Winemaking:

The grapes, coming from the best Touriga Franca plots of Quinta do Crasto, are brought to the winery in 22 kg plastic boxes where they undergo strict selection. After complete destemming and slight crushing, the juice is transferred to temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Once the alcoholic fermentation is completed, the juice is gently pressed. Aging: 8 months in French oak barrels.

Tasting Notes:

Deep purple in color. On the nose, it impresses by its intensity and concentration of aromas of red fruits, which are in perfect harmony with delicate floral notes. The palate is rich and elegant, with excellent volume and silky tannins, all very well integrated with notes of red fruits. The finish is balanced and delivers an extraordinary persistence and freshness. A wine that perfectly reflects the identity of the Touriga Franca grape variety.

Located on the right bank of the Douro River, between the towns of Régua and Pinhão, Quinta do Crasto is a property of 130 hectares, 70 of which are planted with vines.

Nestled on a privileged location in the Douro Demarcated Region, Quinta do Crasto has belonged to the family of Leonor and Jorge Roquette for over a century and like all the great properties of the Douro it dates back to ancient times - the name "Crasto" is derived from the Latin word "castrum", which means "Roman fort".

The large investments made over the past few years have seen considerable advancements in the reorganisation of the vineyards and the implementation of modern equipment in the winery. This work has resulted in a great selection of top-quality wines, including blended wines (Crasto, Crasto Superior and Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vines), single varietal wines (Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional), single vineyard wines (Vinha da Ponte and Vinha Maria Teresa), and special category of Port wines (Finest Reserve, LBV and Vintage).

Despite the use of state-of-the-art winemaking technology, Quinta do Crasto maintains its traditional foot treading method, carried out in large granite tanks called "lagares".

The completion of this phase of investment and the passion for making exceptional wines has contributed to Quinta de Crasto´s growing national and international reputation.

Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2017)
This 2017 Touriga Franca is the second release of Crasto's new monovarietal, sourced from 36-year-old vines in two vineyards. It was aged for 18 months in 90% new French oak and comes in at 14.5% alcohol. This was a vat sample when seen, but it was the final blend. Solid in the mid-palate and nicely concentrated, this overall has a serious and somewhat stern demeanor. There are hints of herbs and licorice, but the key here is the structure and how it coats the palate more than any fruity personality. It's not fleshy or sweet but rather reserved. Yet it is gripping all the while. With aeration, it comes around fairly quickly, becoming much more elegant. This is a nice step forward for Crasto with this new brand. It could use a year in the bottle. It should hold reasonably well, granting that there is no track record. There were 7,689 bottles produced, plus some large-format bottles.
