Region and Vineyards

The 2019 Barolo Campé originates from the celebrated Grinzane Cavour commune in Barolo, part of the Langhe hills of Piedmont, northwest Italy. Nestled at an altitude of 280 metres, the 3.5-hectare Campé vineyard enjoys full southern exposure and is planted exclusively with Nebbiolo. The soils here are of alluvial origin with a calcareous clay composition, imparting structural backbone and aging potential to the wine.

This sector of Barolo is historically significant, not only for its wines but also for its namesake, Count Camillo Benso di Cavour—Italy’s first Prime Minister and an early proponent of Barolo’s international acclaim. The site’s combination of elevation, solar exposure, and marl-rich soils enables the production of intensely aromatic, full-bodied Nebbiolo wines with profound complexity.

Winemaking

Crafted entirely from 100% Nebbiolo, La Spinetta’s Barolo Campé 2019 is vinified with precision and respect for tradition. The grapes undergo a 14-day maceration and alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, preserving aromatic integrity while allowing optimal extraction.

Malolactic fermentation is conducted in French oak barrels, of which 30% are new and 70% second-use. The wine is then aged for 24 months in barrel, followed by an additional 8 months in bottle before release. This patient élevage builds finesse, smoothing the robust tannins while preserving the wine’s vivid aromatic spectrum.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Pale ruby red with delicate transparency, typical of Nebbiolo.
  • Aroma: Expressive bouquet of blackcurrant jam, white pepper, caramel, and subtle floral undertones, evoking violets and crushed rose petals.
  • Palate: Structured yet graceful, showing layers of peppermint, incense, and dried cherry. The tannins are firm but refined, with a long, mineral-inflected finish underscored by vibrant acidity and spice.

Did you know?

The name Campé derives from the local dialect meaning “champion” or “winner,” and this vineyard has long been regarded as one of La Spinetta’s crown jewels. It was the first Barolo project of Giorgio Rivetti, and its lion-emblazoned label is an homage to strength and pride in terroir.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Braised veal shank (ossobuco): The richness of the meat and marrow is a classic foil for Nebbiolo’s tannin and acidity.
  • Porcini mushroom risotto: Earthy umami complements the wine’s savory and herbal notes.
  • Truffle tagliolini: A local Piedmontese match that enhances the wine’s floral and spiced character.
  • Aged Parmigiano Reggiano: The cheese’s crystallized texture and sharpness pair well with the wine’s structure and aromatic complexity.

History of La Spinetta Estate

La Spinetta was founded in 1977 by Giuseppe (Pin) Rivetti in Castagnole delle Lanze, Piedmont. Initially focusing on Moscato d'Asti, the estate rapidly expanded its horizons. In 1989, the Rivetti family introduced their first red wine, Barbera Cà di Pian, followed by a Barbaresco in 1995, which significantly boosted their reputation.

Today, the estate is managed by Giuseppe's sons, Giorgio, Bruno, and Carlo Rivetti, who continue to innovate while respecting traditional winemaking practices. The Rivetti family's dedication to quality and their pioneering spirit have established La Spinetta as a symbol of excellence in the wine world.

Region and Vineyards

La Spinetta's vineyards are primarily located in Piedmont, a region celebrated for its noble grape varieties and prestigious wines. The estate boasts over 165 hectares of vineyards spread across different appellations. The vineyards in Castagnole delle Lanze are particularly noted for their Barbera and Moscato wines, while the vineyards in Neive, Barbaresco, and Grinzane Cavour are famed for their Nebbiolo grapes, the cornerstone of their celebrated Barbaresco and Barolo wines.

The estate's vineyards benefit from a unique terroir characterized by limestone and clay soils, providing an ideal environment for cultivating high-quality grapes. The meticulous vineyard management practices, including sustainable farming and low yields, ensure that the grapes reach optimal ripeness and express the distinct characteristics of their terroir.

Wine Range

La Spinetta produces a diverse range of wines, including Barbaresco, Barolo, Barbera, and Moscato d'Asti. Their Barbaresco and Barolo wines are highly acclaimed for their complexity, elegance, and aging potential. The Barbera d'Alba and Barbera d'Asti wines showcase rich fruit flavors and vibrant acidity. Additionally, La Spinetta's Moscato d'Asti is celebrated for its aromatic intensity and refreshing sweetness.

The estate also produces several single-vineyard wines, such as Barbaresco Gallina, Starderi, and Valeirano, which are highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs. Each wine in their portfolio is a testament to the Rivetti family's commitment to quality and their deep connection to the Piedmont terroir.

La Spinetta's logo, featuring a rhinoceros, is inspired by an artwork by the famous German painter Albrecht Dürer. This distinctive logo symbolizes the estate's strength, resilience, and commitment to quality.

Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2019)
The La Spinetta 2019 Barolo Campè Vürsù is balanced and bright with a little more heft and overall fruit concentration. Dried cherry, blackberry, spice and black licorice all appear on the bouquet. This is smooth in consistency but shows a long, polished mouthfeel that is especially tight and elegant in this vintage.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2019)
Aromas of rose petal and stem with ripe plums and cinnamon. Full-bodied and very chewy with plenty of velvety tannins and rich fruit in the finish. This needs time to soften. Savory.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2019)
The 2019 Barolo Campè is a powerful, dense wine. All the elements are turned up, maybe too much so. A blast of dark fruit, leather, smoke, incense and chocolate hits the palate, framed by swaths of muscular tannin that add intensity. In this tasting, the 2019 comes across as a bit heavy and pushed too far with extraction and oak. I prefer the Garretti, at least today. (AG)
