Region and Vineyards
The Mosel Valley, one of the world's most revered winegrowing regions, is famed for its steep slate slopes, cool climate, and remarkable expressions of Riesling. The Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard, situated in the heart of the Mittelmosel, is perhaps the most famous of them all. Literally meaning "sundial of Wehlen," it was named for the sundial installed by Jodocus Prüm in the 19th century—an emblem that now signifies some of the finest Rieslings in Germany.
This site is characterised by deep, weathered grey slate soils and an extreme slope of up to 70%, with a south-southwest exposure that ensures optimal ripening even in cool years. The 2022 vintage, marked by low rainfall and exceptional warmth, required meticulous vineyard management, including green harvesting, to relieve stress on the vines and maintain fruit integrity. The resulting wines are pure and structured, with impressive ageing potential and a crystalline expression of terroir.
Winemaking
Made exclusively from 100% Riesling, the grapes for this Spätlese were hand-harvested with great precision between September 19th and October 22nd, 2022. Although the vintage was not particularly high in botrytis, the meticulous selection allowed Joh. Jos. Prüm to produce a classic range including Kabinett, Spätlese, and Auslese levels.
Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, preserving the aromatic purity and delicate freshness of the fruit. The wine was then left to rest on its fine lees, enhancing textural depth and complexity. With only 7.5% alcohol, this is a quintessential Mosel Spätlese—low in alcohol yet high in flavour intensity, delicacy, and elegance. No oak is used, in keeping with the estate's philosophy of purity and transparency.
Tasting Notes

- Palate: Lusciously textured yet exquisitely balanced, the wine unfolds with flavours of green apple, ripe pear, and candied citrus, supported by a precise, vibrant acidity. The finish is mineral-driven and persistent, hinting at the wine's potential to evolve beautifully over decades.
Did you know?
The Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard owes its name to a literal sundial installed by the Prüm family in the early 1800s. The site's fame today is largely due to the legacy of Joh. Jos. Prüm, whose meticulous vineyard work and commitment to classic Mosel style helped elevate this vineyard into global renown. The Spätlese style, traditionally harvested late ("spät"), often results in wines that beautifully straddle sweetness and acidity, aging gracefully for 30 years or more.
Wine Pairing Ideas
- Peking duck: The wine's acidity and sweetness cut through the richness, while the stone fruit and floral notes echo the dish's aromatic glaze.
- Pork with apple compote: Complements the wine's green apple and honeyed character while matching the sweetness level.
- Thai green curry: The gentle sweetness and low alcohol help temper the heat and enhance the dish's herbal-spicy complexity.
- Soft cheeses (e.g. Camembert or Brie): The contrast of creamy textures and refreshing acidity is both classic and irresistible.
