Region and Vineyards

Located in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, the Tolpuddle Vineyard was planted in 1988 and is known for its exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The 2022 growing season was the coldest in over a decade, with cool conditions that persisted through flowering and ripening, resulting in lower yields and concentrated flavors. These cool temperatures contributed to the region’s hallmark natural acidity, which is reflected in Tolpuddle’s wines as a fresh and vibrant backbone.

The vineyard’s meticulous management practices are aimed at producing fruit with purity and intensity, emphasizing natural acidity and ripe tannins. The Tolpuddle Vineyard’s soils and climate combine to create an environment where Pinot Noir develops a rich flavor profile without sacrificing finesse or elegance, capturing the essence of Tasmanian cool-climate terroir.

Winemaking

Tolpuddle Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022 is crafted to enhance its natural complexity and structure. The hand-picked grapes are a combination of whole berries and whole bunches, which are fermented in open fermenters with gentle pump-overs and plunging to encourage balanced extraction. This method preserves the wine’s bright fruit character and introduces layers of texture.

The wine then matures in French oak barrels for ten months, with approximately one-third new oak. This careful oak treatment integrates seamlessly, adding subtle depth and structure without overwhelming the purity of the fruit. The result is a Pinot Noir that showcases the unique cool-climate characteristics of Tasmania while retaining a rich and complex profile.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep ruby.
  • Aroma: Ripe red cherry, smoked meat, and hints of olive, accompanied by cool-season spice.
  • Palate: Concentrated with intense fruit flavors, framed by fine but firm tannins. The palate reveals a layered structure with a long, savory finish, balanced by vibrant acidity and spice.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Duck confit with cherry reduction: The rich, savory character of the duck pairs beautifully with the wine’s red cherry and smoked meat notes.
  • Grilled lamb chops with rosemary: The firm tannins and spice in the Pinot complement the lamb’s texture and herbal flavors.
  • Wild mushroom risotto: The earthy tones of the mushrooms echo the wine’s complexity, enhancing its depth.
  • Aged Gouda: The Pinot’s acidity and tannins balance the cheese’s nutty, savory flavors, creating a refined pairing.

History of Tolpuddle Vineyard

Tolpuddle’s origins are rooted in both historical symbolism and viticultural foresight. The vineyard was established in 1988, during the early development of Tasmania’s modern wine industry. It takes its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs, a group of 19th-century English farm labourers who were transported to Tasmania as convicts after forming one of the first trade unions. This connection pays tribute to the spirit of resilience and integrity—a theme that subtly underscores the vineyard’s identity.

For over two decades, the site quietly produced fruit for other labels, gaining a solid reputation among those in the know. In 2011, Michael Hill Smith MW, Australia’s first Master of Wine, and Martin Shaw, co-founders of Shaw + Smith, visited the vineyard and were immediately struck by its superb orientation, soil composition, and climatic potential. They acquired the property the same year with the clear intention to bottle wines under the Tolpuddle label—a radical shift from bulk grape supply to estate-driven fine wine.

Their approach focused on restoring the vineyard to its full expressive potential: replanting blocks, improving canopy management, and implementing organic practices where feasible. From the first release under their stewardship in 2012, Tolpuddle’s wines have been celebrated for their clarity, precision, and site fidelity, drawing comparisons with the best of Burgundy and Central Otago.

Region and Vineyards

The Coal River Valley, situated just east of Hobart, is one of Tasmania’s most compelling wine regions. It benefits from a moderately cool, semi-maritime climate with low annual rainfall and high sunshine hours—an unusual combination that allows for consistent grape ripening with low disease pressure. These conditions enable a long hang time, fostering the slow accumulation of flavour while preserving natural acidity, a hallmark of wines from this region.

Tolpuddle's 20-hectare vineyard lies on north-east facing slopes, providing optimal exposure to morning sun while protecting the vines from excessive heat in the afternoons. The soils are composed of light silica over sandstone, which ensures excellent drainage and limits vigour—ideal conditions for producing grapes of intensity and concentration.

The vineyard is planted exclusively to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with clones selected for their suitability to the Tasmanian climate. Precision viticulture is key: vines are trellised and spur-pruned, yields are kept deliberately low, and attention to canopy management ensures even ripening across parcels. Importantly, no irrigation is used, allowing the deep-rooted vines to fully express the mineral nuances of the soil.

These factors combine to produce wines of striking purity and definition, with Chardonnay characterised by citrus zest, flint, and saline edge, and Pinot Noir showing lifted aromatics, red berries, and fine-grained tannins.

Wine Range of Tolpuddle Vineyard

Tolpuddle’s minimalist portfolio underscores a commitment to varietal and regional precision. The estate produces only:

  • Tolpuddle Chardonnay: Fermented and matured in French oak (approximately 30–35% new), this wine showcases linearity, crushed stone, and white florals, with vibrant acidity and subtle oak integration.
  • Tolpuddle Pinot Noir: A portion of whole-bunch fermentation adds structure and perfume to this finely etched red, marked by red cherry, dried herbs, and polished tannins. It is aged in French oak, around 30% new.

Each vintage sees minor stylistic adjustments in response to climatic variation, but the overarching philosophy remains consistent: to craft wines of purity, restraint, and age-worthiness, shaped by place rather than cellar technique.

Tolpuddle opened a dedicated tasting room in late 2024, offering curated wine flights and local artisan fare within the vineyard itself. It is one of the few top-tier Australian producers to provide a cellar-door experience of such intimacy and focus, reflecting the estate’s philosophy of transparency and authenticity.

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 98 Points (2022)
"Impressively deep, rich purple-red colour, unusual in Australian pinot noir. The bouquet is loaded with black cherry, blackberry and spice aromas, a hint of smoky oak adding charcuterie and fivespice nuances, while the palate is voluptuously full and rich, decadently flavoured, with luxurious flesh and fruit, abundant fine/soft tannins and terrific length. There are some whole-bunch nuances which are beautifully incorporated into the wide array of flavours. A totally convincing and thoroughly impressive Aussie pinot noir to compare with the best in the world. " (Huon Hooke, The Real Review) (11/2023)

James Halliday (JH) : 96 Points (2022)
Tolpuddle has firmly cemented its position at the pointy end of the Tasmanian pinot noir pyramid, consistently producing knockout wines that have become a benchmark for the region. Nothing changes with the 2022 release, which shows wonderful fruit intensity and oodles of pinosity in a graceful package. Lovely pure dark cherry and wild strawberry fruits, cut with exotic spice, charcuterie, roasting game, shiitake broth, amaro herbs, purple floral tones and complex forest floor notes. Textural and elegant yet with an undercurrent of latent power and intensity,a tight tannin frame and a long finish that shows balance and poise. Just wonderful stuff.

Decanter (DCT) : 96 Points (2022)
Planted in 1988, this cool, northeast-facing vineyard (benefiting from being in a rain shadow) was bought in a spur of the moment decision by cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW (of Shaw & Smith in the Adelaide Hills) in 2011. This is fermented and matured in oak barrels, about 30% new, using a proportion of whole bunch fruit. Anne Krebiehl MW: Darker fruit, peony petal, Ceylon tea. Translucent and peppery, crunchy, fine tannin: a beautifully marginal Pinot. Justin Knock MW: Beguiling nose, maritime notes, fragrant spices, cumin, red fruits, layers of flavour. Everything is here and in balance. Wonderful. Dirceu Vianna Junior MW: Generous, expressive, ripe red and dark fruits and a hint of leafiness and spice. Elegant and combines lots of ripe juicy fruit with savoury complexity.

Robert Parker (RP) : 94+ Points (2022)
The 2022 Pinot Noir leads with cherries and sumac on the nose and a lithe undercurrent of star anise, licorice, red apples and even a hint of watermelon. The whole-bunch component of this wine contributes graphite and arnica, blood orange, Campari, orange peel and dried fennel seeds. The wine is spicy and agile and feels lighter in fruit weight than the 2021 that came before it. It's still a superb wine, just different. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

James Suckling (JS) : 95 Points (2022)
Very good Tassie pinot. Root spice and earthy forestry notes of dried porcini dashi, autumnal leaves and loganberry, set in relief against a swathe of darker cherry. The spiky whole bunch inclusion is evident across the finish reeling off a whiff of dill and mezcal, yet it is largely buried by the extract and density. This should age very well, as the record at this address attests.
