Penfolds Bin 28 offers a showcase of warm-climate Australian Shiraz – ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna Vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented. It provides a substantial proportion of the fruit for this vintage.

Color: Deep, black-cherry red.

Nose: In a word, Shiraz. Style? Unhesitant, warm(er)-climate. Generous, distinctive. An initial lift of coffee grind, mocha/malt and spice sequentially volatilize, consorting to form an initial aromatic wave. Then, ascending elements of dark chocolate, black licorice, European dark-berry fruit salad with an emphasis on the dark/black! No new oak? Not part of the Bin 28 mindset. Yet so much more lies beneath...

Palate: Full-bodied and multi-dimensional. An assortment of flavors, including blackcurrant, dates, beef and stout pie, dried fig. Expansive – length, depth and weight.. reverberating with amplitude and attitude!
Mid-palate fruit sweetness, aligned with solid/firm tannins, culminating in a long, lingering finish.

Robert Parker (RP) : 94+ Points (2020)
The Barossa has the ability to convey a sense of place, dirt and air in the glass. The trick is to not get in the way—a cooper does not terroir make. Despite not being the dominant region in this blend (for specificity: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley), the Barossa makes a potent contribution. Here, in the 2020 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, the concentrated, dry and warm vintage is on show and provides a splay of earthy, dense fruit, stretched over a framework of savory tannin. Despite Penfolds's reputation for big tannins/big oak, the fruit here overpowers both and streams out over the long finish. The heart of Barossa is here. Very good. Will get better.

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 95 Points (2019)
From McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully. Aged in seasoned American hogsheads with an emphasis of fruit rather than oak character. Lush, sumptuous dark berry and ripe plum flavours, with a suggestion of Christmas cake character and roast chestnut. Very approachable now. *Gold* (BC) (11/2021)

Decanter (DCT) : 94 Points (2019)
Clearly defining what many customers expect from a conventional Australian Shiraz, this has sunny, fresh and vibrant fruit aromas and flavours swirling in the glass: big blackberry in an embrace with satsuma plum. Generous in body without being flabby, the disciplined oak and tannin regime pulls the belly taut to ensure the palate finishes clean and lean. Say yes to another glass – especially as it offers very good value. (DS) (6/2021)

James Halliday (JH) : 93 Points (2019)
McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully fruit. Matured 12 months in seasoned American oak hogsheads. Classic Bin 28. Layers of black fruits, well supported by American oak and nuanced with a hint of smoked charcuterie. Fine-grained tannins support a finish of good length. (TS) (8/2021)

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 91 Points (2019)
Focused on warm-climate shiraz, Bin 28 originated in 1959 as a wine from Penfolds’ Kalimna Vineyard in the Barossa, but now includes a range of fruit sources. That fruit comes in layers of juicy black cherry, raspberry and blackberry—as Tastings Editor Corey Warren said, 'There’s intensity in the colors.' While it’s heady and rich, the wine finishes dry, undergirded by earthy tannins with the light bitterness of flower petals. (2/2022)

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2018)
A strong vintage for warmer-climate shiraz and this wine is certainly reaping the benefits. The nose has such eclectic fruit aromas that run a full spectrum, from the lighter spiced red-fruit aromas to red plums, through blue fruit to darker blackberries and plums. The palate has impressively layered flavors that run the same broad spectrum as seen on the nose and the tannins are so well groomed and run very, very long. Holds fruit flavor deep. Will age very well for 15-plus years. Drink or hold.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2018)
Shows terrific concentration, with dense and chewy tannins providing an appealing backdrop to the blueberry, dried cherry, date and candied ginger flavors. Tobacco, tomato leaf and espresso notes linger on the finish. Drink now through 2030.
