Vineyards and Winemaking:

The picturesque Taylors Pass Vineyard is located on the northern bank of the Awatere River in southern Marlborough. The average vine age is between 12-17 years-old. Sheltered from prevailing cool easterly winds, each terrace of the vineyard has varying soil types, stony gravels are nearest the river, whereas the mid-terrace has silt over gravels and the highest terrace is a deeper silt over clay-papa base. This patchwork of soil types provides the vineyard with dramatically variable ripening patterns, therefore producing a "fruit salad" of pungent Sauvignon Blanc flavours to select from.

Introduction It is not easy to tell your Dad that you are quitting a career in carpentry to try your hand at making wine. But in 1961, at the age of 21, that's exactly what Sir George Fistonich did. He leased five acres of land from his father, planted one acre with grapes and started making wine under the name 'Villa Maria' which he chose because his friends thought it sounded European. Since those first cuttings took hold in the soil out in Mangere, near Auckland, Sir George has… Read more

Superb wine with notes of flint, herbs, peach, nectarine and honeysuckle. The flavours continue for quite a while on the palate. Really lovely, impressive and complex stuff, topped and tailed by lemony acidity.

Robert Parker (RP) : 91 Points (2019)
Hints of green tomato and bell pepper appear on the nose of the 2019 Single Vineyard Taylors Pass Sauvignon Blanc. Thankfully, those are backed by a solid core of stone fruit and grapefruit, providing a sense of balanced ripeness to this medium-bodied offering. There's a plush silkiness to the texture on the palate and a lingering, vibrant, citrusy finish.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2019)
The Taylors Pass Sauvignon brightly waves the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc flag. This vintage expresses heady aromas of lime blossom, grapefruit rind, gooseberry and grass, lifted by crunchy acidity and with just enough texture to balance it out. A reliable, easy-drinking drop to pair with a wide range of summer fare.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2018)
This is the top of Villa’s sauvignon offering. Attractive, fine lime and grapefruit fragrance here, as well as some lighter, almost perfumed notes and fresh, green-leafed herbs. The palate is wrapped in neatly with a nicely cut interplay of concentrated fruit in the nectarine and green-mango spectrum and assertive acidity. A refined style.

An enticing combination of pink grapefruit, burnt orange and white nectarine interwoven with aromas of smoked almonds, hazelnut, and freshly cut hay. The savoury notes carries through onto the rich, textural palate, evidence of this wine’s low-intervention winemaking. An intricate bone-dry style that is highly concentrated with a distinct flintiness, tight structure and crisp, citrus finish.
