Region and Vineyards

Quinta do Crasto is situated in the renowned Douro appellation, specifically within the Douro Superior sub-region. The vineyard plots at Quinta da Cabreira range from 130 to 450 meters in altitude, which contribute to the balanced ripening of the grapes.

Winemaking

The Quinta do Crasto Superior Tinto is crafted from a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Souzão. The grapes are meticulously harvested and sorted at the winery. They are then destemmed and slightly crushed, with the must transferred to temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for fermentation.

Ageing

The wine is aged for approximately 12 months in French oak barrels, which enhances its structure and imparts subtle spice notes, complementing the natural fruit character of the grapes.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep violet.
  • Aroma: Aromas of wild berry fruits harmoniously integrated with hints of forest wood and fine spices.
  • Palate: The wine opens elegantly, evolving into a full-bodied and structured palate with silky tannins and rich berry fruit notes. The finish is balanced and long, reflecting the wine's Douro Superior origins.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Slow-Braised Brisket: The robust structure and berry flavors complement the rich, savory notes of slow-braised brisket.
  • Roast Goose: The wine's tannins and spice enhance the hearty, gamey flavors of roast goose.
  • Rabbit Fricassee: The wine's complexity and fruit notes pair well with the delicate yet flavorful profile of rabbit fricassee.
  • Hearty Vegetable Stew: The balance and depth of the wine match beautifully with the richness of a hearty vegetable stew.

Located on the right bank of the Douro River, between the towns of Régua and Pinhão, Quinta do Crasto is a property of 130 hectares, 70 of which are planted with vines.

Nestled on a privileged location in the Douro Demarcated Region, Quinta do Crasto has belonged to the family of Leonor and Jorge Roquette for over a century and like all the great properties of the Douro it dates back to ancient times - the name "Crasto" is derived from the Latin word "castrum", which means "Roman fort".

The large investments made over the past few years have seen considerable advancements in the reorganisation of the vineyards and the implementation of modern equipment in the winery. This work has resulted in a great selection of top-quality wines, including blended wines (Crasto, Crasto Superior and Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vines), single varietal wines (Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional), single vineyard wines (Vinha da Ponte and Vinha Maria Teresa), and special category of Port wines (Finest Reserve, LBV and Vintage).

Despite the use of state-of-the-art winemaking technology, Quinta do Crasto maintains its traditional foot treading method, carried out in large granite tanks called "lagares".

The completion of this phase of investment and the passion for making exceptional wines has contributed to Quinta de Crasto´s growing national and international reputation.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 90 Points (2019)
A creamy red, with hints of graphite, hot stone and smoke underscoring ripe, juicy flavors of blackberry pie, damson plum preserves and accents of herbed black olive, toast and espresso. Bright on the palate and medium- to full-bodied, with chalky tannins firming the finish.

Robert Parker (RP) : 89 Points (2019)
The 2019 Tinto is one-fourth a field blend from old vines (over 80 years old), with the rest being 30% Touriga Nacional, 20% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinta Roriz and a dollop of Sousao. It was partly (10%) aged for 16 months in well used French oak, the rest in stainless steel. It comes in at 13.9% alcohol. Reasonably concentrated and unsurprisingly pure, this is fresh and elegant but deliciously fruity. There's not a lot of power, and this is not one you want to age a long time, but it tastes great now. It won't disappoint in the short to mid-term.

James Suckling (JS) : 90 Points (2018)
The 2018 Tinto Crasto Superior is a blend of 50% Touriga Nacional, 20% Tinta Roriz, 25% Touriga Franca and just 5% Sousão, aged for 12 months in 35% new French oak. It comes in at 14.2% alcohol. The grapes are all sourced from Quinta da Cabreira in Douro Superior. Delicious, rich and concentrated in its expression of fruit, this is another fine Superior. Apart from its concentration of fruit, it adds ripe tannins for support and velvet for texture. It seems bigger than it is on paper, the ripe fruit controlling the palate. Perhaps one of its components was riper than the others, but overall it works. You can drink this now. It should hold for another decade.
