Region and Vineyards

Château Mouton Rothschild lies in Pauillac, in the northern Médoc, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. The estate’s 75 hectares of vines are planted on a distinctive gravelly rise (“motte”) composed of deep gravels layered over clay, marl, sand, and limestone. This classic Left Bank terroir ensures excellent drainage and thermal regulation, vital for the Cabernet Sauvignon that dominates the estate.

The 2022 growing season was marked by consistently warm and dry conditions. Multiple heatwaves occurred throughout the cycle, but early April rains and a significant June downpour helped regenerate groundwater reserves. Thanks to deep roots and resilient old vines, the vineyard adapted superbly to the stress of the vintage. Flowering occurred 10 days ahead of average, uniform and rapid, setting the stage for a perfectly advanced ripening cycle. Harvesting, from 1 to 26 September, took place under clear skies and produced small, healthy, concentrated berries with superb balance and purity.

Winemaking

The 2022 blend is composed of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot, a reflection of the estate’s confidence in Cabernet’s exceptional quality in this vintage. Grapes were vinified in traditional 225-hectolitre wooden vats, allowing for gentle, controlled fermentation and extraction. The wine underwent aging in 100% new French oak barrels, following Mouton’s signature élevage style that integrates richness, power, and precision.

The result is a wine of extraordinary density and aromatic complexity, offering a creamy, full-bodied texture and noble structure. The 2022 vintage is both opulent and impeccably balanced, with tannins that suggest both polish and longevity.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Opaque garnet with violet hues, luminous and richly pigmented.
  • Aroma: Intense bouquet of ripe blackcurrant and blackberry, supported by nuances of graphite, cocoa bean, cedarwood, and white pepper. Elegant hints of spice and liquorice emerge on the second nose.
  • Palate: Full-bodied and sumptuous, with a velvety, creamy texture and fine-grained tannins. Layers of dark fruit, mineral tension, and refined oak unfold with harmony and grace. The finish is long, deep, and complex, echoing the wine’s noble structure and vibrant freshness.

Did you know?

Despite the intense heat of 2022, Château Mouton Rothschild's vines demonstrated remarkable resilience, with roots drawing deeply from regenerated water reserves. The result: one of the most concentrated and balanced wines ever produced at the estate in a hot vintage—showcasing the terroir’s innate adaptability and the team’s mastery of precision viticulture.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Chargrilled Wagyu beef with rosemary jus – echoes the wine’s richness and supple tannins.
  • Lamb shoulder confit with black olives and thyme – mirrors the wine’s depth and Mediterranean accents.
  • Pigeon roasted with wild mushrooms and black garlic – enhances the earthy, spicy nuances.
  • Aged Époisses or Saint-Nectaire – balances the wine’s opulence and salinity with creamy textures.

History of Château Mouton Rothschild

The estate’s origins trace back to the early 18th century, but its modern legacy began in 1853, when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, from the English branch of the Rothschild family, purchased Château Brane-Mouton and renamed it Mouton Rothschild. Despite being excluded from the top tier of the 1855 Bordeaux Classification—ranked as a Second Growth—Mouton would famously defy this hierarchy.

It was under the leadership of Baron Philippe de Rothschild (1902–1988) that Mouton’s status transformed. A bold and modernizing figure, Baron Philippe introduced several revolutionary changes to Bordeaux winemaking: in 1924, he was the first to bottle the wine entirely at the château (mise en bouteille au château), a now-standard practice. In 1945, he inaugurated the tradition of commissioning a contemporary artist to design each vintage’s label—a practice that continues today with works from the likes of Picasso, Miró, Warhol, and Koons.

After a decades-long campaign led by Baron Philippe, Château Mouton Rothschild was officially elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1973, the only revision ever made to the original 1855 Classification—a testament to its exceptional quality and the Rothschild family’s influence.

Today, the estate is managed by his daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild’s descendants, under the umbrella of Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A., with Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild playing a leading role in artistic and brand direction, and Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy serving as technical director since 2020.

Region and Vineyards

Château Mouton Rothschild is situated in Pauillac, in the northern Médoc on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. The vineyard covers 75 hectares (185 acres) and sits atop a prominent gravelly rise (“motte”), which lends the estate its name (“Mouton” possibly deriving from the Old French motte, meaning hillock). The soils are composed of deep Günzian gravels with excellent drainage, laid over limestone, marl, sand, and clay substrata.

This exceptional terroir is ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up over 80% of the plantings, along with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The average vine age is over 50 years, and vine density is 8,500 vines per hectare, promoting low yields and high concentration. Each parcel is vinified separately, allowing precise expression of site and variety.

The estate is farmed sustainably, with increasing emphasis on biodiversity and soil health. The unique microclimate of the estate allows for consistent ripening, even in challenging vintages, and contributes to the distinctive minerality and structure of Mouton’s wines.

Wine Range of Château Mouton Rothschild

The flagship wine is Château Mouton Rothschild, a Premier Grand Cru Classé red wine, typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is aged for about 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels, and no detail is spared from vine to bottle. Mouton Rothschild is renowned for its depth, concentration, complex aromatics (graphite, blackcurrant, cedar, exotic spice), and extraordinary aging potential, with great vintages maturing gracefully over 40+ years.

Mouton Rothschild also produces:

  • Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild – the estate’s second wine, launched in 1993, made from younger vines and parcels not selected for the grand vin. It offers a more approachable expression of the estate’s character.
  • Aile d’Argent – a rare dry white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and occasionally Muscadelle, sourced from a small dedicated vineyard. Known for its finesse, freshness, and aging potential, it reflects Mouton’s savoir-faire in white winemaking.
  • Mouton Cadet – a widely distributed, branded wine originally created in 1930 by Baron Philippe as an accessible Bordeaux wine. It is no longer directly linked to the grand vin’s terroir but remains part of the broader Rothschild family wine portfolio.

Each vintage of the grand vin carries a bespoke label designed by a renowned contemporary artist, reinforcing the house’s fusion of art and viticulture. Mouton is not just a wine—it is a curated experience of heritage, luxury, and cultural expression.

Did you know?

Château Mouton Rothschild’s 1982 and 1986 vintages are considered among the greatest Bordeaux wines ever made. The 1982 vintage, in particular, helped cement the modern reputation of Bordeaux and was a favourite of critic Robert Parker, playing a pivotal role in his career and in Bordeaux’s commercial renaissance. Also, the museum at the château, the Musée du Vin dans l’Art, houses an extraordinary collection of wine-related art and artefacts from antiquity to modernity, symbolising the deep cultural dialogue between wine and civilization.

Wow. The aromas here are so complete with blackcurrants, asphalt, violets, lead pencil, orange blossoms and black truffles. A perfect nose. It's full-bodied yet tied down with seamless tannins that run the length of the wine and give such a seductive mouthfeel and persistence. A vintage with one of the highest percentages of cabernet sauvignon ever. Quintessential, great Bordeaux with no limits. Drink after 2028.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 100 Points (2022)
Moving to the flagship, the 2022 Château Mouton Rothschild is a massive, full-bodied, incredibly powerful 2022 that takes no prisoners with its ripe black and blue fruits, chocolate, graphite, and smoked tobacco-driven aromas and flavors. Deep, unctuous, and concentrated, with velvety tannins, this legendary Mouton is based on 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot that's still resting in new barrel. It will unquestionably play with the top wines in the vintage. Harvest here began the 1st of September and finished on the 26th, and the final wine hit 14% natural alcohol, with a pH of 3.89 and an IPT of 76. 98-100/100

Robert Parker (RP) : 99 Points (2022)
A brilliant wine that likely sits somewhere between the 2019 and 2020 in quality, the 2022 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot. Unwinding in the glass with complex aromas of minty cassis, cigar wrapper, violets and subtle hints of loamy soil, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a layered core of fruit and a fleshy, elegantly muscular profile. Broad-shouldered and seamless, it concludes with a long, resonant finish. This year the grand vin represents some 49% of the estate's production. 96-99/100

Decanter (DCT) : 99 Points (2022)
Spicy liquorice, bitter chocolate, tobacco, cigar, and aniseed on the nose. Round and bright, with juicy, delicate fruit and velvety tannins. Super concentrated yet graceful, layering ripeness, freshness, and stoniness. Controlled power - soft in texture but packed with Cabernet structure. Starts juicy and creamy, then surges with depth and length. Sweet black fruit meets cool, steely minerality, giving complexity and definition. Black liquorice on a sticky finish. Bold for Mouton but outstanding, this is going to deliver for decades. 3.68pH. Ageing 100% new oak.
