Region and Vineyards

Sonoma County, one of California's most prestigious wine regions, provides the foundation for this wine's character. Stretching from Pacific-influenced coastal ridges to inland valleys, the county offers a remarkable diversity of mesoclimates and soils. The cool coastal influence tempers ripening, ensuring Cabernet Sauvignon develops concentrated flavors with freshness and balance, while hillside and benchland sites add depth, structure, and mineral nuance.

The Grand Reserve Cabernet is drawn from Kendall-Jackson's best estate vineyards across Sonoma's ridges and mountain slopes. These elevated sites, with their rocky, well-drained soils, yield smaller berries of great intensity. Benchland plantings contribute supple fruit and polished tannins, while the maritime breezes preserve acidity and aromatic lift. This interplay of vineyard sources produces a wine that is simultaneously bold, structured, and refined, a hallmark of the Grand Reserve tier.

Winemaking

This Grand Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is the product of Kendall-Jackson's boutique-inspired approach, where each vineyard lot is vinified separately before blending. The 2022 vintage is composed of 100% estate fruit, carefully monitored from vine to barrel to preserve purity of expression.

The wine was aged for 20 months in oak, with 83% in French barrels (20% new) and 17% in American oak (3% new). This mix of cooperage layers in notes of mocha, vanilla, and subtle toast while respecting the varietal fruit. By sourcing roughly 70% of the blend from the same vineyard blocks annually, the winemaking team achieves remarkable stylistic consistency, while the remaining portion provides vintage character and complexity. The result is a Cabernet that embodies both structure and approachability, crafted to age gracefully.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep ruby with garnet reflections, dense at the core and vibrant at the rim.
  • Aroma: Expressive layers of blackberry, blueberry, and both red and black currants, accented by mocha, nutmeg, and a delicate frame of vanilla and toasted oak. Subtle chocolate tones add richness.
  • Palate: Full-bodied yet refined, with concentrated dark fruit framed by fine-grained tannins. Mocha, spice, and cocoa nuances unfold across a long, structured finish, marked by a mineral edge and lingering complexity.

Did you know?

Kendall-Jackson pioneered its Grand Reserve tier in the early 1990s as a way to highlight the best vineyard parcels from its vast estate holdings. Unlike many California producers that rely heavily on purchased fruit, Kendall-Jackson emphasizes 100% estate sourcing, ensuring tighter control over quality and stylistic precision. This approach allows them to craft wines of remarkable consistency across vintages, while still reflecting the uniqueness of Sonoma's terroirs.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Grilled ribeye steak: The wine's tannic backbone and dark fruit richness stand up beautifully to the marbled intensity of ribeye.
  • Braised short ribs: The slow-cooked meat's succulence harmonizes with the wine's mocha, spice, and savory undertones.
  • Mushroom risotto: Earthy porcini and creamy textures highlight the wine's mineral edge and velvety tannins.
  • Aged cheddar or gouda: The bold fruit and oak complexity pair seamlessly with nutty, sharp cheeses.

History of Kendall-Jackson

The estate was founded by Jess Jackson, a visionary who believed that great wines should be both accessible and expressive of place. His first vintage—1982 Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay—was fermented off-dry due to an unintended halt in fermentation, but the result delighted consumers and critics alike. It quickly rose to prominence and set the standard for creamy, oak-influenced California Chardonnay.

Over the decades, Jackson transformed his company into a vertically integrated enterprise. Rather than relying on contracted fruit, he began acquiring vineyards in cool-climate, coastal appellations, giving the winemaking team full control over the grape-growing process. After his passing, his wife Barbara Banke, an accomplished attorney and businesswoman, assumed leadership and expanded Kendall-Jackson’s global reputation. Today, it is the cornerstone of the Jackson Family Wines portfolio, which includes dozens of estates across California and the world.

The winemaking is overseen by Randy Ullom, who has served as Winemaster since 1993, alongside a respected team including Susan Lueker, Mark Theis, and Fritz Meier. Their philosophy blends traditional artisan techniques with scientific precision, ensuring both consistency and vintage expression.

Region and Vineyards

Kendall-Jackson owns and farms over 5,000 hectares of estate vineyards, all of which are certified sustainable under both the Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing (CCSW) and Sustainability in Practice (SIP) programs. These vineyards are located in Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, Lake, Monterey, and Santa Barbara Counties—some of the most climatically diverse and viticulturally prized regions in California.

The vineyards range from coastal benches and foggy valleys to high-elevation ridges and volcanic hillsides, enabling a nuanced expression of each varietal. In Santa Maria Valley, the Camelot Highlands site produces richly textured Chardonnay from 40-year-old own-rooted vines grown in marine sedimentary soils. In Alexander Valley, Hawkeye Mountain sits between 900 and 2,400 feet in elevation, producing a muscular yet elegant Cabernet Sauvignon from shallow, iron-rich volcanic soils. Anderson Valley provides Pinot Noir with crystalline acidity and minerality, particularly from ridgeline vineyards like Outland Ridge.

The diversity of these sites allows Kendall-Jackson to tailor specific grape varieties to optimal terroirs, and to blend across vineyard blocks to achieve stylistic balance in their core ranges while highlighting single-site purity in their premium bottlings.

Wine Range of Kendall-Jackson

The Kendall-Jackson portfolio is structured in clearly defined tiers:

  • Vintner’s Reserve: The flagship range and cornerstone of the brand. These wines - including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Rosé, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandelare blended from multiple coastal vineyards to showcase varietal character, freshness, and balance. The Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay alone has been the top-selling Chardonnay in America for over 25 years.
  • Jackson Estate: These wines highlight individual vineyard sites or specific appellations, expressing the nuanced identity of terroir. They include bottlings such as Camelot Highlands Chardonnay, Hawkeye Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, and Outland Ridge Pinot Noir.
  • Grand Reserve: These wines blend estate fruit from selected sites with greater oak integration and structural depth, offering more concentration and ageability than the Vintner’s Reserve series: Grand Reserve Cabernet SauvignonGrand Reserve Chardonnay.
  • Stature: The pinnacle of Kendall-Jackson’s portfolio, crafted from the estate’s best parcels with meticulous attention to detail. Wines like Stature Red Blend and Stature Chardonnay are aged in 50% new French oak, built for cellaring and prestige.

All Kendall-Jackson wines are made with small-lot vinification practices, including cold-soaking for reds, sur lie aging with bâtonnage for whites, and individual lot barrel fermentation. The estate conducts the world’s largest barrel fermentation program for Chardonnay, using French oak from its own stave mill in France and custom-coopered barrels in the U.S.

Did you know?

Kendall-Jackson was a pioneer in sustainable viticulture long before it became mainstream. The family’s commitment extends to bee habitats, water conservation, solar power, and biodiversity corridors across their estates. Their focus on soil health and regenerative farming is now influencing sustainability programs throughout California wine country.

Decanter (DCT) : 93 Points (2021)
Rich with lots of dark fruits and chocolate here, and grainy tannins. There's also a chalkiness to this wine, perhaps due to the good tannic structure, that gives it dimension and ageability. (JG)

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2019)
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Reserve is blended with 7% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot and was matured for 15 months in 30% new French oak. It has a deep ruby-purple color and pretty accents of cinnamon, violet, leather, dried herbs and bitter chocolate complementing cassis fruit. The full-bodied palate is concentrated yet fresh, with finely grained tannins, pure flavors and a very long finish.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 91 Points (2019)
This grows at high-eleva-tion estate vineyards, predominantly from the mountains above Alexander Valley (91 percent) with a contribution from Knights Valley. That tight, mountain-grown struc-ture is apparent in the iron-filing austerity of the tannins and the restraint they place on the wine’s dark floral fruit. You could play off the capsicum spice in those youthful tan-nins and decant this for a slow-braised pork shoulder. Or you could cellar it for five years or more.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 90 Points (2019)
Classic aromas of cedar and spice emerge from the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Reserve, followed by notes of black cherry fruit and graphite. The palate is full-bodied and fruit-forward, with blackcurrant, fresh soil, and cocoa powder. Ripe tannins emerging from the fruit, and the wine has a fairly long finish.
