Auslese [OWS-lay-zuh] means “selected from the harvest,” and is a sweet wine made from very ripe clusters that are about 50 percent affected by botrytis (in the red bucket, above).

The resulting wine is dense, intensely flavored and rich on the palate, but balanced by Riesling’s naturally brisk acidity. The red volcanic soil of the Ürziger Würzgarten vineyard produces wines with precocious tropical fruits, a rich texture and a pleasingly persistent finish.

A really beautiful, concentrated Auslese that combines a lot of citrus character with complex, spicy notes. The long finish is super fresh and very mineral. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese is clear and bright on the still-closed nose yet less complex compared to the Sonnenuhr (probably due to the recent bottling). The wine is clear and fresh, shows caramelized apple flavors, finely classy acidity and a crystalline, elegant finish yet seems to be somehow reduced in its expression. Rating: 93+

While the nose suggests spicy earth tones, crushed stone and saffron, lavishly sun-kissed guava, pink grapefruit and peach abound on the palate. Honeyed and silken, it clings on the palate but finishes with a vibrating, steely tang. Lovely already but it will improve for decades.

Mineral-driven, with a lively profile, featuring notes of nectarine, lemon oil, candied orange peel and sweet spice. The acidity is very prominent and cuts the sweetness significantly, leaving a mouthwatering impression on the long finish. Best from 2021 through 2036.
