately bottling the vineyard sites to create single vineyard wines; ageing in small barrels made by a local cooperage from wood kept and seasoned at the estate as well as the traditional bottle; planting Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grapes alongside the traditional indigenous varieties much to everyone’s horror, not least that of his father.

Today Angelo Gaja and his family create spectacular Barbaresco and Barolo wines from the Nebbiolo grape at their estate in Piedmont alongside their iconic single vineyard wines under the Langhe DOC. They also produce extraordinary white wines with a great capacity to age. They are responsible for some of Italy’s most celebrated bottles which all exhibit the characteristic hallmark of power with sophisticated elegance that marks Gaja apart.

As one would expect for wines of this quality harvesting is done by hand with acute care taken to ensure that the fruit reaches the winery in perfect condition. Ruthless decision making, such as the decision in 2002 (a dilute and difficult year in Piedmont) to declassify the total crop and sell it in bulk, illustrates this well. All wines are fermented in stainless steel, with the reds seeing varying degrees of skin contact depending on the wine and the year. Ageing starts in small French oak barrels, a tactic developed by Angelo when he took responsibility for the winemaking in 1969, and moves to large oak casks for all but the whites and Sito Moresco. Angelo regards the traditional requirements that must be observed for inclusion of a wine in the legal DOC or DOCG quality standards as an impediment to his policy of seeking perfection. Thus the majority of Gaja wines are named according to the vineyard rather than the DOC or DOCG. That Costa Russi is basically Barbaresco and Sperss is basically Barolo is something that must simply be remembered.

Anyone who has had the pleasure to meet Angelo and his daughter Gaia will not be surprised by their success. They have an indomitable will, powerful personality and a total belief in their own direction. Great wines are often a reflection of the people that create them and this is definitely the case with Gaja. Multi layered, fascinating wines with great charm, elegance and longevity. It is no wonder that they are held in such great esteem.

James Suckling (JS) : 99 Points (2020)
Such wonderful clarity and perfume to this with strawberry and candied citrus, yet it’s always so subtle and vivid. Full-bodied and very powerful with lots of well integrated tannins. Makes you stand to attention and notice it.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 96 Points (2020)
This rich Barbaresco shows graceful power, with a fleshy texture embracing its cherry, strawberry, mint, iron, tobacco and spice aromas and flavors. The dense matrix of refined tannins is beautifully integrated, while vibrant acidity drives the persistent, savory finish.

Robert Parker (RP) : 94 Points (2017)
The Gaja 2017 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn opens to a luminous ruby appearance with pretty crimson highlights. This vintage appears lighter in color and concentration compared to past editions. The bouquet delivers a purity and sharpness nonetheless, but it offers less overall fruit. It shows subtle berry tones with blue flower, aniseed and candied orange peel. This very young Sorì Tildìn takes time to open, and it remains on the nervous side even after it has been given ample time in the glass. The best course of action is to wait until the 10-year mark before opening this bottle. It needs that extra time to soften and flesh out.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 100 Points (2016)
The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is a fabulous, incredibly complete wine that soars out of the glass with explosive structure and vertical lift. The tannins are very much present, but also matched beautifully by the wine's aromatic intensity and overall drive. Dark macerated cherry, spice, leather, licorice, plum and mocha add darker shades of nuance. In 2016, Sorì Tildìn is a bit more brooding and bigger than it often is, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. It is quite simply a majestic wine of real grandeur and total class, but it is not obvious. Sorì Tildìn will appeal most to readers who understand what the truest essence of Nebbiolo is all about. In a word: magnificent! (AG) (11/2019)

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2016)
Red berry, exotic spice and a whiff of camphor form the enticing nose. Firmly structured but loaded with finesse, the linear palate delivers crunchy red cherry, pomegranate, star anise and white pepper alongside tightly knit, noble tannins. It's still youthfully austere but already impeccably balanced, with vibrant acidity. Drink 2023–2041.
