Region and Vineyards

The Willamette Valley AVA stretches from Portland to Eugene and is one of the world's most admired cool-climate regions for Pinot Noir. Influenced by the Pacific Ocean and protected by the Cascade and Coast ranges, it boasts a Mediterranean climate moderated by maritime breezes. This balance of sun and coolness promotes long growing seasons, critical for Pinot Noir’s aromatic complexity and acid retention.

Fruit for the 2021 cuvée was sourced from nine vineyards spanning six sub-appellations, including the Dundee Hills and Eola-Amity Hills AVAs. Notable sites include Jory Hills Vineyard with its red volcanic soils, and the marine sedimentary soils of WillaKenzie Estate and Gran Moraine. Clonal diversity, including 114, 115, 667, 777, 828, and Pommard, adds layers of complexity. The 2021 vintage was marked by climatic extremes — ice storms, a record heatwave, and September rain — yet it yielded grapes of superb quality with concentrated flavors and refreshing acidity.

Winemaking

Grapes were hand-harvested and hand-sorted, reflecting La Crema’s dedication to precision. A portion underwent whole-cluster fermentation, adding structural tension and aromatic lift. The remainder was gently de-stemmed, followed by a cold soak at 9°C for 2 to 4 days to enhance color and aromatic extraction.

Fermentation occurred in open-top tanks with varied cap management — punchdowns, pumpovers, and pulsed air — tailored to the characteristics of each lot. After fermentation, the free-run juice settled for two days before racking into 100% French oak barrels (20% new) for six months of aging. The wine remained on lees until the final blend, showcasing a detailed and expressive style with no racking before bottling, preserving purity and site character.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Medium ruby with bright clarity and youthful edges.
  • Aroma: Raspberry, cranberry, and orange zest intertwine with delicate floral notes of violet and a touch of savory spice.
  • Palate: Supple tannins frame a core of red fruit and citrus, complemented by hints of cedar, fresh herbs, and earth. The finish is nuanced, long, and elegant.

Did you know?

The name La Crema Vinera means "the best of the vine" — a philosophy that guides the estate’s focus exclusively on cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Willamette Valley bottling extends this legacy to one of the New World's most expressive terroirs.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Seared duck breast with orange gastrique: Elevates the citrusy edge of the wine and balances its soft tannins.
  • Grilled salmon with wild mushrooms: A classic Pinot pairing that mirrors the wine’s earthy depth and supple texture.
  • Roasted beet and goat cheese salad: Echoes the wine’s red fruit and floral tones with vibrant acidity.
  • Herb-crusted pork tenderloin: Highlights the wine’s cedar-spice and savory complexity.

History of La Crema

Founded in 1979 under the original name La Crema Vinera—Latin for “the best of the vine”—the estate was born out of a vision to focus solely on cool-climate varietals in California. From its inception, La Crema embraced a philosophy rooted in the meticulous exploration of microclimates and soil diversity to express the nuanced character of each vineyard.

In 1993, La Crema was acquired by Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke, founders of Jackson Family Wines, who elevated its profile through strategic vineyard acquisitions and a commitment to sustainability. Under their stewardship, La Crema expanded its reach from Sonoma to include other prestigious coastal appellations such as the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Anderson Valley, Monterey, Willamette Valley (Oregon), and Sta. Rita Hills. Each step in this growth was guided by an unwavering belief in site expression and small-lot winemaking.

Today, winemaker Craig McAllister leads the cellar with a precision-focused approach, combining traditional techniques like hand-harvesting and barrel aging with a modern sensitivity to balance and freshness. His work continues to emphasize vineyard individuality, especially in La Crema's acclaimed single-vineyard bottlings.

Region and Vineyards

La Crema’s vineyard holdings and grower partnerships span across coastal and hillside terroirs, all defined by their cool climates, fog influence, and complex soils. The Russian River Valley, with its Goldridge soils and diurnal shifts, is central to the estate’s identity, offering silky, aromatic Pinot Noir and rich yet vibrant Chardonnay.

In Monterey, La Crema captures the marine-influenced freshness and extended growing seasons through wines with tropical nuance and mineral tension. In Willamette Valley, the estate has embraced Oregon’s volcanic and sedimentary soils, producing elegant, high-acid Pinot Noirs with floral and savory complexity.

Each vineyard - be it Saralee’s, Gran Moraine, or Zena Crown - is farmed with an emphasis on sustainability. All estate vineyards are certified sustainable, and vineyard practices include soil health management, water conservation, and biodiversity enhancement.

Wine Range of La Crema

La Crema’s wine portfolio is built around cool-climate expression, varietal purity, and elegant structure, with a primary focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The range includes both regional appellation blends and limited single-vineyard bottlings, complemented by carefully selected alternative varietals.

  • Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: Signature wines of the estate, offering bright acidity, red berry finesse, and coastal minerality.
  • Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: Richer, more textured expressions with ripe cherry, plum, baking spice, and citrus zest, drawn from fog-cooled, low-vigor vineyards.
  • Monterey Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris: Wines marked by tropical fruit notes, crisp acidity, and saline freshness, sourced from marine-influenced Central Coast vineyards.
  • Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: Elegant, floral, and restrained, these Oregon-grown wines deliver fine tannins and cool-climate precision.
  • Anderson Valley Pinot Noir: A limited-production wine with lifted aromatics, wild berry character, and earthy complexity from Mendocino’s remote coastal hills.
  • Single-Vineyard Selections (e.g., Saralee’s, Kelli Ann, Bellflower): Micro-parcel wines highlighting terroir nuance, clonal diversity, and barrel-aged structure.
  • Rosé of Pinot Noir: A seasonal release showcasing delicate red fruits, floral notes, and a dry, vibrant finish.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County: A recent addition to the range—fruit-forward and softly structured, this wine marks La Crema’s debut in Bordeaux varieties while maintaining a cool-climate signature.
  • Sparkling Rosé (limited release): Crafted in small quantities, offering freshness, elegance, and refined effervescence.

Sleek and vibrant, with snappy raspberry and red plum flavors accented by sweet basil and spice and finishing with fine-grained tannins.

Very pure fruit aromas with ripe cherry essence and some strawberry. The palate has a soft, creamy feel with a distinctive, kirsch-like core of flavor. Crunchy tannins cradle fluid fruit flesh. Drink now.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2018)
Part of the Jackson Family portfolio, this widely-available wine marries spicy berry and black-cherry fruit to barrel flavors of cocoa powder. Tannins are buffed to a fine gloss, and come to a final focus with a hint of green tea. Some 23% was aged in new French oak.
