Manfred is certainly one of the world's more eccentric wine producers and a tasting in his drawing room with him is always enjoyable and entertaining.

In the Sonnenuhr of Wehlen he owns a portion of one of the Mittel Mosel's top vineyards. Its steep south-facing dark slate slopes tend to result in deeply flavoured, mineral yet rich and smoky wines.

In addition, he manipulates some plots in the next door Himmelreich of Graacher which produces engaging wines with fresh acidities that are slightly softer and earlier maturing.

These are unashamedly classic, exciting and long-lived wines produced predominantly in stainless tanks to avoid the addition of too much sulphur, though a small proportion of wooden casks are retained, however, depending on the vintage.

They are bottled later than most Mosel and often take a few years in bottle before showing the true character, but patience will be rewarded!

Robert Parker (RP) : 95 Points (2020)
The 2020 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett offers a discreet and sublime, complex and very elegant and slightly flinty nose with a coolish and very delicate expression of stewed apricots but also some greenish berries, whereas the first stony character remains. This irresistible and noble bouquet leads to a round and lush yet also refined and savory palate, with coolish apricot flavors on the long and sustainably salty finish that is firmly structured but elegant and highly stimulating. This is a superb, very elegant and complex, sustainably structured Sonnenuhr.

James Suckling (JS) : 95 Points (2020)
This smells like walking into a high-class store, where a huge basket of peaches and nectarines is standing on the counter. Super-elegant and precise with a spot on balance of racy acidity, wet stone minerality and delicate fruit. Very long and pristine finish. Drink or hold. (7/2022)

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2020)
A lightweight, intense white defined by a mix of floral, peach, celery seed, chive and slate aromas and flavors. Racy and linear, with a terrific finish. Drink now through 2038.

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17 Points (2020)
Even more inscrutable on the nose than the Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett from the same vintage! But real density on the palate and the firmness and acidity are such that this almost tastes like a dry wine. Absolutely classic J J Prüm with considerably less obvious sulphite influence than at one stage. But I assume that SO2 has played a part in this wine's reticence. Sensation of molten light honey on the very end despite the initial dry impression. Recommended to the patient. 17+/20 points (JR) (9/2021)

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 93 Points (2018)
Light-footed and lean, this zesty off-dry Riesling is enticingly smoky and earthen on the nose, but the palate reverberates with juicy pineapple, mango and lemon flavors. It's a juicy, intensely fruity sip but still tightly wound in its youth. While hard to resist already, it's a bottle that will gain depth well through 2030.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2017)
It took three days for this wine to emerge from its reductive funk, but it was worth the wait: With air, this becomes sleek and elegant, its floral notes and juicy apple flavors carried on a smooth, oily texture that gives it substance. If you open it now, decant; but better to give it another year or two in bottle before pulling the cork with sashimi.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 90 Points (2016)
Lot of citrus, sweet lime, and mint emerge from the 2016 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett, which is certainly a good value at the price. Medium-bodied, pure, beautifully balanced, with an off-dry, juicy style on the palate, it’s a joy to drink.
