Region and Vineyards

L'Aventure is based on the west side of Paso Robles, in California's Central Coast, where Stephan Asseo settled after leaving Bordeaux in 1998 in search of greater creative freedom. The estate's 127-acre property is defined by sloping hills, varied elevations, complex soils and excellent drainage, all central to the concentrated yet balanced fruit that shapes the house style.

For Her 2017 comes from 100% estate-grown fruit from L'Aventure Vineyard, planted at very high density with more than 2,000 vines per acre. The wine is identified by Vinous as coming from Willow Creek District, Paso Robles, an AVA known for cooler conditions within Paso Robles, coastal fog, ocean breezes, limestone-influenced soils and dramatic mountainous topography.

Winemaking

L'Aventure For Her 2017 is a co-fermented blend of 54% Syrah from Hill Top Block, 32% Graciano and 14% Viognier. Syrah provides dark fruit, depth and savoury spice; Graciano adds colour, acidity and tension; Viognier contributes floral perfume, exotic lift and a polished aromatic edge. The wine was bottled in March 2019 and made as a wine club exclusive.

Ageing lasted 14 months in French oak, with 40% new barrels and 60% one-year-old barrels, and malolactic fermentation took place in barrel. The wine was bottled with no fining and no filtering, preserving density and texture. The estate gives For Her a drinking horizon of 20+ years, while the 2017 reds were described by Stephan Asseo as classic, silky, expressive and balanced.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep violet-ruby, nearly glass-staining, with a saturated core and youthful brightness that reflects both concentration and vitality.
  • Aroma: Blackberry, boysenberry, blueberry jam and baked black fruits unfold with candied violet, ground pepper, melted licorice, incense, blood orange, charcuterie, grapefruit peel and exotic spice.
  • Palate: Full-bodied, silky and layered, with ripe black and blue fruits, cherry liqueur, citrus-floral lift, mineral spice and powdery tannins. The finish is long, focused and vibrant, balancing Paso Robles richness with freshness and aromatic finesse.

Did you know?

For Her was first produced in 2013 and is named for Stephan Asseo's wife, Beatrice. L'Aventure presents it as a very small-production, wine club exclusive cuvée, always co-fermented from Syrah, Graciano and Viognier, designed to be full-bodied, vibrant, pure and gorgeously balanced.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Grilled ribeye with black pepper crust: The wine's Syrah richness, pepper notes and tannic structure match the char, fat and savoury depth of the steak.
  • Braised short ribs with licorice and star anise: Slow-cooked beef amplifies the wine's dark fruit and texture, while the spices echo its exotic aromatic profile.
  • Duck breast with blood orange glaze: The wine's citrus accents, violet notes and blue fruit character complement the glaze and bring freshness to the richness of duck.
  • Wild mushroom and black garlic risotto: Earthy mushrooms and umami depth draw out the wine's mineral, incense and savoury charcuterie nuances.

History of L’Aventure

The story of L’Aventure begins with Stephan Asseo, a classically trained French winemaker who, after graduating from the École Œnologique de Bordeaux, spent nearly two decades producing wine in Saint-Émilion and Côtes de Castillon. As the owner of Domaine de Courteillac, Asseo achieved critical success but found himself creatively constrained by the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system. Frustrated by its strict varietal, yield, and winemaking regulations, he envisioned a place where he could freely express his style.

In 1996, after three years of global vineyard exploration—from South America to South Africa and the Napa Valley—he discovered Paso Robles, then an emerging but underrated wine region. The area’s limestone soils, Mediterranean climate, and vast stylistic potential reminded him of Bordeaux, but with fewer limits. Asseo purchased land on the west side of Paso Robles in 1998, cleared it himself, and began planting vines with high density, following European viticultural principles. From its first vintages, L’Aventure gained recognition for producing wines that combined Old World elegance with New World richness, earning praise from critics such as Robert Parker and multiple 100-point scores. Today, the estate is family-run, with Stephan’s daughter Chloé Asseo playing a growing role in both business and viticulture.

Region and Vineyards

L’Aventure is located in the Adelaida District, on the west side of Paso Robles AVA, where the Santa Lucia Mountains begin to roll inland. This subregion is distinct for its elevated topography (up to 500 meters) and high concentrations of calcareous shale and limestone, rare in California and highly prized for their ability to retain water and reflect heat. These soils limit vine vigor and yield, concentrating flavors and supporting wines of natural acidity and fine tannin structure.

The estate spans about 40 hectares of planted vines, cultivated at 2,100 vines per acre, a notably high density by New World standards. The exposure varies across south-facing slopes, terraced hillsides, and plateaus, creating a mosaic of microclimates that allow Stephan Asseo and his team to tailor variety to parcel. Warm days encourage phenolic ripeness and richness, while cool evenings, influenced by coastal breezes from the Pacific, preserve acidity and aromatic lift. Yields are tightly controlled—1.5 to 2 tons per acre—producing intensely concentrated, expressive fruit that defines the identity of each cuvée.

Wine Range of L’Aventure

L’Aventure’s portfolio is compact but deeply expressive, built exclusively on estate-grown fruit and defined by precision, power, and aging potential. Each wine reflects a meticulous blending process, often combining Rhône and Bordeaux varietals—an uncommon practice globally, and a defining hallmark of the estate.

The Estate Cuvée is the flagship wine, typically composed of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, and represents the fullest expression of the property’s terroir. It is aged in a high percentage of new French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Another cornerstone of the estate is Optimus, the estate’s more accessible wine but made with the same care—usually Syrah-heavy with Cabernet and Petit Verdot, it showcases approachability without sacrificing depth.

Cuvée Chloé, named after Stephan’s daughter, is a co-fermented blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Viognier, aged partly in amphora, and praised for its aromatic precision and texture.

For Her, a tribute to Stephan’s wife Béatrice, blends Syrah, Graciano, and Viognier, co-fermented and amphora-aged, offering elegance and floral lift.

Lastly, Côte à Côte is a Grenache-dominant cuvée in the tradition of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre, showcasing red fruit, savory spice, and Paso’s Mediterranean soul.

Each wine is designed to reflect its parcel of origin, its vintage character, and a vision of balance between power and finesse. Aging potential is significant across the range, with top wines evolving gracefully over two decades or more.

The name “L’Aventure” means “The Adventure” in French—a tribute to Stephan Asseo’s personal journey from Bordeaux to Paso Robles in pursuit of winemaking freedom. Today, his daughter Chloé Asseo plays a leading role in the winery’s operations, continuing the family’s legacy with a new generation of vision and dedication.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 99 Points (2017)
The 2017 For Her is a riper, sexier wine compared to the cool-climate style of the Chloe cuvée and offers a rocking bouquet of exotic, black and blue fruits, ground pepper, melted licorice, and candied orange peel.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 97 Points (2017)
Glass-staining violet. Displays expansive aromas of blackberry and boysenberry, with exotic spice, candied violet and incense notes building in the glass.

Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2017)
The 2017 For Her is a co-fermented blend of 54% Syrah, 32% Graciano and 14% Viognier. It has a medium to deep ruby color and is scented of blueberry jam, boysenberries, baked blackberries and pie spices with touches of mint leaves, blood orange, charcuterie, pepper, grapefruit peel and flowers. The medium to full-bodied, very silky palate spreads its wings to red, blue and black fruits with pretty floral and citrus accents, with powdery tannins and fantastic freshness to lift the long, layered finish. This is lovely!
