Region and Vineyards

Located in South Africa's Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Bouchard Finlayson benefits from a rare convergence of maritime influence, cool climate, and clay-rich Bokkeveld shale soils. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean ensures consistently moderate temperatures, which preserve acidity and encourage long, even ripening - vital for Pinot Noir.

The grapes for Tête de Cuvée are sourced predominantly from the oldest vines on the estate, averaging over 22 years in age. These mature vines offer naturally low yields and intense concentration. The vineyard's altitude and well-drained soils further amplify the complexity and aromatic delicacy in the fruit, showcasing the terroir with impressive clarity and restraint.

Winemaking

This wine is not produced every year—it is crafted only when vintage conditions align to produce exceptional quality fruit. The 2021 vintage followed a string of odd-numbered years (2015, 2017, 2019) that delivered ideal climatic conditions. Apart from an isolated rain event in March, the season was cool and dry, resulting in slow, steady ripening and phenolic maturity without excessive sugar accumulation.

The final blend is a barrel selection, drawn from just eight barrels, of which half were new French oak. Fermentation is followed by careful aging to allow the wine to develop texture and complexity. Bottled in July 2022, the wine is unfiltered, preserving its natural depth and ageability. Total production: only 2,538 bottles, underscoring its rarity and artisanal nature.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Medium-deep garnet.
  • Aroma: Complex bouquet of black cherry, rose petal, and wild strawberry, layered with cinnamon and subtle essential oil nuances.
  • Palate: Silky yet dense, with integrated oak spice and savoury depth. Builds gracefully to a long, refined, and multifaceted finish.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Duck breast with crispy skin: The wine's tannin structure and earthy undertones complement the richness and gamey profile of duck.
  • Crab or shellfish risotto: The bright acidity and floral lift elevate delicate seafood flavours without overpowering.
  • Thanksgiving turkey with cranberry sauce: A classic pairing, echoing the wine's fruit and spice spectrum.
  • Porcini mushroom tart: Earthy and umami-rich, this dish harmonises with the savoury depth of the Pinot Noir.

History of Bouchard Finlayson

Founded in 1989 by Peter Finlayson, one of South Africa’s pioneer winemakers, and Paul Bouchard, a respected Burgundian vintner, Bouchard Finlayson was created with the vision of crafting exceptional cool-climate wines in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Recognizing the potential of this unique terroir, they combined their expertise to produce wines that rival the best in the world.

Peter Finlayson, often called the “Father of Pinot Noir” in South Africa, played a crucial role in introducing and perfecting this varietal in the country. The partnership between Finlayson’s local knowledge and Bouchard’s Burgundian heritage shaped the estate's philosophy: precision, elegance, and respect for the land.

Today, under the ownership of the Tollman family (since 2000), the estate continues to uphold its legacy of producing exceptional wines. The Tollmans’ commitment to sustainable practices and meticulous vineyard management ensures the ongoing success and evolution of the winery.

Region and Vineyards

Bouchard Finlayson is located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, a cool-climate wine region near Hermanus in Walker Bay, South Africa. The valley’s name, meaning “Heaven and Earth” in Afrikaans, reflects its stunning natural beauty and exceptional conditions for viticulture.

The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean ensures a temperate maritime climate, characterized by cool breezes and significant diurnal temperature variations. This allows for slow and even grape ripening, preserving natural acidity and aromatic complexity—ideal conditions for varietals like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

The vineyards span 22 hectares, planted primarily with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and other varietals such as Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, and Shiraz for their flagship Hannibal blend. The soils consist of decomposed shale with clay deposits, providing excellent drainage while retaining moisture, ensuring vine health and flavor concentration.

The estate also sources fruit from trusted growers in regions like the Kaaimansgat (Crocodile’s Lair) vineyard in the Elandskloof Valley, further expanding their winemaking palette.

Wine Range of Bouchard Finlayson

  • Galpin Peak Pinot Noir: The estate’s flagship wine, a cool-climate Pinot Noir offering elegance, vibrant fruit, and depth.
  • Missionvale Chardonnay: A refined, complex expression of estate-grown Chardonnay, beautifully textured and balanced.
  • Crocodile’s Lair Kaaimansgat Chardonnay: A high-altitude Chardonnay that showcases freshness, minerality, and citrus notes.
  • Hannibal: A unique and iconic red blend combining Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, and Mediterranean varietals, inspired by the wines of northern Italy.
  • Sauvignon Blanc: A vibrant, crisp white wine offering tropical and mineral-driven notes.

Did You Know?

Bouchard Finlayson’s name combines its two founders: Paul Bouchard from Burgundy and Peter Finlayson, a South African pioneer in Pinot Noir. The estate’s iconic Hannibal blend pays homage to the Carthaginian general Hannibal, symbolizing the connection between the wines of France and Italy.

Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2021)
The 2021 Tête de Cuvée Pinot Noir is a well-balanced wine with tart cherry and plum tones complemented by herbs and fresh earth, displaying less fynbos compared to the Galpin Peak. It features notes of wilted flowers and strawberry seeds. This medium-bodied wine is balanced and focused while simultaneously expressing its place of origin and varietal characteristics. It concludes with an acid-driven, earthy finish reminiscent of rooibos red tea. Yum! A total of 2,538 bottles were produced after aging in 50% new French oak barrels for 11 months.
