Region and Vineyards
Huilkrans originates from the Oudam farm in the Citrusdal Mountain appellation, also known as Skurfberg. This remote and exceptional site is characterized by its deep red sand over red clay soils, low rainfall, and isolation in the mountains. The vines are planted on a gentle southern slope at 450 meters above sea level, fostering a cooler microclimate that enhances aromatic complexity.
The old bush vines, planted between 1974 and 1989, are low-density and dry-farmed, producing tiny yields of approximately 1.5 tons per hectare. This challenging yet rewarding terroir allows the wine to express a unique balance of richness and precision.
Winemaking
The grapes for Huilkrans were hand-sorted and whole-bunch pressed, with the juice left intentionally cloudy. The juice underwent wild fermentation in large foudres and old barrels of various sizes, primarily 400 liters. This natural fermentation lasted about one month, highlighting the purity of the fruit.
The wine was aged on its lees for approximately 12 months, followed by a further six months in tanks on fine lees, without fining or unnecessary intervention. This minimalist approach results in a wine of remarkable depth and energy, true to its origins.

Did you know?
The name Huilkrans, meaning "weeping cliff," refers to a natural feature on the Oudam farm that appears to weep during rain. Following the untimely passing of Kallie Visser, son of the farm’s owners, the name took on a poignant double meaning. The wine’s label pays homage to Kallie’s memory.
