Region and Vineyards

Château Mouton-Rothschild sits in Pauillac on the Médoc's Left Bank, where deep gravel croups excel at ripening Cabernet Sauvignon while preserving aromatic definition and structural freshness. The estate's vineyards are positioned on a gentle rise, an elevated "motte" that helps with drainage and contributes to the château's famed sense of finesse and line.

The vineyard surface totals around 75 ha of classic Pauillac gravels laid over sand, clay, marl and limestone, a layered geology that encourages deep rooting and steady water supply in dry years. Vines are planted at high density (noted as 8,500 vines/ha in the estate material provided) and include mature parcels, supporting the wine's natural concentration, aromatic complexity, and the poised tannin profile that defines great Mouton in top vintages.

Winemaking

The 2016 blend is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, composed to amplify Pauillac's dark-fruited backbone while keeping Mouton's hallmark perfume and suave texture firmly in view. Harvest ran from 26 September to 14 October 2016, with grapes brought in under excellent conditions after a growing season that combined a very wet winter and spring with an exceptionally dry summer and autumn.

Vinification is conducted plot by plot and variety by variety, allowing each component to express its distinct character before final assemblage. Fermentation is described as taking place in large wooden vats (225 hL), with maceration lasting 15 to 25 days, building colour, aromatic intensity, and finely layered tannins. Ageing follows in oak for up to 22 months prior to bottling, a élevage designed to frame the wine's density with polish, spice, and long-term cellarworthiness.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Dark, intense cherry red, edging toward an opaque core.
  • Aroma: Perfectly ripe blackcurrant and bilberry, floral lift, then pepper, warm spice, graphite and blonde tobacco as it opens.
  • Palate: Full and dense with exceptionally rounded, silky tannins; waves of black fruit, cocoa and biscuity nuances, finishing long, resonant and profoundly persistent.

Did you know?

Since 1945, Château Mouton-Rothschild has commissioned a different artist for each vintage label, turning the bottle itself into a collectible intersection of fine wine and fine art, a tradition that has become one of Bordeaux's most celebrated cultural signatures.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Herb-crusted rack of lamb: The wine's graphite, cassis and spice meet lamb's richness beautifully, while the tannins feel especially satin with roasted fat.
  • Roast duck with black cherry jus: Mouton's dark fruit and floral tones echo the sauce, and the acidity keeps the pairing lifted and precise.
  • Beef rib with bordelaise sauce: Pauillac structure and oak-borne cedar notes lock into the dish's savoury depth for a classic, cellar-worthy match.
  • Roasted pigeon with cocoa nib and mushroom: The wine's cocoa and tobacco nuances amplify the dish's earthiness without overpowering its delicacy.

History of Château Mouton Rothschild

The estate’s origins trace back to the early 18th century, but its modern legacy began in 1853, when Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, from the English branch of the Rothschild family, purchased Château Brane-Mouton and renamed it Mouton Rothschild. Despite being excluded from the top tier of the 1855 Bordeaux Classification—ranked as a Second Growth—Mouton would famously defy this hierarchy.

It was under the leadership of Baron Philippe de Rothschild (1902–1988) that Mouton’s status transformed. A bold and modernizing figure, Baron Philippe introduced several revolutionary changes to Bordeaux winemaking: in 1924, he was the first to bottle the wine entirely at the château (mise en bouteille au château), a now-standard practice. In 1945, he inaugurated the tradition of commissioning a contemporary artist to design each vintage’s label—a practice that continues today with works from the likes of Picasso, Miró, Warhol, and Koons.

After a decades-long campaign led by Baron Philippe, Château Mouton Rothschild was officially elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1973, the only revision ever made to the original 1855 Classification—a testament to its exceptional quality and the Rothschild family’s influence.

Today, the estate is managed by his daughter, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild’s descendants, under the umbrella of Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A., with Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild playing a leading role in artistic and brand direction, and Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy serving as technical director since 2020.

Region and Vineyards

Château Mouton Rothschild is situated in Pauillac, in the northern Médoc on Bordeaux’s Left Bank. The vineyard covers 75 hectares (185 acres) and sits atop a prominent gravelly rise (“motte”), which lends the estate its name (“Mouton” possibly deriving from the Old French motte, meaning hillock). The soils are composed of deep Günzian gravels with excellent drainage, laid over limestone, marl, sand, and clay substrata.

This exceptional terroir is ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up over 80% of the plantings, along with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The average vine age is over 50 years, and vine density is 8,500 vines per hectare, promoting low yields and high concentration. Each parcel is vinified separately, allowing precise expression of site and variety.

The estate is farmed sustainably, with increasing emphasis on biodiversity and soil health. The unique microclimate of the estate allows for consistent ripening, even in challenging vintages, and contributes to the distinctive minerality and structure of Mouton’s wines.

Wine Range of Château Mouton Rothschild

The flagship wine is Château Mouton Rothschild, a Premier Grand Cru Classé red wine, typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is aged for about 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels, and no detail is spared from vine to bottle. Mouton Rothschild is renowned for its depth, concentration, complex aromatics (graphite, blackcurrant, cedar, exotic spice), and extraordinary aging potential, with great vintages maturing gracefully over 40+ years.

Mouton Rothschild also produces:

  • Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild – the estate’s second wine, launched in 1993, made from younger vines and parcels not selected for the grand vin. It offers a more approachable expression of the estate’s character.
  • Aile d’Argent – a rare dry white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and occasionally Muscadelle, sourced from a small dedicated vineyard. Known for its finesse, freshness, and aging potential, it reflects Mouton’s savoir-faire in white winemaking.
  • Mouton Cadet – a widely distributed, branded wine originally created in 1930 by Baron Philippe as an accessible Bordeaux wine. It is no longer directly linked to the grand vin’s terroir but remains part of the broader Rothschild family wine portfolio.

Each vintage of the grand vin carries a bespoke label designed by a renowned contemporary artist, reinforcing the house’s fusion of art and viticulture. Mouton is not just a wine—it is a curated experience of heritage, luxury, and cultural expression.

Château Mouton Rothschild’s 1982 and 1986 vintages are considered among the greatest Bordeaux wines ever made. The 1982 vintage, in particular, helped cement the modern reputation of Bordeaux and was a favourite of critic Robert Parker, playing a pivotal role in his career and in Bordeaux’s commercial renaissance. Also, the museum at the château, the Musée du Vin dans l’Art, houses an extraordinary collection of wine-related art and artefacts from antiquity to modernity, symbolising the deep cultural dialogue between wine and civilization.

Robert Parker (RP) : 100 Points (2016)
Composed of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2016 Mouton Rothschild has an opaque garnet-purple color. WOW—the nose explodes from the glass with powerful blackcurrant cordial, black raspberries, blueberry pie and melted chocolate notions, plus suggestions of aniseed, camphor, lifted kirsch and the faintest waft of a subtle floral perfume in the background. Full-bodied, concentrated, bold and totally seductive in the mouth, it has very fine-grained, silt-like tannins, while jam-packed with tightly wound fruit layers, finishing in this wonderful array of mineral sparks. Magic.

James Suckling (JS) : 100 Points (2016)
Dark ruby, purple color. Aromas of blackcurrants, black truffle, crushed stone, licorice and hints of tar. Full-bodied, deep and vertical on the palate, drawing you in and down. The structure is very tannic and powerful, yet the tannins are folded into the wine. One of the most powerful Moutons ever for me. Try after 2027.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 100 Points (2016)
Along with the Château Lafite, the 2016 Château Mouton Rothschild is the wine of the vintage from the Médoc and is a truly profound, magical, blockbuster wine in every sense. It’s based on 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, raised in new French oak. Boasting a saturated purple color as well as an extraordinary bouquet of thick black fruits, lead pencil shavings, new saddle leather, and burning embers, with just a hint of its oak upbringing, this beauty hits the palate with a mammoth amount of fruit and texture yet stays fresh, pure, and light on its feet, with a thrilling sense of minerality as well as building tannins on the finish. It’s one of the most profound young wines I’ve ever tasted, and while it will probably keep for three-quarters of a decade, it offers pleasure even today. Bravo!

Decanter (DCT) : 99 Points (2016)
A higher level of acidity than is usual for Mouton is buttressed by waves of fruit and tannin. It's a modern take on 1986 that shows the most wonderful precision of creme caramel, liquorice, blackcurrant, creme de cassis and cedar. it's opulent but also has great tension through the palate - a monumental Mouton that for me has gained in stature over the past two years of ageing. The idea of a drinking window almost feels like a mirage - the perfect moment is likely to recede into the distance time and time again. It could be drunk in the next decade perhaps, but it's going to take 20 years or more to really get into its stride. Easily one of the wines of the vintage, for me this is showing even better than during en primeur. 1% Cabernet Franc completes the blend.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 98 Points (2016)
A generous, pure and lush ball of Cabernet, with wave after wave of unadulterated cassis and blackberry puree flavors rolling through. Features notes of roasted apple wood and sweet tobacco, offset by a long tug of sweet earth, but that’s all background music to the impressive core of fruit, which steams along like a cruise ship with enough stores in reserve to go around the world twice without stopping. Best from 2025 through 2045.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 98 Points (2016)
The rich fruit in this wine nearly envelops the tannins. Flavors of black plums, blackberries and blueberries meld with intense acidity to mask the power and concentration of the polished tannins. With this structure, will age for many, many years. Do not drink before 2026. Cellar Selection
