Region and Vineyards

The Russian River Valley in Sonoma County is defined by its maritime climate. Cool ocean fogs funnel inland through the Russian River corridor, moderating temperatures and creating ideal conditions for slow, even Chardonnay ripening. The extended growing season promotes complexity, crisp acidity, and expressive aromatics.

The 2021 One Sixteen Chardonnay draws fruit from eight outstanding vineyards, including Ritchie, Heintz, and Keefer Ranch, situated in the coolest reaches of the AVA. These sites benefit from sandy Goldridge soils and consistent fog cover, allowing the grapes to develop nuanced flavors without overripening. The clonal diversity—Wente, Mt. Eden, Dijon 95 and 548, and Clone 4—contributes to layered textures and aromatic complexity.

Winemaking

Precision guides the entire winemaking process. Grapes were 100% whole cluster pressed to retain delicate aromatics and avoid phenolic harshness. All lots underwent native fermentations, both primary and malolactic, adding texture and complexity while preserving site transparency.

Fermentation was conducted in a mix of 83% French oak barrels and 17% large foudres. The wine aged for 14 months, including 30% in new French oak, 4% in new Austrian oak, and 20% in wood cask. Prior to bottling, 66% of the blend was transferred to stainless steel for 6 months, polishing the texture and brightening acidity. With 13.5% ABV, a pH of 3.35, and TA of 6.3 g/L, the wine strikes a compelling balance between freshness and depth.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Pale gold with green reflections.
  • Aroma: Expressive notes of fresh mango, honeyed lemon peel, and toasted brioche rise from the glass, accented by a subtle saline undertone.
  • Palate: Sleek and polished, the wine delivers a focused core of orchard and tropical fruit, underpinned by lively acidity. The finish is elegant and weightless, with a beautifully refined texture and just a whisper of oak spice.

Did you know?

The wine’s name, "One Sixteen", refers to Highway 116, which winds through the Russian River Valley, connecting many of the vineyards that shape this cuvée. The average Brix at harvest was 22.6°, preserving vibrant acidity and allowing for a naturally balanced, low-intervention style.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Butter-poached lobster with lemon verbena – amplifies the wine’s luxurious texture and citrus aromatics.
  • Seared scallops with cauliflower purée – mirrors the finesse and toasty nuances of the wine.
  • Roast chicken with tarragon and crème fraîche – harmonizes with the wine’s creaminess and subtle oak.
  • Aged goat cheese and sourdough crackers – a savory complement to the wine’s minerality and bright acidity.

History of Kosta Browne

Kosta Browne’s journey began in 1997 with a modest dream and a shared passion for Pinot Noir. Dan Kosta and Michael Browne, both restaurant colleagues at John Ash & Co. in Sonoma County, saved $1,000 in tip money, enough to buy half a ton of Pinot Noir grapes, a used barrel, and a hand-cranked de-stemmer. Their first wine was made in a makeshift facility, but it quickly attracted attention for its quality and character.

The winery gained national prominence when its 2007 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator in 2009, catapulting the brand to cult status. Over the years, the winery grew steadily, adding new vineyard sources and refining its winemaking approach. In 2018, Kosta Browne joined the Duckhorn Portfolio, gaining access to broader resources while maintaining full creative control over winemaking. Today, the team includes winemaker Julien Howsepian, who upholds the estate’s commitment to minimal intervention and site transparency, crafting wines that combine richness, elegance, and precision.

Region and Vineyards

Kosta Browne sources fruit from California’s premier cool-climate AVAs, each shaped by proximity to the Pacific Ocean. These include the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Sta. Rita Hills, Anderson Valley, and Santa Lucia Highlands—regions where morning fog and afternoon breezes extend the growing season, allowing for slow, even ripening and the preservation of acidity.

The winery works with a selection of iconic vineyard sites, combining estate holdings and long-term grower partnerships. Notable sources include Gap’s Crown, Keefer Ranch, Sanford & Benedict, Bootlegger’s Hill, and Treehouse Vineyard. These vineyards feature diverse soils—from Goldridge sandy loam in Sonoma to marine sediment and diatomaceous earth in Santa Barbara County. Vines are trellised primarily in vertical shoot positioning (VSP), and plantings span a wide array of clones, including Swan, Calera, Dijon 115, 667, 777, and Pommard, allowing precision blending and aromatic complexity in the cellar.

Wine Range of Kosta Browne

Kosta Browne’s portfolio is organized into three tiers. The Appellation Series features blended wines that reflect the stylistic hallmarks of their respective AVAs, such as Sonoma Coast, Sta. Rita Hills, and Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. These wines are crafted to capture balance, energy, and a true sense of place.

The Single Vineyard Series celebrates terroir in its purest form, highlighting unique parcels like Gap’s Crown, Keefer Ranch, Sanford & Benedict, and Heintz Vineyard. These wines are vinified and aged with careful attention to detail, emphasizing the nuances of each site.

Finally, the Estate Series represents the pinnacle of control and precision, with fruit sourced exclusively from Kosta Browne’s own vineyards. The flagship Bootlegger’s Hill Pinot Noir and Chardonnay exemplify the depth, refinement, and age-worthiness of estate-grown fruit. While the winery is best known for Pinot Noir, its Chardonnays—including One Sixteen and Sta. Rita Hills—have become increasingly admired for their clarity, texture, and restraint.

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2021)
Aromas of gunpowder, dried peach and sliced cooked apple. Sea shell. Pineapple. Medium to full body with a creamy texture and lots of fruit but still reserved at the end. Hints of brioche and caramel and then cream. Plenty of fruit and length. Drink or hold.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2021)
Overtly toasty and spicy up front before melting away to reveal a core of apricot pastry, baked apple, mouthwatering lemon curd and honeysuckle flavors. A note of dried pineapple joins hints of tarragon and nougat on the creamy finish. Drink now. 3,700 cases made.

Robert Parker (RP) : 91 Points (2021)
The 2021 Chardonnay One Sixteen, matured for 14 months in 34% new French oak, takes some time to shake off its youthful crème brûlée and allspice tones to reveal apricot, beeswax and honeysuckle aromas. The medium-bodied palate offers powerful fruit and oak spice and satisfying freshness to lift the finish.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 95 Points (2020)
This white comes from a blend of sites that stand on their own as single-vineyard-designates, including El Diablo, Zio Tony, Bootlegger's Hill and more. Together they offer a seamless expression of the grape, a compelling mix of honeycomb, Meyer lemon and crème brûlée. Acidity complements the richness with ease. (VB)

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 94 Points (2020)
The 2020 Chardonnay One-Sixteen is sunny with notes of beeswax, orange zest, and baked apple. It has rich concentration and texture, with a spine of acidity. Notes of Meyer lemon, and almond, and warming baking spice fill out the palate.
