Region and Vineyards

The Anderson Valley AVA, nestled in the cool, fog-laden coastal reaches of Mendocino County, is one of California’s most distinctive Pinot Noir regions. With a complex interplay of cool Pacific influence, elevation variation, and marine sedimentary soils—notably the Bearwallow complex—this AVA lends itself to wines of freshness, elegance, and textural depth.

The 2021 vintage was sourced from a blend of four emblematic vineyards: Cerise, Knez, Demuth, and Gowan Creek, each contributing to a multi-layered tapestry of flavor and structure. The diversity in clonal selection (including Swan, Calera, 2A, and Dijon clones like 828 and 23) adds aromatic breadth and structural nuance. These vineyards are all vertically shoot positioned (VSP), maximizing light exposure and canopy control in a climate where fog and diurnal shifts shape grape development.

Winemaking

Vinified with a meticulous approach to freshness and expression, fermentation was executed across multiple vessels: 67% in stainless steel, preserving the purity of fruit; 18% in concrete, enhancing mid-palate texture; and 15% in large-format wooden tanks, promoting gentle extraction.

Aged for 13 months, the élevage employed 38% new French oak, integrated with 34% aged wood casks, lending subtle spice, toast, and textural polish without dominating the fruit. This approach reflects Kosta Browne’s ethos: allowing the terroir to shine through while building layered complexity. Bottled at 13.5% ABV, the wine retains remarkable balance and energy, typical of the cool 2021 harvest.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Brilliant ruby with garnet reflections.
  • Aroma: Wild blackberry, violet, and cranberry intertwine with subtle woodsmoke, fresh herbs, and a hint of charred lemon zest.
  • Palate: A vibrant, concentrated core of dark cherry, blueberry, and cranberry is underscored by lifted acidity and silky tannins. Savory undertones and refined oak contribute to a persistent, powerful finish with seductive texture and finesse.

Did you know?

The 2021 harvest in Anderson Valley lasted 24 days, marked by ideal ripening conditions. This slow and steady development allowed for optimal phenolic maturity and expressive aromatics—a hallmark of top-tier cool-climate Pinot Noir vintages.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Duck breast with cherry reduction – complements the wine’s berry-driven profile and enhances its savory nuance.
  • Wild mushroom risotto – the earthy umami of mushrooms mirrors the wine’s forest floor complexity.
  • Seared tuna with soy-ginger glaze – a surprising match that draws out the wine’s subtle herbaceous and savory notes.
  • Grilled quail with rosemary and thyme – a rustic yet refined pairing echoing the wine’s structure and wild aromatics.

History of Kosta Browne

Kosta Browne’s journey began in 1997 with a modest dream and a shared passion for Pinot Noir. Dan Kosta and Michael Browne, both restaurant colleagues at John Ash & Co. in Sonoma County, saved $1,000 in tip money, enough to buy half a ton of Pinot Noir grapes, a used barrel, and a hand-cranked de-stemmer. Their first wine was made in a makeshift facility, but it quickly attracted attention for its quality and character.

The winery gained national prominence when its 2007 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator in 2009, catapulting the brand to cult status. Over the years, the winery grew steadily, adding new vineyard sources and refining its winemaking approach. In 2018, Kosta Browne joined the Duckhorn Portfolio, gaining access to broader resources while maintaining full creative control over winemaking. Today, the team includes winemaker Julien Howsepian, who upholds the estate’s commitment to minimal intervention and site transparency, crafting wines that combine richness, elegance, and precision.

Region and Vineyards

Kosta Browne sources fruit from California’s premier cool-climate AVAs, each shaped by proximity to the Pacific Ocean. These include the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Sta. Rita Hills, Anderson Valley, and Santa Lucia Highlands—regions where morning fog and afternoon breezes extend the growing season, allowing for slow, even ripening and the preservation of acidity.

The winery works with a selection of iconic vineyard sites, combining estate holdings and long-term grower partnerships. Notable sources include Gap’s Crown, Keefer Ranch, Sanford & Benedict, Bootlegger’s Hill, and Treehouse Vineyard. These vineyards feature diverse soils—from Goldridge sandy loam in Sonoma to marine sediment and diatomaceous earth in Santa Barbara County. Vines are trellised primarily in vertical shoot positioning (VSP), and plantings span a wide array of clones, including Swan, Calera, Dijon 115, 667, 777, and Pommard, allowing precision blending and aromatic complexity in the cellar.

Wine Range of Kosta Browne

Kosta Browne’s portfolio is organized into three tiers. The Appellation Series features blended wines that reflect the stylistic hallmarks of their respective AVAs, such as Sonoma Coast, Sta. Rita Hills, and Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. These wines are crafted to capture balance, energy, and a true sense of place.

The Single Vineyard Series celebrates terroir in its purest form, highlighting unique parcels like Gap’s Crown, Keefer Ranch, Sanford & Benedict, and Heintz Vineyard. These wines are vinified and aged with careful attention to detail, emphasizing the nuances of each site.

Finally, the Estate Series represents the pinnacle of control and precision, with fruit sourced exclusively from Kosta Browne’s own vineyards. The flagship Bootlegger’s Hill Pinot Noir and Chardonnay exemplify the depth, refinement, and age-worthiness of estate-grown fruit. While the winery is best known for Pinot Noir, its Chardonnays—including One Sixteen and Sta. Rita Hills—have become increasingly admired for their clarity, texture, and restraint.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2021)
This wine is lively with aromas of Bing cherry, raspberry and clove on the nose. The midpalate has flavors of cranapple-strawberry, cinnamon, orange zest and vanilla bean interlaced with tobacco leaf, spiced bittersweet chocolate and a dry finish. Decant and drink now, or enjoy through 2030. Pair with Peking duck. (TP)

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2021)
Luscious aromas of rose petals, cherry cream and toasted oak lead to a rich palate of black cherries, blackcurrants, cinnamon and star anise. A medium body, moderate tannins and good acidity give it plenty of life and lift to complement the lavish spices and fruit.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2021)
The 2021 Pinot Noir Anderson Valley, matured for 13 months in 38% new French oak, takes some time to shake off its cedary new oak and reveal red cherry, pipe tobacco and garrigue. The medium-bodied palate is chalky and refreshing with concentrated, spicy fruit, and it has a long finish laced with baking spices.

Decanter (DCT) : 93 Points (2021)
