Region and Vineyards

Felton Road is located in the Bannockburn subregion of Central Otago, New Zealand’s premier region for cool-climate Pinot Noir. Bannockburn benefits from a continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters, and a significant diurnal temperature variation during the growing season. This climate fosters slow ripening, allowing grapes to develop balanced acidity and concentrated flavors.

The Block 5 vineyard is situated on a gentle north-facing slope in Felton Road’s Elms Vineyard, first planted in 1993. The vineyard’s soils are varied, comprising a mix of loess, silt, clay lakebed deposits, and schist gravels. These free-draining soils, combined with careful vineyard management, including hand-harvesting, canopy management, and the use of cover crops, contribute to the intense flavors and fine structure of the wine. Felton Road’s commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture (certified by BioGro and Demeter) ensures that the wine reflects the purest expression of its unique terroir.

Winemaking

This vintage of Felton Road Block 5 Pinot Noir was marked by a growing season that included rainfall during cell division, which led to larger berries and a successful harvest. The winery employs minimal intervention winemaking, allowing the terroir to shine through.

The vinification process involved retaining 20% of the fruit as whole clusters, with the rest de-stemmed directly to the fermenters via gravity. A 9-day cold soak preceded fermentation with indigenous yeasts, and the wine was punched down by hand up to twice daily. The total maceration time on skins lasted 23 days, followed by pressing and transfer to French oak barrels (30% new), where the wine aged for 16 months. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration to preserve its natural complexity and purity.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: A vibrant ruby red with a clear, youthful sheen.
  • Aroma: Aromas of black cherry, dark florals, and a hint of spicy leather emerge from the glass, promising further complexity as the wine evolves in the bottle.
  • Palate: On the palate, the wine is elegant and refined, with layers of ripe black fruit, subtle earthiness, and finely integrated tannins. The detail and depth of the wine are palpable, with a long, sustained finish that is both delicate and powerful. This vintage is marked by its finesse and balance, avoiding any heaviness while delivering depth of flavor.

Did you know?

The Block 5 vineyard is known for producing wines with remarkable complexity, largely due to the diverse soil types within the vineyard. This variation in soil contributes to the wine’s multi-layered profile, with different sections of the vineyard imparting unique characteristics to the final blend.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Duck confit: The rich, savory flavors of duck are beautifully balanced by the wine’s vibrant acidity and subtle fruit notes.
  • Wild mushroom risotto: The earthy flavors of mushrooms complement the wine’s silky tannins and nuanced complexity.
  • Roast lamb with rosemary: The wine’s depth and finesse harmonize with the robust, herb-infused flavors of lamb.
  • Soft, creamy cheeses: The wine’s fine tannins and balanced acidity provide a perfect counterpoint to the rich texture of cheeses like Brie or Camembert.

History of Felton Road Estate

Felton Road was established in 1991, with the first vines planted by Stewart Elms, a local viticulture pioneer. The estate was founded on the belief that the unique soils and climate of Central Otago were perfectly suited for producing wines of distinction, particularly Pinot Noir. In 2000, the estate was purchased by Nigel Greening, a passionate wine lover from England, who has been instrumental in shaping Felton Road’s vision and commitment to sustainability.

From the outset, Felton Road’s winemaking philosophy has been based on minimal intervention and respect for the land. Blair Walter, the estate’s winemaker since 1996, has played a crucial role in the estate’s rise to prominence. Walter’s approach emphasizes purity of fruit, and under his leadership, Felton Road has become known for its wines that express the authenticity and complexity of the vineyards.

A significant milestone in the estate’s history came in 2002, when Felton Road fully converted to biodynamic farming, becoming certified by BioGro and Demeter. This shift to biodynamic practices has allowed the estate to improve soil health and vine vitality, resulting in wines that more accurately reflect their terroir.

Region and Vineyards

Felton Road is located in Central Otago, the southernmost wine region in the world, known for its cool climate and ability to produce exceptional Pinot Noir. The estate is specifically in the Bannockburn sub-region, which is characterized by a continental climate—warm summers, cold winters, and significant diurnal temperature variations. These conditions help retain the natural acidity of the grapes while allowing them to ripen fully, resulting in wines that are both vibrant and complex.

Felton Road farms four estate vineyards, covering 34 hectares in total. Each vineyard is meticulously managed to allow the unique characteristics of the site to shine through in the wines:

  • The Elms Vineyard: This is the home of Felton Road and contains the iconic Block 3 and Block 5 sites. Situated on gentle north-facing slopes, The Elms Vineyard has deep silt soils with calcareous seams, contributing to the distinctive minerality and structure found in these wines. Block 3 wines are known for their elegance, while Block 5 produces more powerful, structured wines.

  • Cornish Point Vineyard: Located close to a body of water, this vineyard benefits from a unique mesoclimate, which moderates temperature extremes. The result is a vineyard that produces fruit with intense concentration and ripe tannins, which are evident in Felton Road’s Cornish Point Pinot Noir.

  • Calvert Vineyard: Known for producing wines with fine tannins and floral characteristics, the Calvert Vineyard has deep, fertile silt soils and is located just 1 km from The Elms. The vineyard is also part of a collaboration between Felton Road, Carrick, and Pisa Range Estate, with each producer crafting a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from Calvert’s fruit.

  • MacMuir Vineyard: The newest addition to Felton Road’s portfolio, this vineyard brings additional complexity and diversity to the estate’s wines.

Biodynamic Viticulture

Felton Road’s commitment to biodynamic farming has been fundamental to its success. Certified by BioGro and Demeter, the estate avoids synthetic chemicals and instead uses natural preparations to enhance vine health and promote biodiversity. Techniques such as cover cropping and composting are used to maintain soil fertility, while all vineyard tasks, including hand-harvesting, shoot thinning, and leaf plucking, are performed with meticulous care to ensure the highest quality fruit.

Terroir and Soils

The diversity of soil types across the vineyards plays a critical role in defining the style of Felton Road’s wines. The silt and loess soils of The Elms and Calvert vineyards provide excellent drainage and impart a distinctive mineral character to the wines. In contrast, the schist and gravel soils of Cornish Point contribute to the boldness and concentration of the fruit. This combination of soil diversity and ideal growing conditions allows Felton Road to produce wines that are both expressive and age-worthy.

Wine Range

Felton Road produces a focused range of wines, specializing in Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. All the wines are estate-grown, and the winemaking process emphasizes minimal intervention to let the vineyard’s unique characteristics shine through.

  • Pinot Noir: Felton Road’s Pinot Noir wines are among the most acclaimed in New Zealand. The estate produces several single-vineyard expressions, including the highly sought-after Block 3, Block 5, Calvert, and Cornish Point Pinot Noirs. These wines are known for their balance of power and finesse, as well as their ability to age gracefully.

  • Chardonnay: Felton Road’s Chardonnay is also highly regarded, particularly the Block 2 Chardonnay, which showcases the minerality and purity of fruit that the estate’s cool-climate vineyards can achieve.

  • Riesling: The estate produces both dry and sweet Rieslings, which are known for their precision and vibrant acidity. These wines have garnered a reputation for their ability to express the purity of Central Otago’s cool-climate terroir.

Decanter (DCT) : 97 Points (2021)
Crushed berry, Ceylon tea leaves and white pepper make for a brooding and alluring nose. The palate takes up this aromatic theme, enabled by a very fine, clear streak of bright acidity. A frame of graceful, firm tannin lends structure to this elegant wine. Really poised, long and aromatic. Matured in just 25% of new French oak for 16 months.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 97 Points (2021)
The 2021 Pinot Noir Block 5 oozes class with its coating of rich fruit that sways its way across the palate. It's not a robust style, but there's masses of fine Pinot tannins that quietly melt around your cheeks. It's rather easy to like in youth, which is surprising. It doesn't even seem to need to take a breath and relax. And yet, it's all here for the long term with its great length, quiet structure and complex fragrances that fill the mouth. (1/2023)

James Suckling (JS) : 97 Points (2021)
The brightness and clarity of fruit is something else with hibiscus, ripe strawberries, raspberries, and slate follow through to a full body, with a tight and structured intensity at the finish. Solid tannins give it a tightness at the end. Needs four or five years to open.

Robert Parker (RP) : 94+ Points (2021)
The 2021 Block 5 Pinot Noir is full throttle and energetic, but it speaks also in a restrained, measured way. The wine shows a cavalcade of red fruits on the capacious mid-palate, and it spools through the long finish. Like casting a fishing rod into a still lake, the wine has an audible “ffff-ssssssss” through the finish. There remains an overhang of flavor on the mid-palate that conveys sweet roasted meats and exotic spices. The acidity here, as in all of the 2021s, feels alive and cooling. It is a wonderful thing. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2021)
Packs a bunch of power and precision on a delicate frame, with notes of fresh rose petals, lavender and cinnamon mingling with cherry compote, raspberry and cranberry. Reveals additional details of sandalwood, Earl Grey tea and forest floor that linger effortlessly on the finish.
