Region and Vineyards

The Le Difese 2022 comes from the prestigious Toscana IGT appellation, within the Bolgheri region on the Tuscan coast. The vineyards are located on hillside sites close to the sea, benefiting from strong ventilation and a significant diurnal temperature range, which helps maintain the grapes' natural acidity and balance.

The 2022 vintage presented challenges due to warm weather and low rainfall, particularly during the flowering and fruit-setting stages, which reduced the overall yield. However, the proximity to the sea and strong winds provided cooling effects that helped preserve the grape quality, leading to a well-balanced harvest with good acidity and moderate alcohol levels.

Winemaking

The Le Difese 2022 is crafted with a focus on maintaining freshness and varietal purity. The grapes, a blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, were hand-harvested starting from September 4th for the Cabernet Sauvignon and September 16th for the Sangiovese.

Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with gentle extraction to preserve the delicate fruit flavors. The wine was then matured for 8 months in French oak barriques, previously used for Guidalberto, followed by a period of conservation in steel vats to ensure tartaric stability before bottling.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep, vibrant ruby red.
  • Aroma: Expressive and aromatic, with intense notes of fresh berries, cherries, and subtle hints of spice and herbs.
  • Palate: Smooth and elegant, with a beautiful balance of fresh red fruit flavors, well-integrated tannins, and a light touch of oak. The wine is approachable yet structured, with a soft mouthfeel and a refreshing finish.
  • Finish: Long and pleasant, with lingering notes of berry fruit and a gentle acidity that keeps the palate refreshed.

Did You Know?

The name Le Difese is inspired by the "teeth" of the wild boar, a creature emblematic of the Tuscan countryside. First produced in 2002, it is the youngest of Tenuta San Guido’s wines and shares the prestigious pedigree of Sassicaia, one of Italy’s most renowned wines.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Pasta with wild boar ragù: The savory richness of the boar complements the fruitiness of the Sangiovese and the structure of the Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • Grilled Tuscan sausages with rosemary: The herbal notes in the wine enhance the flavors of the sausages, while the acidity balances the richness of the dish.
  • Pizza Margherita: The fresh tomato and basil flavors pair wonderfully with the wine’s bright acidity and fruit-forward profile.
  • Aged Pecorino cheese: The nuttiness and slight saltiness of the cheese complement the wine’s smooth texture and delicate tannins.

History of Tenuta San Guido

The history of Tenuta San Guido is deeply rooted in the Italian aristocracy and in the winemaking traditions of Bolgheri. The estate was founded by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who, in the 1940s, had the visionary idea of planting Bordeaux varietals, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, in the Tuscan hills, a region historically known for Sangiovese.

Inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux, particularly Château Lafite, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta experimented with the idea of creating a wine that would combine the character of Tuscan terroir with the structure of Bordeaux blends. His decision to plant vineyards in stony, gravelly soils similar to those of Bordeaux led to the creation of Sassicaia, a wine that became the first Italian Super Tuscan to gain international recognition.

The first commercial vintage of Sassicaia was released in 1968, and it quickly gained acclaim, leading to the creation of the Bolgheri DOC in 1994, which was specifically designed for Sassicaia and other wines of the region. The estate remains in the hands of the Incisa della Rocchetta family, who continue to produce world-class wines under the leadership of Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta, Mario’s son.

Region and Vineyards

Tenuta San Guido is located in the heart of the Bolgheri DOC, an area on the Tuscan coast that benefits from its proximity to the sea. The vineyards are planted at various altitudes, from sea level up to 400 meters, offering a wide range of microclimates and soil types, from gravel and limestone to clay.

The unique climate of Bolgheri, with its mild winters and warm, dry summers, is tempered by the cooling influence of the Tyrrhenian Sea, which helps preserve the acidity and balance in the grapes. This maritime climate is ideal for Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, which thrive in these conditions, producing wines of great structure, finesse, and aging potential.

Tenuta San Guido’s vineyards are divided into three main areas:

  • Sassicaia: The estate's most iconic vineyard, producing the legendary Sassicaia wine from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes.
  • Guidalberto: A vineyard named after Guidalberto della Gherardesca, producing wines such as Guidalberto, a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • Le Difese: A vineyard focusing on a more accessible wine, Le Difese, made with a higher proportion of Sangiovese blended with Cabernet Sauvignon.

Wine Range

Tenuta San Guido produces three primary wines, each reflecting the estate’s philosophy of quality, innovation, and respect for tradition:

  • Sassicaia: The flagship wine, made predominantly from Cabernet Sauvignon (85%) with a small percentage of Cabernet Franc (15%). It is one of Italy’s most prestigious wines and has earned global acclaim for its elegance, structure, and aging potential.

  • Guidalberto: A blend of Merlot (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), offering a more approachable style compared to Sassicaia, but still maintaining the estate's hallmark complexity and balance.

  • Le Difese: A blend of Sangiovese (70%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (30%), it is designed to be an early-drinking wine with vibrant fruit and smooth tannins, offering an introduction to the estate’s style at a more accessible price point.

Did You Know?

Sassicaia was so influential that in 1994, it became the only Italian wine to have its own DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), the Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC, making it the first and only Italian wine region created for a single wine. This move recognized Sassicaia’s exceptional quality and its role in transforming the reputation of Italian wines globally.

Decanter (DCT) : 92 Points (2022)
Le Difese 2022 is a blend of 55% Sangiovese and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, the former brought in from long-standing partners based in Chianti and Chianti Rufina – ‘In Bolgheri it's not easy to find Sangiovese,’ third-generation Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta explained. 2022 saw slightly lower production than 2021 due to a warm spring and a rainy autumn. Macerations were shorter than previous years, and the wine retains the same blend as last year as part of the estate's continuing plans to make Le Difese approachable almost immediately and give it its own Tuscan identity. Bright red and purple scents with a creamy backdrop and herbal touches lead to a soft and textured palate full of fresh, tangy cherry and dark hedgerow berries. (JB)

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2022)
The 2022 Le Difese is plump, juicy and expressive, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Crushed flowers, succulent red cherry fruit, mint, spice and blood orange all race across the palate. This exuberant yet mid-weight coastal Tuscan red is a total pleasure bomb. The 2022 is an especially fine edition. It benefits from a warm year - which can be a positive for entry-level wines - earlier bottling and selection. Le Difese is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (both estate and non-estate sites) and Sangiovese, all purchased. (AG)

James Suckling (JS) : 91 Points (2022)
Bright and attracitve aromas of raspberries and cranberries with some cedar follow through to a medium body, with fine tannins and a crunchy finish. Fresh and crisp. Second wine of Sassicaia.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 91 Points (2022)
The 2022 Le Difese is made with 60% Sangiovese and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon and includes some grapes purchased from the Chianti in Ruffina to enhance the wine’s aromatic profile and freshness. The grapes see maceration on the skins for 15 days, then are aged in used barrels for eight months. Deep ruby with a tinge of light purple, this 2022 is aromatic of anise, fresh leather, and spiced cherries. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has ripe tannins, with a clean mineral touch.
