Region and Vineyards

The FAY vineyard is the birthplace of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars' story, established by Nathan Fay in 1961 as the first planting of Cabernet Sauvignon in what is now the Stags Leap District. Known for its voluptuous perfume and luscious texture, the vineyard is celebrated for producing wines with classic red and black berry tones, a fine-grained structure, and a distinctive elegance.

The 2020 vintage primarily sourced grapes from blocks 4, 3A, 3B, 8C2, 1, 6, 2B, and 2A, each contributing unique characteristics to the wine’s aromatic and structural complexity.

Winemaking

The 2020 growing season presented challenges, including a dry and hot climate, global disruptions from the pandemic, and wildfires. Rain during bloom naturally reduced fruit set, balancing the crop under dry soil conditions. These conditions resulted in wines with a riper character and intense concentration.

The FAY 2020 underwent fermentation in 100% stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation to soften its texture. The wine was aged for 21 months in 85% new French oak barrels, enhancing its depth and complexity. With a composition of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, the wine achieves a harmonious balance of fruit, structure, and elegance.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep garnet with brilliant clarity.
  • Aromas: Complex notes of blue fruit, Amarena cherry, licorice, and floral spice.
  • Palate: Fresh fruit flavors dominate, complemented by a creamy and savory mid-palate. The wine finishes with a velvety texture and elegant structure.

Did you know?

The FAY vineyard is where Nathan Fay planted Napa Valley's first Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the Stags Leap District, challenging the conventional wisdom of the time and laying the foundation for Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars' iconic legacy.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Herb-crusted lamb chops: Highlights the wine’s rich red fruit and velvety tannins.
  • Duck confit with cherry sauce: Complements the wine’s floral and fruity notes.
  • Wild mushroom risotto: Balances the wine’s creamy mid-palate and savory character.
  • Aged Gruyère or Comté cheese: Matches the wine’s complexity and structure.

History of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars

The history of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars began in 1970, when Warren Winiarski, a Harvard-educated philosophy professor turned winemaker, recognized the potential of a small prune orchard in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Inspired by the region’s volcanic soils and unique microclimate, he planted Cabernet Sauvignon and set out to create wines that combined power, elegance, and terroir expression.

Winiarski’s vision bore fruit in 1973, with the first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon from the S.L.V. vineyard (Stag's Leap Vineyard). Just three years later, this wine achieved global fame when it was declared the winner of the Judgment of Paris blind tasting in 1976, where it triumphed over some of France's most esteemed Bordeaux wines. This pivotal moment is widely regarded as a turning point in the history of Napa Valley, proving that California wines could rival the best in the world.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars expanded its reputation, refining its winemaking techniques and earning acclaim for its estate wines, particularly Cask 23, a blend of the finest lots from the S.L.V. and FAY vineyards. These wines became benchmarks for the Stags Leap District, a region officially recognized as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1989, with the winery playing a leading role in its establishment.

In 2007, the winery entered a new chapter when it was acquired by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and Antinori Family Estates, two world-renowned producers who brought their expertise and global perspective to the estate. Despite the change in ownership, the winery has maintained its focus on producing wines that express the unique terroir of the Stags Leap District. Today, under the leadership of Winemaker Marcus Notaro, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars continues to honor its rich history while innovating for the future.

Region and Vineyards

Located in the heart of the Stags Leap District, the estate spans 97 hectares (240 acres), with three renowned vineyards:

  • S.L.V. (Stag’s Leap Vineyard): Known for its volcanic soils, contributing structure and intensity to the wines.
  • FAY: Famous for its alluvial soils, producing wines with lush fruit, elegance, and a perfumed bouquet.
  • Arcadia Vineyard: Located in Coombsville, this site focuses on Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, offering vibrant and mineral-driven wines.

The Stags Leap District AVA benefits from a Mediterranean climate, with warm days that ensure ripeness and cool nights that preserve acidity and freshness. The region’s unique combination of volcanic and alluvial soils creates wines with both power and finesse.

Wine Range of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is celebrated for its exceptional range of wines, including:

  • Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon: A flagship wine blending the finest blocks of S.L.V. and FAY, known for its complexity, elegance, and aging potential.
  • S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon: A bold, structured wine with dark fruit and mineral notes from volcanic soils.
  • FAY Cabernet Sauvignon: A lush and aromatic wine showcasing red fruit and floral elegance.
  • Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon: A blend of estate-grown and Napa-sourced fruit, offering approachability and balance.
  • Karia Chardonnay: A vibrant and fresh Chardonnay with mineral-driven character.

Did you know?

The Judgment of Paris in 1976, where Stag's Leap Wine Cellars’ 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon won, is often credited as the moment that put Napa Valley on the map. It marked the first time a California wine outshone its French counterparts in a prestigious blind tasting.

Decanter (DCT) : 97 Points (2020)
From the legendary Fay vineyard, this 2020 Cabernet includes a 2% splash of Cabernet Franc, aged 21 months, in 85% new French oak. Expressive black cherry fruit is scented with crushed red rock minerality and notes of dried rose petals. Medium to full-bodied on the palate with a wealth of concentrated blackberry and cherry fruits supported by elongated, supple tannins. Fine-boned acidity brings clarity to this powerful, elegant, mineral-laced red, which possesses a balletic lightness balanced by muscular tension on the long, drawn-out finish. (JC)

Robert Parker (RP) : 94 Points (2020)
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Fay Vineyard features lovely cherry fruit, interwoven with strands of dried herbs, hints of black cherries and a touch of vanilla. It's medium to full-bodied, round and generous yet focused, showing typical Cabernet restraint and structure, then finishing with gentle, silky tannins and a big, highly enjoyable whack of cassis.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2020)
This perfumed and perfectly balanced wine brings a little restraint to the table. Raspberry, blackberry and mint flavors are braced in a lively way by good fruit acidity and moderate tannins for a slight grip in the texture. The wine will be easily paired with savory, meaty dishes and worth cellaring. Best from 2025–2035.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2020)
Aromas of crushed blackcurrants and cocoa-dusted black cherries with purple flowers and chocolate undertones. Full body. Broad and opulent with compact, plush and well-integrated tannins. Attractive succulence and finesse with a firm, lingering finish and notes of bitter spices and violets to close.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2020)
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon FAY is plump, juicy and super-expressive right out of the gate. Ripe red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, spice and white pepper all race across the palate. There is some edginess to the tannin, but this is 2020 after all. (AG)

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 91 Points (2020)
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Fay comes from a single vineyard in the Stags Leap District and is based on 98% Cabernet Sauvignon with 2% Cabernet Franc. Beautiful cr me de cassis, spring flowers, violets, and chalky mineral notes emerge on the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, with beautifully integrated background oak, ripe tannins, and a great finish.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 90 Points (2020)
Packs a core of boysenberry and plum puree notes, coated with melted licorice and backed by sweet toast on the finish. Offers a fine-grained feel, with a subtle tug of earth at the end. Drink now through 2035.
