Region and Vineyards

TD-9 2018 draws its character from three key vineyard sources across Napa Valley: the Stags Leap District, Yountville, and a foothill site along the Vaca Mountains, just south of Stags Leap. Each site offers a distinct terroir contribution—Stags Leap brings precision and structure with its volcanic soils and cooler climate; Yountville adds softness and roundness from its deeper alluvial soils; and the Vaca foothills provide intensity and mineral lift thanks to rocky terrain and sun exposure.

Shafer farms all these sites using sustainable viticulture. These vineyard blocks are chosen not only for their quality but for their complementary nature in a blend. Long hang times in 2018 allowed fruit to ripen slowly and develop complex aromas, ripe tannins, and vivid flavors—ideal conditions for crafting a red blend of richness and energy.

Winemaking

The 2018 vintage was marked by a cool and consistent summer, producing grapes with excellent color, bright aromatics, and refined acidity. Harvested between 23.5° and 25.5° Brix, the fruit entered the cellar in pristine condition.

The blend is composed of 56% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 21% Malbec, aged for 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels (Allier and Tronçais). This élevage adds polish, complexity, and supple texture to the naturally vibrant blend. With 15.3% alcohol, TD-9 2018 is rich and generous, yet finely balanced by juicy freshness and well-knit structure.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep ruby with violet highlights.
  • Aroma: Intense and aromatic, featuring summer berries, rose petal, rhubarb, raspberry, and black cherry jam. Floral and earthy tones add lift and intrigue.
  • Palate: Lush and energetic, brimming with red and black berry fruit, spice, and a hint of wild herbs. Plush tannins and a savory finish deliver length and elegance.

TD-9 is named after the International Harvester TD-9 tractor that John Shafer taught himself to operate when he left his corporate life in Chicago to start Shafer Vineyards in 1973—a symbol of risk, reinvention, and the adventurous Napa spirit.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Grilled duck breast with cherry glaze: The wine’s fruit core and supple texture echo the richness and sweetness of the dish.
  • Beef tenderloin with rosemary jus: A classic pairing that highlights the wine’s structure and savory notes.
  • Mushroom and thyme risotto: Earthy flavors enhance the wine’s herbal and spicy complexity.
  • Aged Manchego or Tomme de Savoie: Nutty, semi-hard cheeses soften the blend’s youthful tannins and frame its red fruit.

History of Shafer

The story of Shafer Vineyards began in 1973, when John Shafer, then a corporate publishing executive from Chicago, made a bold career shift by purchasing a neglected vineyard in Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District. The land had been planted with grapes since the 1920s but had fallen into disuse. With no farming background, Shafer taught himself viticulture—famously learning to operate a TD-9 bulldozer, which would later give its name to one of the estate's wines. His determination and vision laid the groundwork for the estate’s future success.

In 1983, the winery released its first vintage of Hillside Select, made entirely from estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine soon gained cult status and critical acclaim, becoming one of Napa Valley’s most iconic labels. That same year, John’s son, Doug Shafer, joined the estate, bringing with him formal training in enology and viticulture. In 1984, Doug hired Elias Fernandez as assistant winemaker, and by 1994, Fernandez became head winemaker. The Shafer-Fernandez partnership is now one of the longest-standing winemaking collaborations in Napa Valley. Over the decades, Shafer built a reputation not only for wine quality but also for its early commitment to sustainability, solar power, and long-term stewardship of the land.

In 2022, after nearly 50 years of family ownership, Shafer Vineyards was acquired by the Kirin-owned Luxus Holdings, marking the next chapter in its storied evolution while maintaining continuity in viticulture and winemaking.

Region and Vineyards

Shafer’s heart lies in the Stags Leap District AVA, a sub-appellation of Napa Valley designated in 1989. Located just east of the Napa River, the district is flanked by the Vaca Mountains and is renowned for producing Cabernet Sauvignon with remarkable balance, elegance, and longevity. The terroir is defined by well-drained volcanic soils, including tufa and loam, and the region benefits from warm days and cool nights due to marine breezes from the San Pablo Bay. These conditions allow grapes to ripen fully while retaining acidity—crucial for freshness and aging potential.

Shafer farms approximately 200 acres of estate vineyards, including hillside and foothill parcels that bring both power and finesse to their wines. The Hillside Estate includes iconic blocks like Sunspot, Venado IlégaI, and Firebreak, which form the exclusive source for Hillside Select. The Red Shoulder Ranch vineyard, located in Carneros, supplies Chardonnay grapes and is named for the red-shouldered hawks that patrol the vineyard naturally managing pests. Every vineyard is managed under sustainable and solar-powered practices, with no herbicides used and cover crops employed to enhance soil health and biodiversity.

Wine Range of Shafer

Shafer's portfolio is compact but impactful, emphasizing estate-grown, terroir-expressive wines:

  • Hillside Select: The estate’s flagship wine. A 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from select hillside blocks, aged 32 months in new French oak. Known for its deep concentration, complexity, and capacity for 20+ years of aging. Released in limited quantities and highly allocated.
  • One Point Five: Named to reflect the close working relationship between John and Doug Shafer—“a generation and a half.” It is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend (often with small additions of Petit Verdot or Malbec) from both hillside and valley-floor sites. More accessible in youth than Hillside Select but retains serious structure and depth.
  • Relentless: A powerful and expressive blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah, named in honor of winemaker Elias Fernandez’s relentless dedication. Aged for 30 months in new oak, it’s known for richness, dark fruit, meaty undertones, and ageability.
  • TD-9: A bold yet approachable red blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec, named after the bulldozer John Shafer drove in his early vineyard days. Offers plush fruit, energy, and early-drinking charm with serious depth.
  • Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay: A single-vineyard Chardonnay from Carneros, fermented with native yeasts and aged without malolactic fermentation to retain natural acidity and vibrant fruit character. Aged in a mix of French oak and stainless steel, it’s a textured yet fresh white.

Shafer was one of the first Napa estates to convert to 100% solar power and eliminate herbicide use. The long-term collaboration between Doug Shafer and Elias Fernandez, now spanning more than three decades, is one of the most enduring and successful partnerships in modern California winemaking.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2018)
This has a meaty nose with grilled plums, smoke, tapenade and dried leaves. Some tomato paste. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins. Broad and flavorful with a distinctively savory, saline finish. 56% merlot, 23% cabernet sauvignon and 21% malbec. Better from 2021.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 93 Points (2018)
The 2018 TD-9 Proprietary Red Blend is based on 56% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Malbec. It's another balanced, charming, and impeccably made wine from this estate that has lively red and blue fruits, scorched earth, graphite, and licorice aromas and flavors as well as a medium to full-bodied, elegant style on the palate. It shows the more streamlined, focused style of the 2018 vintage and is going to evolve for 10-12 years.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2018)
The 2018 TD-9, Shafer's Merlot-based blend, is just as delicious from bottle as it was from barrel. Succulent dark red cherry/red plum fruit, licorice, spice, lavender and dried herbs are front and center. Readers will find a gorgeous 2018 that is ready to deliver plenty of pleasure from the get-go. (AG) (1/2021)

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 92 Points (2018)
This vintage of TD-9, named for the founder’s favorite tractor, combines 56% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Malbec. Aromatic tones of rose and raspberry meet accents of cedar, tobacco leaf, iron and crushed rock, all while maintaining an intensely full-bodied, structured feel.

Robert Parker (RP) : 91 Points (2018)
A blend of 58% Merlot and 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Red Blend TD-9 displays a medium to deep garnet-purple color and expressive notes of blueberry compote, mulberries and plum preserves plus nuances of potpourri, dried Provence herbs and tar. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a lively backbone creating great tension with the ripe, plummy flavors and rounded tannins, finishing with an enticing herbal lift.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17 Points (2018)
TD-9 is a proprietary blend that celebrates a bold move. In 1973, in the space of a few months, John Shafer went from riding morning commuter trains in Chicago to teaching himself to drive a TD-9 tractor in his Napa Valley vineyard. He’d never grown grapes or made wine in his life. TD-9 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec from a vineyard in the foothills of the Vaca Mountains just south of Stags Leap District. Aged for 20 months in 60-gallon French oak barrels (100% new). Dark ruby. A really very alluring blend of ripeness and savour. Not too heavy with some pace – even if quite a bit of sweetness, counterbalanced by fine tannin and freshness. 17/20 points (JR) (7/2021)
