Region and Vineyards

Shafer Hillside Select is rooted exclusively in the Stags Leap District, a revered appellation in the southeastern portion of Napa Valley. This AVA is internationally renowned for producing Cabernet Sauvignon of extraordinary purity, balance, and longevity. The district’s signature terroir—volcanic soils layered with ancient river sediments—offers exceptional drainage and low fertility, encouraging vines to struggle, resulting in smaller berries with concentrated flavor. Combined with dramatic diurnal temperature shifts, the region’s climate preserves acidity and structure while allowing full phenolic ripeness.

The wine is sourced from Shafer’s estate hillside parcels: Sunspot, John’s Upper 7, Venado Ilegal, and Firebreak. These steep, rugged vineyard blocks are cultivated with painstaking care, and their extreme slope angles ensure maximum sun exposure and airflow, leading to exceptional fruit quality. Yields are kept deliberately low, and all vineyard work is performed with sustainable viticultural practices, reinforcing the estate’s deep respect for the land and its long-term vitality. These elevated sites give Hillside Select its hallmark power, complexity, and ability to age gracefully for decades.

Winemaking

The 2018 growing season was long, cool, and even—offering ideal ripening conditions. The fruit enjoyed extended hang time under Napa’s summer sun, developing deep color, layered aromas, and intense concentration.

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine was fermented and then aged for 32 months in 100% new French oak (from Allier and Tronçais forests). The extended élevage builds structure, complexity, and polish. With 15.5% alcohol, the wine displays generous opulence while maintaining impeccable balance—an achievement of both vineyard and cellar precision.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Opaque ruby with purple hues, signaling depth and concentration.
  • Aroma: Intense notes of blackberry, black cherry, warm earth, lavender, and baking spice, lifted by floral and mineral accents.
  • Palate: Bold yet refined, with flavors of briar fruit, black plum, cassis, mocha, and cinnamon. Rich tannins and vibrant acidity frame a long, radiant finish with energy and finesse.

Did you know?

Hillside Select has been produced since 1978 and is only made from Shafer’s most select hillside blocks. Its name reflects the vineyard’s dramatic slopes—some of Napa Valley’s most prized Cabernet sites.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Dry-aged prime rib with black truffle jus: Richness and depth echo the wine’s dark fruit and oak-spiced palate.
  • Venison loin with blackberry gastrique: The wild fruit and gamey notes mirror the wine’s briary complexity.
  • Porcini mushroom ragù with polenta: Earthy tones complement the Cabernet’s savory layers and mocha nuances.
  • Aged Gouda or Comté: Their nutty, crystalline character pairs beautifully with the wine’s opulence and structure.

History of Shafer

The story of Shafer Vineyards began in 1973, when John Shafer, then a corporate publishing executive from Chicago, made a bold career shift by purchasing a neglected vineyard in Napa Valley’s Stags Leap District. The land had been planted with grapes since the 1920s but had fallen into disuse. With no farming background, Shafer taught himself viticulture—famously learning to operate a TD-9 bulldozer, which would later give its name to one of the estate's wines. His determination and vision laid the groundwork for the estate’s future success.

In 1983, the winery released its first vintage of Hillside Select, made entirely from estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine soon gained cult status and critical acclaim, becoming one of Napa Valley’s most iconic labels. That same year, John’s son, Doug Shafer, joined the estate, bringing with him formal training in enology and viticulture. In 1984, Doug hired Elias Fernandez as assistant winemaker, and by 1994, Fernandez became head winemaker. The Shafer-Fernandez partnership is now one of the longest-standing winemaking collaborations in Napa Valley. Over the decades, Shafer built a reputation not only for wine quality but also for its early commitment to sustainability, solar power, and long-term stewardship of the land.

In 2022, after nearly 50 years of family ownership, Shafer Vineyards was acquired by the Kirin-owned Luxus Holdings, marking the next chapter in its storied evolution while maintaining continuity in viticulture and winemaking.

Region and Vineyards

Shafer’s heart lies in the Stags Leap District AVA, a sub-appellation of Napa Valley designated in 1989. Located just east of the Napa River, the district is flanked by the Vaca Mountains and is renowned for producing Cabernet Sauvignon with remarkable balance, elegance, and longevity. The terroir is defined by well-drained volcanic soils, including tufa and loam, and the region benefits from warm days and cool nights due to marine breezes from the San Pablo Bay. These conditions allow grapes to ripen fully while retaining acidity—crucial for freshness and aging potential.

Shafer farms approximately 200 acres of estate vineyards, including hillside and foothill parcels that bring both power and finesse to their wines. The Hillside Estate includes iconic blocks like Sunspot, Venado IlégaI, and Firebreak, which form the exclusive source for Hillside Select. The Red Shoulder Ranch vineyard, located in Carneros, supplies Chardonnay grapes and is named for the red-shouldered hawks that patrol the vineyard naturally managing pests. Every vineyard is managed under sustainable and solar-powered practices, with no herbicides used and cover crops employed to enhance soil health and biodiversity.

Wine Range of Shafer

Shafer's portfolio is compact but impactful, emphasizing estate-grown, terroir-expressive wines:

  • Hillside Select: The estate’s flagship wine. A 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from select hillside blocks, aged 32 months in new French oak. Known for its deep concentration, complexity, and capacity for 20+ years of aging. Released in limited quantities and highly allocated.
  • One Point Five: Named to reflect the close working relationship between John and Doug Shafer—“a generation and a half.” It is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend (often with small additions of Petit Verdot or Malbec) from both hillside and valley-floor sites. More accessible in youth than Hillside Select but retains serious structure and depth.
  • Relentless: A powerful and expressive blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah, named in honor of winemaker Elias Fernandez’s relentless dedication. Aged for 30 months in new oak, it’s known for richness, dark fruit, meaty undertones, and ageability.
  • TD-9: A bold yet approachable red blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Malbec, named after the bulldozer John Shafer drove in his early vineyard days. Offers plush fruit, energy, and early-drinking charm with serious depth.
  • Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay: A single-vineyard Chardonnay from Carneros, fermented with native yeasts and aged without malolactic fermentation to retain natural acidity and vibrant fruit character. Aged in a mix of French oak and stainless steel, it’s a textured yet fresh white.

Did you know?

Shafer was one of the first Napa estates to convert to 100% solar power and eliminate herbicide use. The long-term collaboration between Doug Shafer and Elias Fernandez, now spanning more than three decades, is one of the most enduring and successful partnerships in modern California winemaking.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 100 Points (2018)
Incredible purity and precision, as well as opulence, define the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select, and this is as good as any Cabernet Sauvignon in the world today. Revealing a deep purple hue as well as a thrilling bouquet of pure crème de cassis, black raspberries, spring flowers, lead pencil shavings, and an incredible minerality, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, seamless texture, ample mid-palate depth, and a great finish. This is classic 2018 Napa Valley with its purity, freshness and precision as well as sensational concentration and perfectly integrated acidity, tannins, and alcohol. It delivers pleasure today yet warrants a solid 4-5 years of bottle age and is going to be a 30- to 40-year wine.

James Suckling (JS) : 99 Points (2018)
So much black licorice in this, together with tar, blackcurrants, blackberries and slate. Full-bodied, but very toned and focused, with polish and energy. Extremely fine tannins and wonderful length. All about balance and purity. Gorgeous now, but this will age for decades to come. Great finish. Better after 2026.

Robert Parker (RP) : 98 Points (2018)
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select displays a deep garnet-purple color. It charges out of the gate with bold crème de cassis, blueberry pie and black cherry preserves notes, plus hints of smoked meats, fragrant earth and tar, with a fragrant waft of violets and Provence herbs. Full-bodied, the palate is packed with muscular black fruits, supported by a solid foundation of firm, grainy tannins and compelling freshness, finishing long with an enticing herbal lift.Rating: 98+

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 98 Points (2018)
Just as it was from barrel, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is stunning. Bright acids give the 2018 tons of energy. This is an especially mid-weight, refined Hillside Select that is all class. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, mint and blood orange build in the glass. Elegant and bright, the 2018 shows all the energy of the year in spades. (AG) (9/2021)

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 97 Points (2018)
Shafer’s iconic, flagship wine is richly textured and flavor packed. It starts with a minty, figgy, bay-leaf aroma before full, ripe, bold black fruits, tobacco and oak spices take over the palate, accompanied by masses of velvety tannins. Excellent depth and concentration will help it age well. Cellar Selection

Wine Spectator (WS) : 95 Points (2018)
Frankly ripe but well-focused, with blackberry and creamed boysenberry notes flowing through atop a polished structure, while cocoa and black licorice frame the finish. A subtle hint of sassafras lingers on the finish, adding textural nuance. This has the stuffing to age well, too. Drink now through 2038.
