Region and Vineyards

Gap's Crown Vineyard is located in the Petaluma Gap AVA, a subregion of the Sonoma Coast in California. This appellation is renowned for its maritime climate, shaped by a unique geographical feature: a low-lying gap in the coastal mountains that channels brisk ocean winds and cool fog inland from the Pacific. These climatic conditions result in significant diurnal temperature shifts, which slow the ripening process and allow for exceptionally balanced acidity and aromatic complexity in Pinot Noir grapes. The long growing season encourages steady phenolic development while preserving freshness, a hallmark of wines from this area.

The vineyard sits on steep, east-facing slopes between 120 and 250 meters in elevation. Its soils, part of the Goulding-Toomes complex, are composed of cobbly clay loam—well-drained and low in fertility, which naturally limits vine vigor and concentrates fruit character. The vineyard is planted with a selection of heritage and Dijon clones, including 114, 115, 667, and Swan, each contributing distinct layers of texture, structure, and perfume. Thanks to its meticulous farming and site-specific expression, Gap's Crown has emerged as one of the preeminent vineyards for Pinot Noir in California, consistently delivering wines of precision, depth, and site-driven identity.

Winemaking

The 2021 Gap's Crown Pinot Noir was vinified using 41% stainless steel, 34% wooden tanks, and 25% concrete, ensuring a balance between freshness, textural roundness, and complexity. A 6% whole cluster inclusion added nuance, aromatics, and structure.

Aged for 17 months, the wine saw 41% new French oak and 2% new Austrian oak, imparting subtle spice and polish without overshadowing the purity of the fruit. Before bottling, the wine spent one month in 100% stainless steel to fine-tune clarity and vibrancy. It displays 14.1% ABV, a pH of 3.63, and TA of 5.86 g/L, achieving a deft balance of energy and weight.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Medium ruby with youthful brilliance.
  • Aroma: Refined bouquet of crushed raspberry, pomegranate, lemon blossom, and savory hints of sage and fennel.
  • Palate: Sleek and elegant on the palate with medium acidity, delivering layers of red fruit and subtle herbal tones. The finish is vibrant, long, and distinctly mineral—a classic expression of Gap's Crown.

Did you know?

The 2021 vintage involved five separate harvest picks over the course of a month, allowing Kosta Browne to vinify each block at optimal ripeness. This meticulous approach results in a wine of exceptional balance and site fidelity, vintage after vintage.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Seared duck breast with sage and cherry glaze - enhances the wine's red fruit and herbal elegance.
  • Grilled lamb chops with rosemary - earthy and savory, matching the vineyard's signature notes of sage and fennel.
  • Porcini mushroom risotto - the wine's acidity and texture pair beautifully with umami and creaminess.
  • Roasted beet tart with goat cheese - the vibrant fruit and herbaceous lift complement this earthy, tangy dish.

History of Kosta Browne

Kosta Browne’s journey began in 1997 with a modest dream and a shared passion for Pinot Noir. Dan Kosta and Michael Browne, both restaurant colleagues at John Ash & Co. in Sonoma County, saved $1,000 in tip money, enough to buy half a ton of Pinot Noir grapes, a used barrel, and a hand-cranked de-stemmer. Their first wine was made in a makeshift facility, but it quickly attracted attention for its quality and character.

The winery gained national prominence when its 2007 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator in 2009, catapulting the brand to cult status. Over the years, the winery grew steadily, adding new vineyard sources and refining its winemaking approach. In 2018, Kosta Browne joined the Duckhorn Portfolio, gaining access to broader resources while maintaining full creative control over winemaking. Today, the team includes winemaker Julien Howsepian, who upholds the estate’s commitment to minimal intervention and site transparency, crafting wines that combine richness, elegance, and precision.

Region and Vineyards

Kosta Browne sources fruit from California’s premier cool-climate AVAs, each shaped by proximity to the Pacific Ocean. These include the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Sta. Rita Hills, Anderson Valley, and Santa Lucia Highlands—regions where morning fog and afternoon breezes extend the growing season, allowing for slow, even ripening and the preservation of acidity.

The winery works with a selection of iconic vineyard sites, combining estate holdings and long-term grower partnerships. Notable sources include Gap’s Crown, Keefer Ranch, Sanford & Benedict, Bootlegger’s Hill, and Treehouse Vineyard. These vineyards feature diverse soils—from Goldridge sandy loam in Sonoma to marine sediment and diatomaceous earth in Santa Barbara County. Vines are trellised primarily in vertical shoot positioning (VSP), and plantings span a wide array of clones, including Swan, Calera, Dijon 115, 667, 777, and Pommard, allowing precision blending and aromatic complexity in the cellar.

Wine Range of Kosta Browne

Kosta Browne’s portfolio is organized into three tiers. The Appellation Series features blended wines that reflect the stylistic hallmarks of their respective AVAs, such as Sonoma Coast, Sta. Rita Hills, and Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. These wines are crafted to capture balance, energy, and a true sense of place.

The Single Vineyard Series celebrates terroir in its purest form, highlighting unique parcels like Gap’s Crown, Keefer Ranch, Sanford & Benedict, and Heintz Vineyard. These wines are vinified and aged with careful attention to detail, emphasizing the nuances of each site.

Finally, the Estate Series represents the pinnacle of control and precision, with fruit sourced exclusively from Kosta Browne’s own vineyards. The flagship Bootlegger’s Hill Pinot Noir and Chardonnay exemplify the depth, refinement, and age-worthiness of estate-grown fruit. While the winery is best known for Pinot Noir, its Chardonnays—including One Sixteen and Sta. Rita Hills—have become increasingly admired for their clarity, texture, and restraint.

James Suckling (JS) : 97 Points (2021)
So much peach, tangerine and mandarin orange aromas then goes to oyster shell and bark and then follows through to a medium body with lots of tension and fine tannins that take you down deep. Dried orange peel. Delicious and vivid finish.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 96 Points (2021)
A dark red color, the 2021 Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard is ripe and expressively detailed on the nose, with notes of cherry liqueur, pie spices, candied flowers, and sweet sage. Medium to full-bodied, it’s ripe and beautifully textured, with plush, ripe tannins and a long, supple finish. (AF)

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2021)
The broody yet polished 2021 Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard was matured for 17 months in 41% new French oak. It has aromas of blueberry, pomegranate, licorice, iron and nori. The palate is vibrant and light on its feet with nuanced, spicy flavors and a long, elegant finish. (EB)

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2020)
This versatile, well-balanced and attractive wine can be enjoyed now for its elegant, moderately tannic texture and fresh red- and black-cherry flavors, or saved for a future dinner party.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2020)
Lovely coastal cool infuses everything about this wine. Its berry scent and black-cherry flavors have a cool and crunchy forest fruit character without being excessively green. Picked at the right moment of ripeness, the fruit lasts with a rose fragrance, open and airy. (JG)

Wine Spectator (WS) : 90 Points (2020)
Delivers deliciously seductive raspberry and mulberry puree notes, which glisten with anise and red tea as they glide through. Long, silky finish. Nicely done for the vintage. (KM, Web-2023)
