Region and Vineyards

One Point Five is rooted in the heart of the Stags Leap District, one of Napa Valley's most celebrated AVAs for Cabernet Sauvignon. Known for its volcanic and gravelly soils, combined with warm days and cool nights, the region imparts ripe tannins, dark fruit purity, and remarkable finesse to its wines. The estate’s hillside sites and the Borderline Vineyard contribute intensity and backbone, while additional Napa Valley vineyards provide nuanced complexity.

Shafer's deep commitment to sustainable viticulture is evident across their 240-acre estate. The vineyards are farmed with meticulous precision to encourage optimal ripening and vineyard expression. The name “One Point Five” honors the close father-and-son partnership between John and Doug Shafer—symbolizing not a second generation, but a generation and a half.

Winemaking

The 2021 growing season offered ideal conditions: a long, dry summer with abundant sunshine and cool evenings. These factors led to beautifully concentrated fruit with clean aromatics and structural balance. The grapes were harvested at optimal ripeness, with Brix levels ranging from 23.5° to 25.8°.

The blend is composed of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot, and 1% Malbec. Fermentation was followed by 20 months of aging in 100% new French oak, sourced from Allier and Tronçais forests, lending the wine structure, depth, and luxurious texture. With 15.3% alcohol, the wine carries both richness and power without sacrificing elegance.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep garnet core with violet edges, dense and saturated.
  • Aroma: Expressive nose of black cherry, crème de cassis, ripe plum, lavender, and graphite, accented by hints of sweet tobacco and wild herbs.
  • Palate: Full-bodied and layered, with flavors of dark berries, cocoa, black olive, and baking spice. Polished tannins provide grip and poise, leading to a long, mineral-laced finish.

Did you know?

The name “One Point Five” is a playful reference to the family story behind the wine: Doug Shafer joined his father John in the winery so early that their collaboration is affectionately described as "a generation and a half"—not quite two.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Dry-aged ribeye steak with rosemary butter: The wine’s structure and bold fruit harmonize with the richness and char of the beef.
  • Braised short ribs with red wine reduction: Echoes the depth and savory notes of the Cabernet and its blending partners.
  • Wild mushroom risotto: Earthy tones complement the wine’s dark fruit and herbal complexity.
  • Hard cheeses like aged Comté or Manchego: Their umami intensity pairs beautifully with the wine’s ripe tannins and spice-laced finish.

History of Shafer

The story of Shafer Vineyards began in 1973, when John Shafer, then a corporate publishing executive from Chicago, made a bold career shift by purchasing a neglected vineyard in Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District. The land had been planted with grapes since the 1920s but had fallen into disuse. With no farming background, Shafer taught himself viticulture—famously learning to operate a TD-9 bulldozer, which would later give its name to one of the estate's wines. His determination and vision laid the groundwork for the estate’s future success.

In 1983, the winery released its first vintage of Hillside Select, made entirely from estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine soon gained cult status and critical acclaim, becoming one of Napa Valley’s most iconic labels. That same year, John’s son, Doug Shafer, joined the estate, bringing with him formal training in enology and viticulture. In 1984, Doug hired Elias Fernandez as assistant winemaker, and by 1994, Fernandez became head winemaker. The Shafer-Fernandez partnership is now one of the longest-standing winemaking collaborations in Napa Valley. Over the decades, Shafer built a reputation not only for wine quality but also for its early commitment to sustainability, solar power, and long-term stewardship of the land.

In 2022, after nearly 50 years of family ownership, Shafer Vineyards was acquired by the Kirin-owned Luxus Holdings, marking the next chapter in its storied evolution while maintaining continuity in viticulture and winemaking.

Region and Vineyards

Shafer’s heart lies in the Stags Leap District AVA, a sub-appellation of Napa Valley designated in 1989. Located just east of the Napa River, the district is flanked by the Vaca Mountains and is renowned for producing Cabernet Sauvignon with remarkable balance, elegance, and longevity. The terroir is defined by well-drained volcanic soils, including tufa and loam, and the region benefits from warm days and cool nights due to marine breezes from the San Pablo Bay. These conditions allow grapes to ripen fully while retaining acidity—crucial for freshness and aging potential.

Shafer farms approximately 200 acres of estate vineyards, including hillside and foothill parcels that bring both power and finesse to their wines. The Hillside Estate includes iconic blocks like Sunspot, Venado IlégaI, and Firebreak, which form the exclusive source for Hillside Select. The Red Shoulder Ranch vineyard, located in Carneros, supplies Chardonnay grapes and is named for the red-shouldered hawks that patrol the vineyard naturally managing pests. Every vineyard is managed under sustainable and solar-powered practices, with no herbicides used and cover crops employed to enhance soil health and biodiversity.

Wine Range of Shafer

Shafer's portfolio is compact but impactful, emphasizing estate-grown, terroir-expressive wines:

  • Hillside Select: The estate’s flagship wine. A 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from select hillside blocks, aged 32 months in new French oak. Known for its deep concentration, complexity, and capacity for 20+ years of aging. Released in limited quantities and highly allocated.
  • One Point Five: Named to reflect the close working relationship between John and Doug Shafer—“a generation and a half.” It is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend (often with small additions of Petit Verdot or Malbec) from both hillside and valley-floor sites. More accessible in youth than Hillside Select but retains serious structure and depth.
  • Relentless: A powerful and expressive blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah, named in honor of winemaker Elias Fernandez’s relentless dedication. Aged for 30 months in new oak, it’s known for richness, dark fruit, meaty undertones, and ageability.
  • TD-9: A bold yet approachable red blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec, named after the bulldozer John Shafer drove in his early vineyard days. Offers plush fruit, energy, and early-drinking charm with serious depth.
  • Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay: A single-vineyard Chardonnay from Carneros, fermented with native yeasts and aged without malolactic fermentation to retain natural acidity and vibrant fruit character. Aged in a mix of French oak and stainless steel, it’s a textured yet fresh white.

Did you know?

Shafer was one of the first Napa estates to convert to 100% solar power and eliminate herbicide use. The long-term collaboration between Doug Shafer and Elias Fernandez, now spanning more than three decades, is one of the most enduring and successful partnerships in modern California winemaking.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 96 Points (2021)
More Cabernet-dominated, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five checks in as 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot, and a splash of Malbec. It has incredible purity in its cassis, graphite, lead pencil, and camphor on the nose and a concentrated, medium to full-bodied, layered style on the palate that stays tighter and more compact than the TD-9. Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 96 Points (2021)
This sophisticated and concentrated wine wraps lovely dark plums, blueberries and cocoa flavors in velvety tannins that are well integrated and soothing, while still setting the wine up for a potentially long life. Subtle baking spices, espresso and cedar accents enhance the impressive fruit flavors.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2021)
Beautiful black and blue fruit on offer here with notes of violets, sea shell, iodine and graphite. Full-bodied, broad-shouldered and structured with super-fine and dense yet almost weightless tannins that push the depth of the wine, leading to a smooth, caressing finish. Try after 2026.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2021)
Frankly ripe, with a deep, alluring well of acai berry, blackberry and boysenberry puree flavors that glide through on the polished structure. Pretty flashes of spices, sweet bay and violet skitter through for contrast. The finish is polished, generous and fruit-filled. Drink now through 2038. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 94 Points (2021)
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is a very beautiful wine and also the first edition that marks the move towards a more serious Cabernet. Black cherry, plum, gravel, spice, leather and tobacco are nicely pushed forward. The 2021 shows the mid-weight style of the year nicely. The One Point Five is mostly estate fruit, with some outside vineyards, including sources that are now owned by Shafer. (AG) (12/2023)

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2021)
An excellent wine, still arguably a decent value in the context of Napa Valley Cab, Shafer's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five features attractive aromas of ripe cherries, cedar and vanilla, plus hints of mocha and loam. Full-bodied, ripe and velvety, it offers more concentration, tannins and length than the winery's TD-9.

Decanter (DCT) : 95 Points (2019)
Leading with red berry fruit marked by a minty freshness, espresso bean, cedar, and kirsch aromas. Medium to full-bodied, it envelops the palate with a panoply of brown spices, dried wild herbs, and spicy red berry fruit. Plush with silken tannins and a fantastic vein of minerality, finishing with minty chocolate flourishes. Aged 20 months, 100% new Allier and Tronçais barrels, includes a 2% splash of Petit Verdot. (JC) (2/2023)

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 94 Points (2019)
Elias Fernandez focuses this wine on two estate vineyards, one at the base of the Stags Leap Escarpment, on hills surrounding the winery, plus the Borderline vineyard two miles south. His 2019 has a soil-driven scent, picking up on the rocky, volcanic scree that forms the base of these knolls. Yet, in the best tradition of Shafer cabernet, it follows a clean line, like a well-built rock wall, the wine’s flavors infused with black-currant ripeness and blueberry-skin darkness that keeps smoking up in the finish (the wine has consumed a substantial amount of new oak). This has the stamina to last for a decade or two. (JG) (12/2022)
