Looking in on the 389 can be "'can be," she says, parenthetically) a good insight into what we can expect from the upcoming Grange. Now, they are very different wines, no question, however, stylistically they have much in common and the illumination into the season that birthed the wines in each instance. Here, the 2020 Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz has consummate polish and sleek tannins, imbued as they are with graphite, black tea, licorice and resin. The fruit is pure and black and chewy... gorgeous wine. And it lives for decades. This has always been a collector's dream and continues so through this vintage. Highly recommended.

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2020)
Very rich, ripe and intense, this has plenty of depth and is one of the strongest statements of Penfolds’ house style. Rich vanillin and sweetly spicy American oak on the nose, with chocolate, blueberry, violet, blackberry and iodine notes. The palate delivers quite approachable and supple texture, smoothly fleshy and inviting. Flavors of blackberry, blackcurrant and mulberry abound. Deep and ripe finish with nutty tannins to close. A blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Padthaway. Drink or hold.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2020)
Dense and succulent, with velvety tannins and a core of spiced plum and blackberry. The details and aromatics take this wine to the next level—reminiscent of dark chocolate and Black Forest cake, Kalamata olive, nutmeg and palo santo. Gains momentum on the long, expressive finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Drink now through 2037.

Decanter (DCT) : 95 Points (2019)
With its seamless textural slide across the palate, this is a superb example of what is considered a distinctly Australian blend, showing both generosity and serious intent. A magnificent full nose leads to a lively dance of red plums over blue and black fruits, although the strong acid spine results in a rather sharp finish. Time in the cellar will reveal more integrated harmony between the essential elements. Drinking Window 2021 - 2045.

Bob Campbell MW (BC) : 96 Points (2018)
Very deep, dark red colour with a good tint of purple. The bouquet is sweetly super-ripe with loads of blackberry jam and fruit sweetness, the palate likewise sumptuously deep in fruit with oak keeping very much in the background. The flavour fills the mouth superbly and continues long into the aftertaste, harmonised by lashings of soft, ripe tannins. There are definite notes of cassis and herb from the cabernet component and the oak contributes a subtle trace of charred timber that complements the fruit. Sumptuous fruit sweetness. A ripping wine that seems to be less oak-marked than this wine traditionally is. (HH) (7/2020)

James Halliday (JH) : 96 Points (2018)
This '20 release marks the 60th anniversary of Bin 389. It is a 57/43% blend from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Coonawarra, Robe and Wrattonbully, matured in American hogsheads (38% new). A perennial favorite of mine, though the price does cause me to blink. It has great color, and a supple mouthfeel that invests the wine with a hint of elegance, underlined by the fluid, flawless balance, the length a given. (JH) (8/2020)

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 94 Points (2018)
Deep violet color. Cherry-cola, cassis, pipe tobacco, coconut and cured tobacco on the highly perfumed, smoke- and spice-accented nose. Sappy and impressively concentrated, offering an array of red and dark fruit preserve and spice flavors and hints of licorice, mocha and candied flowers. Closes very long and gently chewy, with resonating spiciness and slowly building tannins that add subtle grip. (JR) (12/2021)

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17.5 Points (2018)
So luxurious! Exquisite black cherry and chocolate on the palate, stylish vanilla oak and buttery tannins. Finishes with the sweetest dryness possible, if that isn't too (oxy)moronic a thing to say. 17.5/20 points (RH) (3/2021)
