Region and Vineyards

The wine originates from Burn Cottage Vineyard, a 5.8-hectare biodynamic estate situated in Central Otago. This north-east-facing vineyard, established in 1999, lies on low-vigor soils composed of lake-bed silts, loams, quartz sands, and schist gravels, enriched by pockets of pedogenic lime—a rare feature in semi-arid soils.

The region’s continental climate delivers warm days and cool nights, preserving the natural acidity of the grapes while allowing for a slow and even ripening process. The 2021 growing season featured a warm spring with occasional frost scares, followed by favorable dry weather during harvest, resulting in smaller but highly concentrated yields.

Winemaking

Burn Cottage’s approach to winemaking is deeply rooted in biodynamic principles. The grapes were harvested between March 19th and April 6th, with an average Brix of 23.2. The fruit underwent 7% whole-bunch fermentation, adding complexity to the wine’s aromatics and structure. Fermentation lasted for 17 days, with gentle manual punchdowns.

The wine was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels, 18% of which were new, sourced from cooperages like Damy, Mercurey, and Sylvain. Minimal sulfur was used, and the wine was bottled without filtration to preserve its natural character.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Medium ruby with a vibrant hue.
  • Aroma: Aromatic layers of cherry, violets, and spices, accented by bramble and wet stone minerality.
  • Palate: Supple and refined, showcasing red and dark fruits, elegant floral notes, and savory spices. Fine tannins frame the wine, leading to a long, balanced finish.

Did you know?

Burn Cottage is the only estate in Central Otago farmed biodynamically since its inception, a commitment inspired by winemaker Ted Lemon’s philosophy. The estate’s name pays homage to the road it sits on, but also reflects the estate’s connection to nature and holistic farming.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Duck breast with cherry sauce: The wine’s red fruit and acidity complement the rich flavors of the duck.
  • Roast pork with herbs and apple: Its savory and fruity balance enhances the dish’s sweet and herbal notes.
  • Wild mushroom tart with thyme: The earthy and floral elements of the wine align beautifully with this umami-rich dish.
  • Aged Gouda or Brie: The wine’s minerality and finesse pair excellently with creamy, nutty cheeses.

History of Burn Cottage Estate

Founded in 2002, Burn Cottage quickly gained a reputation for excellence in the world of wine. The estate was established by Americans Marquis and Dianne Sauvage, who were captivated by the potential of Central Otago to produce world-class wines, particularly Pinot Noir. Marquis Sauvage was inspired to create a vineyard that would work harmoniously with the environment, adopting biodynamic practices from the beginning.

Ted Lemon, a renowned winemaker with experience in Burgundy and California, was brought in as a consultant to guide Burn Cottage’s winemaking philosophy. His expertise helped shape the estate’s vision of producing wines that reflect the vineyard’s unique terroir, using minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the winery.

Since its first vintage in 2009, Burn Cottage has become known for producing exceptional Pinot Noir and has earned accolades for its commitment to sustainability and its ability to craft wines that are true to the vineyard's natural environment.

Region and Vineyards

Burn Cottage is located in the Lowburn sub-region of Central Otago, New Zealand’s southernmost wine-growing area and one of the best regions in the world for cool-climate Pinot Noir. Central Otago’s continental climate, with its hot summers, cool nights, and long growing season, is ideal for growing Pinot Noir grapes. The region’s soils are composed of schist, clay, and gravel, which contribute to the distinct minerality and depth of Burn Cottage’s wines.

The Burn Cottage Vineyard covers 24 hectares, with plantings of Pinot Noir, Riesling, and Grüner Veltliner. The vineyard is farmed according to biodynamic principles, which means that the farming practices are guided by the lunar calendar and focus on maintaining soil health, biodiversity, and the overall well-being of the vineyard ecosystem.

The estate’s Pinot Noir vines are planted at a high density, which encourages competition between the vines, resulting in lower yields but more concentrated and complex fruit. The use of cover crops and natural composts also enhances the vitality of the vineyard, ensuring that the wines truly reflect the terroir of Central Otago.

Wine Range

Burn Cottage focuses on producing Pinot Noir but also crafts limited amounts of Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. The winery’s approach is based on minimal intervention, allowing the natural characteristics of the grapes and vineyard to shine through in the wines.

  • Burn Cottage Pinot Noir: The estate’s flagship wine, this Pinot Noir showcases the vibrant red fruit, spice, and earthy complexity that Central Otago is known for, with a refined structure and long aging potential.
  • Moonlight Race Pinot Noir: A blend from three different vineyard sites in Central Otago, including Burn Cottage, Sauvage Vineyard, and Luna Vineyard, offering a more accessible expression of Central Otago Pinot Noir with vibrant fruit and layered complexity.
  • Sauvage Vineyard Pinot Noir: A single-vineyard Pinot Noir from the estate's Sauvage Vineyard, this wine highlights the depth, power, and elegance of the vineyard’s terroir.
  • Riesling & Grüner Veltliner: Limited-production wines that are made with the same focus on purity and expression as the estate’s Pinot Noir.

Did You Know?

Burn Cottage was one of the first vineyards in Central Otago to adopt biodynamic farming practices from the outset. Additionally, Burn Cottage's philosophy is rooted in a belief that farming in harmony with the land not only benefits the environment but also leads to more expressive and distinctive wines.

Robert Parker (RP) : 96 Points (2021)
The 2021 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir is alive and energetic, svelte and composed. As I write this, I am sitting at the bottom of the Burn Cottage Vineyard in Lowburn, looking up the rows. This is a mineral, nuanced expression, with graphite and white tea, pomegranate pearls, raspberry licorice, rosehips and crushed pink peppercorns. This is what I came here for. It’s thrilling, lacy, delicate and focused. Exciting wine, exciting drinking. It sits on the palate nicely—evenly weighted, and it spools through the long finish... yes! 13.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 95 Points (2021)
This vibrant red offers an energetic mix of black cherry, blueberry preserves, chai tea, black pepper and dried rose petal, with a whiff of hinoki incense. The plump tannins are stretched across the firm structure, creating a velvety impression on the long finish. Drink now through 2036.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2021)
Baked strawberries, pomelo zest and potpourri with underlying sweet spices of red licorice and ground cloves. Medium-bodied, finely-grained silky tannins with refreshing acidity. A hint of tomato leaf notes at the end. Zesty and flavorsome. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
