Region and Vineyards

Guidalberto comes from Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, where Tenuta San Guido benefits from a distinctive Mediterranean setting shaped by the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. The estate describes a microclimate moderated by constant sea breezes, with hills offering protection from north-easterly winds and sunlight reflected back from the sea. This combination helps preserve freshness while allowing full ripening, one reason Bolgheri has become so successful with Bordeaux varieties. Decanter likewise characterises the wider Tuscan coast by mild winters, warm sunny summers and steady maritime airflow, conditions that suit structured yet aromatic reds.

For the 2023 vintage, the estate reports a season of replenishing autumn rain, a cold wet winter, variable spring weather and some summer heat spikes, followed by an August Atlantic influence that helped secure balanced ripening. Harvest began with Merlot on 4 September and ended with Cabernet Sauvignon on 5 October, including fruit from Castiglioncello and Quercione vineyards. The marked day-night temperature shifts during harvest were especially important in building aromatic precision and preserving the wine's vibrant, saline edge.

Winemaking

Guidalberto 2023 is made from 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, a blend that reflects Tenuta San Guido's long exploration of Bordeaux varieties in Bolgheri. On the estate's official page, Guidalberto is described as the result of more than two decades of experimentation, with Merlot included to bring aromatic richness and softness even with relatively short ageing. That philosophy is clearly visible in 2023, where Cabernet provides backbone and tension, while Merlot contributes suppleness and a more generous mid-palate. The finished wine reaches 13.56% alcohol, with a pH of 3.44 and total acidity of 6.12 g/l, suggesting both ripeness and structural freshness.

Ageing takes place in 225-litre barriques, principally French oak with a small 5% proportion of American oak. The élevage uses 40% new wood, 40% second-passage barrels and 20% third- and fourth-passage barrels, a measured oak regime that aims for polish rather than overt sweetness. The estate's own note stresses drinkability, but also points to long-term ageing potential, and the technical choices support that ambition: fine-grained tannin shaping, controlled oak framing and enough acidity to carry the wine well beyond its first flush of fruit.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep purple-red, dark at the core and vivid at the rim, suggesting both concentration and youthful energy.
  • Aroma: Lavender, blackcurrant, thyme and citrus hints from the estate note, joined by broader impressions of Mediterranean herbs, cassis, black cherry, damp earth, wild mint and a lightly balsamic nuance from professional reviewers.
  • Palate: Fresh and poised, with tangy blackberry and black plum fruit, lively acidity, a discreet saline thread and well-integrated, silky tannins. The finish is clean, savoury and refined, with enough density and subtle sweetness of fruit to suggest very good ageing capacity.

Did you know?

Guidalberto was first released with the 2000 vintage, and its name honours Guidalberto della Gherardesca, an ancestor credited with helping shape the agricultural landscape around Bolgheri in the early nineteenth century, including the famous Viale dei Cipressi. The label depicts the Oratory of San Guido, tying the wine directly to the estate's history and sense of place.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Tagliatelle al ragù: The wine's ripe black fruit and polished tannins sit beautifully with slow-cooked meat sauce, while its acidity keeps the pairing lively rather than heavy.
  • Grilled ribeye steak: Cabernet-led structure, herbal complexity and savoury depth make this a natural partner for charred beef and its rich marbling.
  • Rosemary roast lamb: The wine's thyme, lavender and wild-mint notes echo the herbs, while the Merlot component softens the texture against the lamb's succulence.
  • Porcini mushroom risotto: Earthy, woodland tones in the wine and its saline freshness create a refined, autumnal match with porcini's savoury depth.

History of Tenuta San Guido

The history of Tenuta San Guido is deeply rooted in the Italian aristocracy and in the winemaking traditions of Bolgheri. The estate was founded by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who, in the 1940s, had the visionary idea of planting Bordeaux varietals, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, in the Tuscan hills, a region historically known for Sangiovese.

Inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux, particularly Château Lafite, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta experimented with the idea of creating a wine that would combine the character of Tuscan terroir with the structure of Bordeaux blends. His decision to plant vineyards in stony, gravelly soils similar to those of Bordeaux led to the creation of Sassicaia, a wine that became the first Italian Super Tuscan to gain international recognition.

The first commercial vintage of Sassicaia was released in 1968, and it quickly gained acclaim, leading to the creation of the Bolgheri DOC in 1994, which was specifically designed for Sassicaia and other wines of the region. The estate remains in the hands of the Incisa della Rocchetta family, who continue to produce world-class wines under the leadership of Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta, Mario’s son.

Region and Vineyards

Tenuta San Guido is located in the heart of the Bolgheri DOC, an area on the Tuscan coast that benefits from its proximity to the sea. The vineyards are planted at various altitudes, from sea level up to 400 meters, offering a wide range of microclimates and soil types, from gravel and limestone to clay.

The unique climate of Bolgheri, with its mild winters and warm, dry summers, is tempered by the cooling influence of the Tyrrhenian Sea, which helps preserve the acidity and balance in the grapes. This maritime climate is ideal for Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, which thrive in these conditions, producing wines of great structure, finesse, and aging potential.

Tenuta San Guido’s vineyards are divided into three main areas:

  • Sassicaia: The estate's most iconic vineyard, producing the legendary Sassicaia wine from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes.
  • Guidalberto: A vineyard named after Guidalberto della Gherardesca, producing wines such as Guidalberto, a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • Le Difese: A vineyard focusing on a more accessible wine, Le Difese, made with a higher proportion of Sangiovese blended with Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Range

Tenuta San Guido produces three primary wines, each reflecting the estate’s philosophy of quality, innovation, and respect for tradition:

  • Sassicaia: The flagship wine, made predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc (15%). It is one of Italy’s most prestigious wines and has earned global acclaim for its elegance, structure, and aging potential.

  • Guidalberto: A blend of Merlot (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), offering a more approachable style compared to Sassicaia, but still maintaining the estate's hallmark complexity and balance.

  • Le Difese: A blend of Sangiovese (70%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (30%), it is designed to be an early-drinking wine with vibrant fruit and smooth tannins, offering an introduction to the estate’s style at a more accessible price point.

Did You Know?

Sassicaia was so influential that in 1994, it became the only Italian wine to have its own DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), the Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC, making it the first and only Italian wine region created for a single wine. This move recognized Sassicaia’s exceptional quality and its role in transforming the reputation of Italian wines globally.

Decanter (DCT) : 96 Points (2023)
Super-fresh with balsamic herb, blueberry and floral aromatics, Guidalberto 2023 has blossomed into a grand vin all of its own. Invigorating cool forest berry flavours mingle with touches of spice and fine, silky tannins. So poised. Wow!

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2023)
This vintage shows a remarkable aromatic profile of Mediterranean herbs, cassis, black cherries, leather and earth with a kind of gamey depth. Full-bodied, it shows velvety, slightly sandy tannins with a firm structure, refreshing integrated acidity and a savory cedar finish.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2023)
On the nose, the density of blackberries and damp earth is balanced by the clean snap of pencil eraser and wild mint. The palate brings tangy, tart blackberries, black plums and citrus, alongside more wild mint and fennel, while smooth tannins sit back and watch a hot, acidic river carry the finish.

The 2023 Guidalberto was tasted as a preview and was a preliminary blend of barrel samples prepared for this tasting by the winery team, led by Carlo Paoli. The second sample that was blended was pure and ripe, with detailed layers of youthful cherry liqueur, fresh herbs, and lavender perfume. The palate offers medium to full-bodied richness, with a supple and primary feel, though it starts to reveal its underlying refined structure. While this was an early preliminary look at what the wine could look like, I’m looking forward to next year’s tasting to see how it develops. Barrel Sample: 92-94

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2023)
The Tenuta San Guido 2023 Guidalberto comes from a challenging vintage, shaped by heat and rain that brought pressure from downy mildew, particularly affecting early-ripening Merlot. Big efforts were made during selection. Aromatically plump and expressive, the wine shows ripe cherry and blackberry preserves layered over a medium- to full-bodied mouthfeel, with primary fruit rounded by sweet notes of cinnamon. Despite the difficulties of the year, there is appealing freshness on the palate with hints of orange peel and blood orange that lift the fruit, giving the wine energy and balance.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2023)
Pure and juicy, revealing black cherry, blackberry, floral and Mediterranean herb notes, plus touches of spices. Light-bodied, elegant and deftly balanced, with a lingering, mouthwatering finish. This is approachable now but will benefit from another 612 months aging. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2032. 5,400 cases imported.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2023)
The 2023 Guidalberto is another terrific wine from Tenuta San Guido in this vintage. Aromatic, medium in body and gracious, the 2023 is pure charm. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, spice and blood orange all pulse through a vibrant, refreshing Guidalberto that will drink well on release. The more refined side of Bolgheri is very much on display. This is a fine effort in a year marked by heavy rains and elevated disease pressure. What a delight.
