Region and Vineyards

The Sonoma Coast AVA is one of California’s most renowned cool-climate regions, heavily influenced by the nearby Pacific Ocean. Persistent coastal fog and breezy afternoons extend the growing season, slowing ripening and preserving the vibrant acidity essential to great Chardonnay. This climatic balance allows fruit to achieve full phenolic maturity without excessive sugar accumulation, yielding wines of precision and length.

The 2022 vintage was marked by a dry winter and early budbreak due to unusually warm February weather. Spring and early summer remained mild, but late August and September brought record-breaking heat, hastening the harvest. While yields were slightly below average, the berries were intensely concentrated, resulting in wines with notable depth and flavor intensity. Harvest commenced on August 25, signaling a brisk, fast-paced season along the Sonoma Coast.

Winemaking

The grapes were gently pressed and settled for 24 hours before being racked into barrels for fermentation. 94% of the wine underwent barrel fermentation, using a blend of French (75%) and American (25%) oak, with 17% new oak contributing gentle layers of spice and texture. A partial malolactic fermentation was induced in 15% of the barrels using a house strain, which were later used to top the remaining lots, offering a subtle creamy undertone without diminishing vibrancy.

The wine aged on its lees for six months, with monthly bâtonnage (lees stirring) enhancing mouthfeel and complexity. No racking occurred during this period, allowing the wine to develop richness and integration naturally. Bottled in April 2023, the resulting Chardonnay presents a textural balance between tension and roundness, with precise fruit expression and a lingering mineral finish.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Pale straw with brilliant clarity.
  • Aroma: Meyer lemon, Asian pear, and white flowers unfold gracefully, accented by delicate oak spice.
  • Palate: Juicy apple, golden peach, and pineapple meet creamy notes of graham cracker crust. Vibrant and fleshy with a vein of acidity driving a persistent, elegant finish.

Did you know?

La Crema has been a pioneer in cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir since 1979, focusing exclusively on coastal appellations. The Sonoma Coast Chardonnay reflects the winery’s commitment to sustainability and precision winemaking, with all fruit sourced from vineyards managed under environmentally responsible practices.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Butter-poached lobster with lemon beurre blanc: Elevates the wine’s citrus and cream notes while complementing its texture.
  • Roast chicken with herbs and root vegetables: Harmonizes with the wine’s richness and fruit complexity.
  • Crab cakes with aioli: Mirrors the wine’s vibrant acidity and subtle oak-spice.
  • Brie and pear tart: A refined pairing that plays on fruit, fat, and texture.

History of La Crema

Founded in 1979 under the original name La Crema Vinera—Latin for “the best of the vine”—the estate was born out of a vision to focus solely on cool-climate varietals in California. From its inception, La Crema embraced a philosophy rooted in the meticulous exploration of microclimates and soil diversity to express the nuanced character of each vineyard.

In 1993, La Crema was acquired by Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke, founders of Jackson Family Wines, who elevated its profile through strategic vineyard acquisitions and a commitment to sustainability. Under their stewardship, La Crema expanded its reach from Sonoma to include other prestigious coastal appellations such as the Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast, Anderson Valley, Monterey, Willamette Valley (Oregon), and Sta. Rita Hills. Each step in this growth was guided by an unwavering belief in site expression and small-lot winemaking.

Today, winemaker Craig McAllister leads the cellar with a precision-focused approach, combining traditional techniques like hand-harvesting and barrel aging with a modern sensitivity to balance and freshness. His work continues to emphasize vineyard individuality, especially in La Crema's acclaimed single-vineyard bottlings.

Region and Vineyards

La Crema’s vineyard holdings and grower partnerships span across coastal and hillside terroirs, all defined by their cool climates, fog influence, and complex soils. The Russian River Valley, with its Goldridge soils and diurnal shifts, is central to the estate’s identity, offering silky, aromatic Pinot Noir and rich yet vibrant Chardonnay.

In Monterey, La Crema captures the marine-influenced freshness and extended growing seasons through wines with tropical nuance and mineral tension. In Willamette Valley, the estate has embraced Oregon’s volcanic and sedimentary soils, producing elegant, high-acid Pinot Noirs with floral and savory complexity.

Each vineyard - be it Saralee’s, Gran Moraine, or Zena Crown - is farmed with an emphasis on sustainability. All estate vineyards are certified sustainable, and vineyard practices include soil health management, water conservation, and biodiversity enhancement.

Wine Range of La Crema

La Crema’s wine portfolio is built around cool-climate expression, varietal purity, and elegant structure, with a primary focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The range includes both regional appellation blends and limited single-vineyard bottlings, complemented by carefully selected alternative varietals.

  • Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: Signature wines of the estate, offering bright acidity, red berry finesse, and coastal minerality.
  • Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: Richer, more textured expressions with ripe cherry, plum, baking spice, and citrus zest, drawn from fog-cooled, low-vigor vineyards.
  • Monterey Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris: Wines marked by tropical fruit notes, crisp acidity, and saline freshness, sourced from marine-influenced Central Coast vineyards.
  • Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: Elegant, floral, and restrained, these Oregon-grown wines deliver fine tannins and cool-climate precision.
  • Anderson Valley Pinot Noir: A limited-production wine with lifted aromatics, wild berry character, and earthy complexity from Mendocino’s remote coastal hills.
  • Single-Vineyard Selections (e.g., Saralee’s, Kelli Ann, Bellflower): Micro-parcel wines highlighting terroir nuance, clonal diversity, and barrel-aged structure.
  • Rosé of Pinot Noir: A seasonal release showcasing delicate red fruits, floral notes, and a dry, vibrant finish.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County: A recent addition to the range—fruit-forward and softly structured, this wine marks La Crema’s debut in Bordeaux varieties while maintaining a cool-climate signature.
  • Sparkling Rosé (limited release): Crafted in small quantities, offering freshness, elegance, and refined effervescence.

Did you know?

La Crema was among the first wineries to recognize the world-class potential of cool-climate coastal sites in California for Pinot Noir, long before they became fashionable. The winery’s original name—La Crema Vinera—is a tribute to its founding principle: producing only “the best of the vine.”

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 91 Points (2022)
Predominantly from two high-elevation estate vineyards, Sable Mountain and Skycrest, the 2022 Chardonnay is rounded, fleshy, rich, and fruit-forward. It's also nicely cohesive and textured, with an appealing approachability and great backbone of acidity. With muscle and structure coming from Skycrest, it finds balance in the suppleness and silky texture of Sable Mountain fruit.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 90 Points (2022)
Appealing for how all of its pieces fit together, offering notes of salted butterscotch, peach preserves, mango and orange blossoms, with a thread of baking spices. Shows vibrant acidity and a seamless texture on a generous frame.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 90 Points (2022)
This wine is a beautiful, vibrant gold in the glass, conveying delicate floral aromatics on the nose. On the palate, very ripe pear, marzipan and sweet cinnamon emerge. There’s also a potent, perfumy dried-floral component that some drinkers will love.

Decanter (DCT) : 90 Points (2021)
When a rich, full-bodied Chardonnay is needed, this California classic never disappoints. Notes of Meyer lemon and sweet spice on the nose, plus dairy/cream and toasted marshmallow on the palate. The 'crowd pleaser' that will pair with most anything on a holiday table. (BC)
