Region and Vineyards

The Côte-Rôtie Neve originates from a single lieu-dit located in the commune of Ampuis, in the northern Rhône Valley. This hillside vineyard benefits from a south-southeast exposure, which maximizes sunlight and warmth while maintaining balance through cool breezes.

The soils are composed of schist and mica-schist, interspersed with pockets of ground soil in the mid-slope. This challenging terrain forces the vines to work hard, resulting in low yields and concentrated, high-quality Syrah grapes. The vineyard is certified biodynamic, reflecting M. Chapoutier’s commitment to sustainable viticulture and terroir-driven wines.

Winemaking

This vintage was harvested by hand at peak ripeness to ensure optimal grape quality. The vinification process began in rough concrete tanks, with the grapes fully destemmed. Native yeasts were employed for the alcoholic fermentation, allowing the wine to express the natural character of the vineyard.

The fermentation temperature was gradually increased to 30–32°C, with a maceration period lasting 4 to 5 weeks. This included regular pumping-over early on, followed by gentle cap punching and lees stirring during the final weeks. Daily tastings of the wine allowed for precise adjustments, tailoring the vinification to the nuances of the vintage.

After fermentation, the wine was transferred to 228-liter Burgundian barrels, 25–30% of which were new. The wine was aged for 14–18 months, depending on the vintage, with a single racking after winter. This careful maturation process enhances complexity and integrates the tannins while preserving the wine’s purity.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: A deep, inky black hue with satiny reflections.
  • Aroma: Initial notes of graphite and cold smoke, evolving into nuances of bramble leaves and mixed berries.
  • Palate: Compact and powerful on entry, with chiselled tannins and flavors of black pepper and roasting that culminate in a saline, vertical finish. The wine’s purity and structure define its character.
  • Ageing Potential: Over 20 years, with the ability to gain additional complexity and refinement.

The name Neve reflects the vineyard’s unique terroir and Chapoutier’s dedication to crafting wines that showcase the individuality of their origins. This cuvée is made exclusively from Syrah, the hallmark grape of Côte-Rôtie, known for its elegance and longevity.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Roast Pheasant with Truffle Sauce: The wine’s black pepper and earthy notes harmonize with the gamey richness and truffle flavors.
  • Grilled Lamb Chops with Herbs: The tannins and roasted spice notes complement the lamb’s smoky, savory profile.
  • Mature Comté or Beaufort Cheese: The wine’s saline finish balances the nutty, aged complexity of these cheeses.
  • Duck Confit with Berry Reduction: The wine’s mixed berry and bramble aromas echo the fruitiness of the dish.

History of M. Chapoutier

The history of M. Chapoutier began in 1808, when it was founded as a modest family estate focused on Rhône Valley wines. It grew steadily in prominence, but the turning point came in 1990 with the arrival of Michel Chapoutier, whose bold vision and innovative spirit transformed the estate into an internationally acclaimed name in winemaking.

Michel, renowned for his meticulous attention to detail, implemented biodynamic farming practices as early as 1991, making Chapoutier a pioneer in sustainable viticulture. His philosophy emphasized allowing the vines to express their natural characteristics, using organic and biodynamic principles to enhance soil vitality and promote biodiversity.

In addition to championing terroir-focused winemaking, Michel prioritized inclusivity. In 1996, M. Chapoutier became the first French winery to use Braille on its labels, a groundbreaking initiative inspired by Michel’s close friendship with a blind oenologist. This gesture reflected the estate’s commitment to making fine wine accessible to all.

Under Michel’s leadership, the estate has expanded its influence beyond the Rhône Valley, acquiring vineyards in Roussillon, Alsace, Australia, and Spain. Each new project honors Chapoutier’s philosophy of showcasing the authentic identity of each terroir. Michel also introduced the concept of Sélections Parcellaires, single-vineyard wines that epitomize the unique characteristics of the plots from which they are sourced.

Today, M. Chapoutier stands as a symbol of tradition and innovation, with a legacy built on respect for nature, a passion for terroir, and a commitment to crafting wines that resonate with authenticity and elegance.

Region and Vineyards

M. Chapoutier’s origins and heart remain in the Rhône Valley, home to some of France’s most iconic appellations:

  • Hermitage: Known for its legendary terroirs such as Le Méal, L’Ermite, and Le Pavillon, producing wines of unmatched depth and elegance.
  • Côte-Rôtie: A region of steep slopes and schist soils, yielding aromatic and structured Syrah.
  • Châteauneuf-du-Pape: Famous for its diverse soils, including galets roulés, and complex blends of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre.
  • Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Joseph: Offering fresh and versatile wines that highlight the Rhône’s diversity.

The estate encompasses 1,242 hectares, with 427 hectares certified biodynamic, ensuring sustainable viticulture and authentic expressions of the land. Beyond the Rhône, Chapoutier has extended its vision to regions such as Bila-Haut in Roussillon, Schieferkopf in Alsace, and the Pyrenees in Australia.

Wine Range of M. Chapoutier

M. Chapoutier’s portfolio is diverse and comprehensive, ranging from everyday wines to ultra-premium expressions:

  • Sélections Parcellaires: The pinnacle of Chapoutier’s production, these ultra-premium wines like Le Pavillon (Hermitage) and L’Ermite (Hermitage) are made in small quantities from the estate’s best plots.
  • Prestige Wines: Iconic appellation wines from regions like Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côte-Rôtie, and Saint-Joseph, showcasing Rhône Valley tradition.
  • Tradition Range: Approachable yet expressive wines, including organic labels, that reflect the diversity of the Rhône.
  • International Projects: Wines from Roussillon, Alsace, Portugal, Australia, and Spain, highlighting Chapoutier’s expertise across the globe.
  • Specialty Wines and Spirits: Including dessert wines like Banyuls and an artisanal gin, expanding Chapoutier’s portfolio beyond traditional offerings.

Robert Parker (RP) : 98 Points (2018)
Chapoutier's 2018 Cote Rotie Neve features stunning scents of violets, purple raspberries and cassis. It's full-bodied, rich and creamy-textured in the mouth, turning silky on the finish. Concentrated but elegant, it showcases the amazing potential of the Neve lieu-dit. (JC) (12/2019)

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 96 Points (2018)
A deeply perfumed bouquet displays ripe red and blue fruits, exotic spices and incense, along with a strong mineral overtone. Alluringly sweet, penetrating black raspberry, blueberry, cherry, floral pastille and spicecake flavors show impressive focus and vivacity. Shows firm, spicy thrust on the persistent finish, which features smoothly integrated tannins and clinging floral and mineral notes. (JR) (5/2020)

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 96 Points (2018)
Coming from more mica-schist soils, the 2018 Côte Rôtie Nève was all destemmed and spent 18 months in 30% new French oak. Incredible notes of black raspberries, incense, acacia flowers, camphor, and a marine-like minerality all emerge from the glass of this beauty, and it turns more earthy, darker, and even more mineral-laced as it sits in the glass. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a seamless, weightless texture, ripe yet firm tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and just a classy, elegant, age-worthy style. I'd give bottles 3-5 years in a cold cellar and it should evolve for 20+. 96+ (11/2020)

Decanter (DCT) : 95 Points (2018)
This is gorgeous, lifted, precise and focussed with a lovely freshness. It has cinnamon and rose floral aromas and is exceptionally smooth with very fine tannins and well-balanced acidity. A piercing wine that is good now but will get better. The best vintage yet for this cuvée. (MW) (9/2019)

Wine Spectator (WS) : 95 Points (2018)
A note of sweet bay leaf leads off, followed by dark earth, sweet tapenade and cast iron flavors. The fruit is stashed away, but it's there, with cassis, plum puree and red currant compote notes. A youthfully backward wine that just needs some time to get pointed in the right direction. (JM) (3/2021)

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 18 Points (2018)
More immediately fragrant than their Mordorée, with floral scent, pepper, black cherry and crushed herbs. Delicious purity and precision on the palate, with the black-cherry fruit showing excellent clarity and completeness. A great early sign of a promising vintage. 18/20 points (RH) (6/2019)
