Region and Vineyards

The Hawkeye Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 comes from Kendall-Jackson’s estate vineyard perched between 900 and 2,400 feet elevation on the western slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains in Alexander Valley, Sonoma County. This mountain vineyard lies above the morning fog line, benefiting from a unique diurnal shift: cool mornings and warm afternoons, modulated by Pacific Ocean breezes. These conditions allow grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, intensifying flavor while preserving acidity.

The vineyard is planted on shallow, rocky volcanic soils with a distinctive brick-red loam, on steep, sometimes terraced hillsides. These challenging but rewarding conditions yield low-vigor vines with small, intensely concentrated berries. The site’s altitude and soil profile contribute to a Cabernet Sauvignon of remarkable density, structure, and mineral-driven complexity.

Winemaking

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine undergoes a carefully tailored vinification to preserve its mountain character. It is aged for 18 months in 98% French oak barrels, 70% of which are new, providing structure and aromatic layering without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.

This limited-production wine is part of Kendall-Jackson’s Estates Collection, a series focused on showcasing the most distinctive vineyard properties within their portfolio. Crafted for refined palates, this bottling exemplifies site expression, precise extraction, and harmonious oak integration.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep, inky garnet with purple hues.
  • Aroma: Rich notes of black cherry, cassis, and red currant interwoven with mineral tones and subtle oak spice.
  • Palate: Concentrated and well-extracted with muscular elegance; dark fruit core framed by fine-grained tannins and a long, mineral-laced finish. The wine is powerful yet balanced, offering intensity and freshness in equal measure.

Did you know?

Hawkeye Mountain is one of the highest-elevation vineyard sites in Alexander Valley. The fog struggles to reach the upper blocks, creating sharp temperature contrasts that are ideal for developing the thick skins and phenolic richness that define great mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Grilled ribeye steak with rosemary butter: The wine’s structure and dark fruit intensity pair seamlessly with the bold flavors of grilled beef.
  • Braised short ribs with red wine reduction: Echoes the wine’s depth and brings out its savory, mineral dimension.
  • Roasted wild mushrooms with garlic and herbs: A perfect match for the wine’s earthy tones and fine tannic grip.
  • Aged cheddar or Comté: Strong enough to meet the wine’s power while enhancing its complexity.

History of Kendall-Jackson

The estate was founded by Jess Jackson, a visionary who believed that great wines should be both accessible and expressive of place. His first vintage—1982 Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay—was fermented off-dry due to an unintended halt in fermentation, but the result delighted consumers and critics alike. It quickly rose to prominence and set the standard for creamy, oak-influenced California Chardonnay.

Over the decades, Jackson transformed his company into a vertically integrated enterprise. Rather than relying on contracted fruit, he began acquiring vineyards in cool-climate, coastal appellations, giving the winemaking team full control over the grape-growing process. After his passing, his wife Barbara Banke, an accomplished attorney and businesswoman, assumed leadership and expanded Kendall-Jackson’s global reputation. Today, it is the cornerstone of the Jackson Family Wines portfolio, which includes dozens of estates across California and the world.

The winemaking is overseen by Randy Ullom, who has served as Winemaster since 1993, alongside a respected team including Susan Lueker, Mark Theis, and Fritz Meier. Their philosophy blends traditional artisan techniques with scientific precision, ensuring both consistency and vintage expression.

Region and Vineyards

Kendall-Jackson owns and farms over 5,000 hectares of estate vineyards, all of which are certified sustainable under both the Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing (CCSW) and Sustainability in Practice (SIP) programs. These vineyards are located in Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, Lake, Monterey, and Santa Barbara Counties—some of the most climatically diverse and viticulturally prized regions in California.

The vineyards range from coastal benches and foggy valleys to high-elevation ridges and volcanic hillsides, enabling a nuanced expression of each varietal. In Santa Maria Valley, the Camelot Highlands site produces richly textured Chardonnay from 40-year-old own-rooted vines grown in marine sedimentary soils. In Alexander Valley, Hawkeye Mountain sits between 900 and 2,400 feet in elevation, producing a muscular yet elegant Cabernet Sauvignon from shallow, iron-rich volcanic soils. Anderson Valley provides Pinot Noir with crystalline acidity and minerality, particularly from ridgeline vineyards like Outland Ridge.

The diversity of these sites allows Kendall-Jackson to tailor specific grape varieties to optimal terroirs, and to blend across vineyard blocks to achieve stylistic balance in their core ranges while highlighting single-site purity in their premium bottlings.

Wine Range of Kendall-Jackson

The Kendall-Jackson portfolio is structured in clearly defined tiers:

  • Vintner’s Reserve: The flagship range and cornerstone of the brand. These wines - including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Rosé, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandelare blended from multiple coastal vineyards to showcase varietal character, freshness, and balance. The Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay alone has been the top-selling Chardonnay in America for over 25 years.
  • Jackson Estate: These wines highlight individual vineyard sites or specific appellations, expressing the nuanced identity of terroir. They include bottlings such as Camelot Highlands Chardonnay, Hawkeye Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, and Outland Ridge Pinot Noir.
  • Grand Reserve: These wines blend estate fruit from selected sites with greater oak integration and structural depth, offering more concentration and ageability than the Vintner’s Reserve series: Grand Reserve Cabernet SauvignonGrand Reserve Chardonnay.
  • Stature: The pinnacle of Kendall-Jackson’s portfolio, crafted from the estate’s best parcels with meticulous attention to detail. Wines like Stature Red Blend and Stature Chardonnay are aged in 50% new French oak, built for cellaring and prestige.

All Kendall-Jackson wines are made with small-lot vinification practices, including cold-soaking for reds, sur lie aging with bâtonnage for whites, and individual lot barrel fermentation. The estate conducts the world’s largest barrel fermentation program for Chardonnay, using French oak from its own stave mill in France and custom-coopered barrels in the U.S.

Did you know?

Kendall-Jackson was a pioneer in sustainable viticulture long before it became mainstream. The family’s commitment extends to bee habitats, water conservation, solar power, and biodiversity corridors across their estates. Their focus on soil health and regenerative farming is now influencing sustainability programs throughout California wine country.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 94 Points (2021)
The darkest and inkiest of the lineup, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Jackson Estate Hawkeye Mountain offers a forward calling card of graphite, black plum, and wild herbs. Fleshy and full-bodied, it has ample structure, with a fresh spine of acidity and is toasty with sweet oak spice of cedar and vanilla. It’s going to need time but should prove to be a powerful, age-worthy wine with 10 or more years ahead of it. Range: 92-94

Robert Parker (RP) : 91 Points (2019)

The full-bodied palate offers generous, nuanced fruit framed by grainy tannins, and it has a long, graphite-laced finish. 1,364 cases produced.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2016)
This is a tremendously impressive wine from the producer's high-elevation estate situated at 2,400 feet. Rich tones of vanilla bean, cassis and raspberry liqueur open the door to a soft, integrated midpalate that is complex and lengthy. (VB)

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 93 Points (2016)
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Hawkeye Mountain is deep, inky and powerful. Super-ripe dark cherry, pomegranate, mocha, blood orange and menthol infuse this succulent, racy Cabernet from vineyards in Anderson Valley. The Hawkeye boasts striking depth, texture and resonance. (AG)
