Region and Vineyards

Old Vine Zinfandel 2021 is sourced from exceptional vineyards across Sonoma County, including sites in the Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys. The vines used for this wine average 75 years old, qualifying under Seghesio’s definition of “Old Vine,” which specifies a minimum of 50 years. These mature vines yield lower quantities of fruit but offer exceptional intensity and complexity.

The 2021 growing season featured limited water supply due to irrigation restrictions, but moderate weather allowed grapes to ripen slowly, preserving acidity and enhancing flavor concentration. This vintage is noted for its vibrant character and balance, reflecting the resilience of the old vines and Seghesio’s commitment to sustainable viticulture.

Winemaking

The grapes for Old Vine Zinfandel 2021 were hand-harvested and meticulously sorted to ensure optimal ripeness. After light crushing, fermentation took place in small open-top stainless steel tanks with gentle pneumatic punchdowns to extract color and flavor while preserving freshness.

The wine was aged for 15 months in oak barrels, including 13% new French oak and 87% neutral French and American oak, allowing the wine’s rich fruit and savory complexity to integrate seamlessly. The blending process includes 87% Zinfandel, 10% Petite Sirah, 2% Carignane, and 1% Alicante Bouschet, adding depth and structure.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep garnet red.

  • Palate: Full-bodied and layered, featuring flavors of candied figs, baking spices, and chocolate. The mid-palate offers savory notes and silky tannins, leading to a velvety, long-lasting finish with robust structure.

History of Seghesio Family Vineyards

The history of Seghesio Family Vineyards began in 1895, when Edoardo Seghesio, an Italian immigrant from Piedmont, planted his first Zinfandel vines at the Home Ranch Vineyard in Alexander Valley. Edoardo’s ambition was to bring the robust winemaking traditions of Italy to California’s fertile soils. His efforts laid the foundation for the family’s legacy of producing high-quality wines, particularly Zinfandel.

During Prohibition, the family adapted by producing sacramental and table wines, preserving the vineyards through challenging times. In the mid-20th century, Edoardo’s son, Angelo Seghesio, expanded the winery's holdings and introduced innovative vineyard techniques. By the 1990s, Seghesio was recognized as one of Sonoma’s premier Zinfandel producers, with their old-vine vineyards producing wines of exceptional character and depth.

Today, under the stewardship of the fourth and fifth generations, the Seghesio family combines their heritage with sustainable practices, ensuring the vineyards continue to thrive. The winery’s inclusion in the Crimson Wine Group since 2011 has enabled continued growth while maintaining its family values and traditions.

Region and Vineyards

Seghesio’s vineyards span 300+ acres across Sonoma County, encompassing appellations such as Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Russian River Valley. These regions provide a range of microclimates and soils that allow for a diverse portfolio of wines, though Zinfandel remains the flagship.

The historic Home Ranch Vineyard in Alexander Valley is the heart of Seghesio’s identity. Planted in 1895, it features some of the oldest Zinfandel vines in California, still producing small, concentrated yields with remarkable intensity. The Montafi Vineyard in Russian River Valley, planted with 94-year-old Zinfandel vines, further demonstrates Seghesio’s commitment to preserving heritage sites.

The terroirs range from the gravelly loam soils of Dry Creek Valley, which provide excellent drainage, to volcanic and sandy soils in other regions, each contributing unique characteristics to the wines. The cool Pacific breezes temper the heat, resulting in wines that balance ripe fruit with refreshing acidity.

Sustainability is integral to Seghesio’s approach, with all vineyards Certified Sustainable. Practices include planting cover crops, eliminating synthetic herbicides like glyphosate, and fostering biodiversity through natural predator habitats.

The 2021 Zinfandel Old Vine offers up loads of scorched earth, cedar and plum, and on the palate, it reveals a bit of mixed berry fruit, with pressed red flowers and dusty earth. Juicy and inviting, with ripe tannins, this has a lot of immediate charm to drink over the next few years.

The 2016 Zinfandel Old Vine has an open nose of red berry preserves, warm blackberries and stone fruit hints with layers of cinnamon stick, sweet spices, charcuterie, garrigue, turned earth and dried violet. The palate is medium to full-bodied, intense and spicy with a firm frame and mouthwatering acidity, finishing long and layered. This merits another couple of years in bottle. 1,429 cases produced.
