Region and Vineyards

The Home Ranch Zinfandel is crafted from Seghesio’s historic Home Ranch Vineyard, located in the heart of Alexander Valley, Sonoma County. These original vines, planted in 1895, are among the oldest in the region, thriving in soils that encourage deep roots and concentrated fruit. This vineyard exemplifies the unique terroir of Alexander Valley, where a warm climate and excellent drainage promote optimal ripening conditions.

The 2021 vintage benefited from a moderate growing season with limited water supply, allowing grapes to ripen at a steady pace. Despite reduced yields due to early-season low moisture, the resulting grapes were intensely flavored, reflecting the richness and vibrancy of the vintage.

Winemaking

The grapes for the 2021 Home Ranch Zinfandel were hand-harvested and sorted before gentle destemming. Fermentation occurred in small open-top fermenters, with pneumatic punchdowns to ensure precise extraction during the 9–12 days of maceration. After fermentation, the free-run juice was transferred to barrels for malolactic fermentation.

The wine was aged for 15 months in a combination of 15% new French oak barrels and 85% neutral French and American oak barrels. It was racked twice before blending and once more prior to bottling, allowing for a balanced and polished final product.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep ruby with a purple hue.
  • Aroma: Sweet dried sage, blackberry pie, and dark chocolate cherry cordial.
  • Palate: A symphony of black cherry and graham cracker crust flavors, with juicy, velvety tannins. The rich and powerful finish balances the bold complexity of the wine.

The Home Ranch Zinfandel is built around vines planted by the Seghesio family in 1895, marking over 125 years of winemaking tradition. This historic vineyard reflects the legacy and enduring quality of Seghesio’s Zinfandel expertise.

History of Seghesio Family Vineyards

The history of Seghesio Family Vineyards began in 1895, when Edoardo Seghesio, an Italian immigrant from Piedmont, planted his first Zinfandel vines at the Home Ranch Vineyard in Alexander Valley. Edoardo’s ambition was to bring the robust winemaking traditions of Italy to California’s fertile soils. His efforts laid the foundation for the family’s legacy of producing high-quality wines, particularly Zinfandel.

During Prohibition, the family adapted by producing sacramental and table wines, preserving the vineyards through challenging times. In the mid-20th century, Edoardo’s son, Angelo Seghesio, expanded the winery's holdings and introduced innovative vineyard techniques. By the 1990s, Seghesio was recognized as one of Sonoma’s premier Zinfandel producers, with their old-vine vineyards producing wines of exceptional character and depth.

Today, under the stewardship of the fourth and fifth generations, the Seghesio family combines their heritage with sustainable practices, ensuring the vineyards continue to thrive. The winery’s inclusion in the Crimson Wine Group since 2011 has enabled continued growth while maintaining its family values and traditions.

Region and Vineyards

Seghesio’s vineyards span 300+ acres across Sonoma County, encompassing appellations such as Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Russian River Valley. These regions provide a range of microclimates and soils that allow for a diverse portfolio of wines, though Zinfandel remains the flagship.

The historic Home Ranch Vineyard in Alexander Valley is the heart of Seghesio’s identity. Planted in 1895, it features some of the oldest Zinfandel vines in California, still producing small, concentrated yields with remarkable intensity. The Montafi Vineyard in Russian River Valley, planted with 94-year-old Zinfandel vines, further demonstrates Seghesio’s commitment to preserving heritage sites.

The terroirs range from the gravelly loam soils of Dry Creek Valley, which provide excellent drainage, to volcanic and sandy soils in other regions, each contributing unique characteristics to the wines. The cool Pacific breezes temper the heat, resulting in wines that balance ripe fruit with refreshing acidity.

Sustainability is integral to Seghesio’s approach, with all vineyards Certified Sustainable. Practices include planting cover crops, eliminating synthetic herbicides like glyphosate, and fostering biodiversity through natural predator habitats.

Plump and richly structured, with blackberry cobbler, licorice and brown baking spice flavors that slowly take on structure and focus toward jammy tannins. Drink now through 2032.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 92 Points (2021)
An opaque ruby red, the 2021 Zinfandel Home Ranch has more depth, with licorice, black plum and purple flowers. Full-bodied, with blackberry, lavender, and baked earth, this is a highly attractive and juicy wine to drink over the next several years.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2019)
This wine includes fruit from the original Seghesio planting in 1895 five generations later, the family continues to base its business on zinfandel. Their 2019 is a muscular wine, a lasting mineral essence tied to the intensity and concentration of old-vine fruit. Its juiciness feels like it comes directly from the grape skins, broad and generous. The tannins are in sync and the wine shows integrity,” said James Conley of Keen’s Chop House in NYC. It’s youthfully tight, set to age for a decade or more.

Region and Vineyards

The Adelaida District of Paso Robles, where Tablas Creek is located, boasts a Mediterranean climate with limestone-rich soils, making it ideal for Rhône varieties. The estate vineyards are certified organic and biodynamic, underscoring the commitment to sustainable viticulture.

The region's diverse microclimate, with warm days and cool nights, allows the grapes to ripen fully while retaining natural acidity. The 2019 growing season began with ample winter rainfall, replenishing the soils and delaying bud break. A cool early summer led to gradual ripening, which concentrated flavors and preserved brightness, resulting in a vintage that balances intensity with freshness.

Winemaking

The 2019 Esprit de Tablas Blanc is a blend of 63% Roussanne, 20% Grenache Blanc, 14% Picpoul Blanc, and 3% Picardan. Each variety contributes unique characteristics:

  • Roussanne forms the backbone, offering richness, honeyed notes, and a mineral core.
  • Grenache Blanc adds lushness, green apple, and bright acidity.
  • Picpoul Blanc imparts pineapple brightness and saline minerality.
  • Picardan, though a smaller component, enhances elegance and finesse.

The grapes were fermented in a mix of oak barrels of various sizes and ages, emphasizing textural complexity without overwhelming oak influence. Post-blending, the wine was returned to foudres for ageing through the subsequent harvest, followed by nine months in bottle prior to release in December 2020. This approach ensures integration and depth.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Bright straw with golden hues, reflecting its richness and vibrancy.
  • Aroma: A creamy bouquet of wildflower honey, baking spices, and citrus pith, interwoven with briny mineral undertones.
  • Palate: The wine is textured and dry, showcasing flavors of quince, pear, and a custard-like richness. A long finish lingers with notes of honey, vanilla bean, and limestone minerality.

Did You Know?

The vines for this wine were propagated from budwood cuttings from Château de Beaucastel, Tablas Creek’s Rhône Valley partner. This lineage ensures authenticity in varietal expression and adherence to traditional Rhône winemaking.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Homard à l’Américaine (Lobster with tomato, brandy, and cream): The wine’s richness complements the dish’s indulgent flavors, while its acidity cuts through the creaminess.
  • Ratatouille Provençale: The herbaceous and roasted vegetable notes pair beautifully with the wine’s texture and minerality.
  • Filet de saumon rôti (Roasted salmon): The wine’s bright acidity balances the rich, oily texture of the fish.
  • Aïoli Provençal (Garlic and olive oil dip with vegetables): The wine’s citrusy freshness enhances the bold flavors of this classic Mediterranean dish.
