Region and Vineyards

This wine is crafted from grapes grown on DAOU Mountain and select superior vineyards in the Paso Robles AVA, a region renowned for its calcareous soils and Mediterranean climate. Perched at high elevations in the Adelaida District, DAOU Mountain benefits from dramatic diurnal temperature shifts that enhance the complexity and balance of its wines.

The growing season began with a winter drought, which was alleviated by timely rains in late March and April. These rains rejuvenated the vines, enabling healthy canopy growth and setting the stage for a vintage of exceptional balance. A later bud break led to a warm summer and an intense 10-day heatwave in early September, prompting an early harvest that tested the winemaking team’s skill. The result was a “winemaker’s vintage,” producing whites of remarkable elegance and depth.

Winemaking

The Reserve Chardonnay is a testament to Daniel Daou’s precision and expertise. After a careful selection of the finest lots, the wine was aged for 11 months in 50% new French oak barrels, contributing to its luxurious texture and integrated oak nuances. The cool climate of the vineyards preserved the wine’s natural acidity, while the oak aging imparted subtle complexity and roundness.

The result is a Chardonnay that balances richness and freshness, showcasing the best of Paso Robles terroir with a modern, refined style. Its 14.7% alcohol content supports its opulent profile while maintaining vibrancy and elegance.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Light golden-straw hue with brilliant clarity.
  • Aromas: Delicate yet expressive, featuring jasmine, honeysuckle, and pineapple, enriched by layers of caramel and honey.
  • Palate: Smooth and plush, revealing flavors of tropical fruit, hazelnut, almond, and vanilla. The wine’s creamy texture is balanced by a vibrant acidity, leading to a beautifully rounded and lingering finish.

Did you know?

DAOU Reserve wines, including this Chardonnay, represent the culmination of the Daou family’s commitment to producing world-class wines. Their estate, described by André Tchelistcheff as “a jewel of ecological elements,” exemplifies the perfect synergy of geology, microclimate, and craftsmanship.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Lobster tail with drawn butter: Enhances the wine’s richness and tropical fruit notes.
  • Pan-seared scallops with lemon beurre blanc: Balances its acidity with a creamy, citrusy complement.
  • Roast chicken with truffle cream sauce: Matches its luxurious texture and nutty flavors.
  • Camembert cheese with toasted almonds: Complements its hazelnut and vanilla undertones.

History of DAOU Vineyards

The story of DAOU Vineyards began with Georges and Daniel Daou, who immigrated to the United States from Lebanon. Inspired by their father Joseph Daou, a man of vision and courage, the brothers dreamed of creating a winery that would rival the greatest in the world. After achieving success in the tech industry, they sold their company in 1998 and dedicated themselves to their true passion: winemaking.

In 2007, they discovered the extraordinary terroir of what would become DAOU Mountain, a 100-hectare estate perched at 670 meters (2,200 feet) above sea level in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles. The property, once owned by André Tchelistcheff, was renowned for its calcareous clay soils, steep slopes, and Mediterranean climate—ideal for cultivating Bordeaux varietals. The Daou brothers reimagined the site, planting high-density vineyards and building a state-of-the-art winery.

Guided by a shared vision, Georges leads the business operations while Daniel, a trained winemaker, focuses on crafting wines of distinction. Over the years, their dedication to innovation, sustainable practices, and excellence has made DAOU Vineyards a benchmark producer in California.

Region and Vineyards

DAOU Mountain, located in the Paso Robles AVA, is one of the most unique and prestigious vineyard sites in California. Its calcareous clay soils, similar to those found in Bordeaux, provide excellent drainage and impart a distinct minerality to the wines. The high elevation and steep slopes create dramatic diurnal temperature shifts, with cool nights preserving acidity and warm days ensuring optimal ripening.

The Adelaida District’s climate is influenced by Pacific Ocean breezes, fostering balanced and complex wines. The vineyards are planted with Bordeaux varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec, as well as select white varietals like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The estate employs sustainable farming practices, reflecting the Daou family’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Wine Range of DAOU Vineyards

DAOU Vineyards offers a diverse portfolio, crafted with precision and passion:

  • Patrimony: The flagship label representing the pinnacle of winemaking, featuring ultra-premium Cabernet Sauvignon and blends.
  • Reserve Wines: Highlighting the best vineyard blocks, these wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Bordeaux-style blends.

  • Bodyguard: A celebration of approachability and finesse, with a focus on varietal wines like Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Did you know?

The Daou brothers describe DAOU Mountain as “a jewel of ecological elements,” a phrase originally coined by legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff. The estate’s calcareous soils, reminiscent of those in Bordeaux, inspired their vision to create wines that could stand among the world’s best.

A golden hue in the glass, this bottling offers baked lemon and rich hazelnut aromas on the nose. The palate is full of rich and savory flavors of sea salt, peach, lemon cake and more hazelnut, perfect for those seeking some power in their Chard.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2019)
Ripe and sweet fruit aromas of apples, limes and green papaya with some vanilla. Some caramel undertones. Full-bodied, yet tight and compact palate. Flavorful finish. It opens nicely on the finish with lots of wood, vanilla, toffee and ripe-apple flavors. Drink or hold.

Connoisseurs' Guide (CG) : 91 Points (2019)
Daou’s rich and outgoing 2019 Reserve Chardonnay immediately impresses with its aromatic breadth and depth and needs no coaxing to reveal layer upon layer of ripe apples, peaches and lovely, toasted brioche sweetness. Running true to its nose with respect to layered richness and fruity largesse on the palate yet beautifully proportioned and just as well-balanced as it is rich, this is a wholly satisfying wine at the moment, its tender age notwithstanding. We would not argue with those who choose to enjoy it in short order, but it is destined to age famously and in no way demands hasty drinking
