Region and Vineyards

The Sonoma Coast AVA is the largest and most diverse appellation in Sonoma County. Its defining characteristic is its direct exposure to the Pacific Ocean, which brings abundant fog, cool temperatures, and high annual rainfall - often more than twice that of inland areas. These natural elements prolong the growing season and allow Pinot Noir to ripen slowly, building flavor complexity while retaining fresh acidity.

For the 2021 vintage, Kosta Browne selected fruit from eight vineyards spread across both the northern coastal zone and the southern reaches of the AVA. Notable sites include Treehouse, Thorn Ridge, Gap’s Crown, and Mardikian, each contributing unique elements to the final blend. The vines are rooted in Goldridge loam, a sandy, well-drained soil ideal for Pinot Noir, and are trained using vertical shoot positioning (VSP) to maximize sunlight exposure and canopy airflow. A diverse clonal selection—featuring Swan, Calera, Pommard, Dijon 113 to 115, and more—adds aromatic range and depth to the cuvée.

Winemaking

Vinification for this wine emphasizes vibrancy, texture, and complexity. The must was fermented using 81% stainless steel for freshness, 11% in wooden vats for depth, and 8% in concrete to enhance mid-palate weight. A minimal 1% whole cluster inclusion brings subtle structure and lifted aromatics.

The wine was matured for 15 months, with 38% in new French oak, 11% in large-format wood casks, and a touch (1%) in new Austrian oak. This measured approach to oak preserves the wine’s varietal purity and accentuates its site-specific character. Bottled at 14.1% ABV, with a pH of 3.62 and total acidity of 5.6 g/L, the 2021 vintage displays admirable balance and age-worthy structure.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep ruby with glowing violet edges.
  • Aroma: Lifted aromatics of boysenberry, blueberry, and fresh-cut strawberry mingle with subtle hints of forest rain and earth.
  • Palate: Silky and polished, with vibrant dark berry flavors, smooth tannins, and a resonant finish. The wine’s freshness and harmony underscore its cool-climate origins.

Did you know?

In 2021, the harvest period was nearly a month shorter than in the previous year, due to a more compressed ripening cycle. This shorter window resulted in concentrated flavors and ripe tannins, reflecting the intensity and clarity of the vintage across Sonoma’s coastal vineyards.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Duck confit with cherry compote – highlights the wine’s red and blue fruit character and supple tannins.
  • Grilled salmon with wild herbs – pairs with the wine’s freshness and savory depth.
  • Porcini and truffle pasta – complements the earthy undertones and vibrant acidity.
  • Roasted quail with blackberry reduction – enhances the wine’s dark fruit and elegant structure.

History of Kosta Browne

Kosta Browne’s journey began in 1997 with a modest dream and a shared passion for Pinot Noir. Dan Kosta and Michael Browne, both restaurant colleagues at John Ash & Co. in Sonoma County, saved $1,000 in tip money, enough to buy half a ton of Pinot Noir grapes, a used barrel, and a hand-cranked de-stemmer. Their first wine was made in a makeshift facility, but it quickly attracted attention for its quality and character.

The winery gained national prominence when its 2007 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator in 2009, catapulting the brand to cult status. Over the years, the winery grew steadily, adding new vineyard sources and refining its winemaking approach. In 2018, Kosta Browne joined the Duckhorn Portfolio, gaining access to broader resources while maintaining full creative control over winemaking. Today, the team includes winemaker Julien Howsepian, who upholds the estate’s commitment to minimal intervention and site transparency, crafting wines that combine richness, elegance, and precision.

Region and Vineyards

Kosta Browne sources fruit from California’s premier cool-climate AVAs, each shaped by proximity to the Pacific Ocean. These include the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Sta. Rita Hills, Anderson Valley, and Santa Lucia Highlands—regions where morning fog and afternoon breezes extend the growing season, allowing for slow, even ripening and the preservation of acidity.

The winery works with a selection of iconic vineyard sites, combining estate holdings and long-term grower partnerships. Notable sources include Gap’s Crown, Keefer Ranch, Sanford & Benedict, Bootlegger’s Hill, and Treehouse Vineyard. These vineyards feature diverse soils—from Goldridge sandy loam in Sonoma to marine sediment and diatomaceous earth in Santa Barbara County. Vines are trellised primarily in vertical shoot positioning (VSP), and plantings span a wide array of clones, including Swan, Calera, Dijon 115, 667, 777, and Pommard, allowing precision blending and aromatic complexity in the cellar.

Wine Range of Kosta Browne

Kosta Browne’s portfolio is organized into three tiers. The Appellation Series features blended wines that reflect the stylistic hallmarks of their respective AVAs, such as Sonoma Coast, Sta. Rita Hills, and Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. These wines are crafted to capture balance, energy, and a true sense of place.

The Single Vineyard Series celebrates terroir in its purest form, highlighting unique parcels like Gap’s Crown, Keefer Ranch, Sanford & Benedict, and Heintz Vineyard. These wines are vinified and aged with careful attention to detail, emphasizing the nuances of each site.

Finally, the Estate Series represents the pinnacle of control and precision, with fruit sourced exclusively from Kosta Browne’s own vineyards. The flagship Bootlegger’s Hill Pinot Noir and Chardonnay exemplify the depth, refinement, and age-worthiness of estate-grown fruit. While the winery is best known for Pinot Noir, its Chardonnays—including One Sixteen and Sta. Rita Hills—have become increasingly admired for their clarity, texture, and restraint.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 94 Points (2021)
The 2021 Pinot Noir is sourced from several sites across the Anderson Valley, including KB's estate Cerise Vineyard. It opens with a reductive nose of floral rose and sage, showing rustic tannins that evolve to reveal an elegant, tightly wound structure of finesse and fruity intensity.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2021)
Aromas of umami, seaweed, mushroom and bark follow through to a medium body, with firm and fine velvety tannins and a flavorful finish with a salty undertone at the end. Oyster shell. Drink now.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2021)
The 2021 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast was matured in 39% new oak for 15 months. The nose opens slowly from allspice and brown sugar to a core of red cherry and cranberry, tea leaves and lavender. The medium-bodied palate offers surprisingly concentrated fruit supported by grainy tannins and seamless freshness, and it has a long, spicy finish.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2020)
A lush, ripe style, with creamed plum and raspberry puree gliding through easily, flanked by lightly singed anise and mesquite. Shows a suave brushstroke of black tea on the finish. For the fruit bomb crowd. Drink now

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 92 Points (2020)
Cool and generous, this starts as a tight, floral pinot with some smoke at the edges. Notes of wildflowers and wild herbs along with wild-blueberry scents mark its freshness. The cold fruit tannins turn gentler with air, clean and lasting, suggesting this has the stamina to age. (JG)
