Wafts of elegant perfumed florals dominate the nose in the usual Calvert manner, but with a stronger emphasis in this very precise and attractively scented vintage. Hints of crushed spice and red fruits give way again to a cascade of florals on the palate. Ethereal, sophisticated and majestic.

The finish is tightly focussed with its characteristic fine grained and seamless tannins. Silky and long.

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2019)
A very vibrant and ripe Calvert with attractively spicy oak integration, as well as abundant red and dark cherries. Super fragrant. The palate is so silky and plush, packed with concentrated, fresh red-cherry flavor. Blueberry finish. Drink or hold.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 93 Points (2019)
This is a spicy, polished, aromatic bottling from one of New Zealand’s most renowned brands. It wafts cedar, dried flowers, white pepper and gentle red berry notes with a stony, mineral underbelly. The mouthfeel is silky, with juicy fruit and heaps of spice. Tannins are more prominent than others in the FR stable, but are well structured, suggesting a happy life in the cellar for this still-youthful Pinot until 2031, at least.

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 95 Points (2018)
Heavy silt soils with a thin layer of loess topsoil have produced a wine of surprising delicacy and grace but with impressive underlying power. Violet, red rose, cherry, plum and savoury characters with just a hint of spicy oak and cocoa powder. An accessible pinot noir with a sinewy core that suggests cellaring potential. (10/2019)

Wine Spectator (WS) : 93 Points (2018)
Distinctive, firm and focused, with a note of minerality weaving around the dried berry and cherry flavors at the core. Touches of spice, black tea and dark chocolate linger. Drink now through 2034. (MW) (4/2020)

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2018)
The 2018 Calvert Pinot Noir displays intertwined briary notes of red raspberries and resinous herbs. It's medium-bodied, with supple, slightly dusty tannins, but there's also a wiry backbone of acidity that further brightens the wine and imparts terrific length on the mocha-tinged finish.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17.5 Points (2018)
Organic and biodynamic. Mid cherry red. Ripe almost smoky red-cherry fruit. A slightly firmer grip to the tannins compared with the Bannockburn. Dry finesse and freshness and a really savoury darkly mineral aftertaste. Much too young but already in perfect harmony for a long future. 17.5/20 points. Drink 2023-2030. (JH) (10/2019)

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 94 Points (2017)
This is definitive Central Otago pinot in the tannic precision of its cold-climate savory spice notes. Blair Walter grows it under biodynamics (Demeter certified) at the Calvert Vineyard, a 25-acre site on Felton Road that the winery began leasing when it was planted in 2001; they purchased just under half of it in 2013. The Bannockburn soils of silty loam mix here with lake-bed clay, quartz sand and fine schist gravel on a sunny, north-facing slope that ripens fruit earlier than the Elms Vineyard, which surrounds the winery. That cool Otago sun comes across in briary berry flavors, herbal notes and apple-skin crunch. It needs a few years to integrate the toasted oak, but the wine’s fragrance lasts, bright and brisk.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2016)
The 2016 Calvert Pinot Noir has a little more definition on the nose than the 2016, featuring a mixture of red and black fruit tinged with black truffle and smoke. The palate is medium-bodied with red berry fruit, tomato vine, a touch of white pepper and an elegant finish that perhaps just misses the harmony and persistence of the previous vintage. Nevertheless, this is still very pretty and succinct Pinot Noir that should age well in bottle if so desired. (NM) (11/2018)
