The extraordinary Morstein vineyard is situated on a south-facing slope that ascends from the glacial valley of the Rhine to the rim of a high plateau, reaching a height of 280 meters (920 ft.) above sea level at an inclination of 20 percent.

The vines for the estate’s Morstein Riesling lie in a choice, five-hectare (12.3-acre) parcel of the site, consistently producing a magnificent wine of astonishing power, complexity and grace.

Grosses Gewächs (GG) is the German term for an estate’s best dry wine from a Grosse Lage vineyard.

Robert Parker (RP) : 96 Points (2019)
The 2019 Morstein Riesling GG is open and chalky on the intense, deep, elegant and refined lemon-scented nose. Lush and precise on the palate, this is a refined, enormously energetic and silky-textured dry Riesling with very fine tannins, great tension, finesse and stimulating salinity. Morstein fans shouldn't miss the 2019! Tasted as a sample in April 2020.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2018)
Starts off linear, but expands. A suave texture coats the palate, revealing notes of passion fruit, apricot and blossom, with a lemongrass hint in the background. Spice and savory mineral elements add to the complexity, but the pronounced acidity cuts through, disrupting the charm for now. Should reward with time. Best from 2022 through 2035.

A marine combination of salinity and alkalinity greets the nose, along with penetrating scents of lemon and tomatillo, anticipating the surprising tart-edged, tangy brightness and the piquancy that emerge on a full, firm, concentratedly sappy palate. Char, chalk, mouthwatering salinity and pungent herbal inflections combine with cheek-grabbing phenolic intensity and tartness for a strikingly vibrant, gripping finish. Wittmann’s Morstein is notoriously the darling among wine critics inside Germany, and here is a vintage in which I’m inclined to go along (though not overboard) with the adulation it so regularly receives. Drinking window: 2020 - 2030
