Region and Vineyards

Eden Valley, part of the larger Barossa Zone in South Australia, is renowned for its high-altitude vineyards and cooler climate. The region's elevation up to 600 meters above sea level and rolling hills provide an ideal environment for premium viticulture. The sandy loam soils over gravel and bedrock with patches of clay offer excellent drainage and vine stress, contributing to the intense flavors and structure in the wines.

The Henschke Eden Valley vineyard, established in the 1960s, is meticulously managed using biodynamic principles, ensuring the health and vitality of the vines. The vineyard's north-facing slope captures optimal sunlight, aiding in the development of rich, concentrated fruit.

Winemaking

The Henschke Cyril Henschke Cabernet is crafted from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which were harvested at the peak of ripeness. The winemaking process begins with fermentation in traditional open-top concrete tanks, allowing for gentle extraction of color, flavor, and tannins. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation, which imparts a creamy texture and enhances the wine's complexity.

The wine is then aged for 18 months in 32% new and 68% seasoned French oak hogsheads, a choice that balances the infusion of oak characteristics without overpowering the varietal expression. This careful ageing process contributes to the wine's depth, structure, and longevity.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Dark garnet with ruby hues.
  • Aroma: Fragrant and perfumed with thyme, marjoram, cassis, blackcurrant, blackberry compote, and violets, complemented by hints of cedar, nutmeg, dark chocolate, and pepper.
  • Palate: A deep and textural palate featuring fresh redcurrant, plum, bay leaf, and dark baking spices, supported by refreshing acidity and fine cocoa-dusted tannins for an endless finish.

Did you know?

The Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon is named after Stephen Henschke's father, Cyril Henschke (1924-1979), who was a pioneering figure in Australian winemaking. Cyril planted the original Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the late 1960s, and the wine has been produced as a single-vineyard expression since 1978, celebrating the vineyard's unique terroir and the family's commitment to quality and innovation.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Wagyu Rump Cap with Crispy Tofu, Pickled Radish, and Eel Sauce: The rich umami flavors of Wagyu beef and eel sauce complement the wine's depth and tannic structure.
  • Herb-Crusted Lamb Chops: The aromatic herbs enhance the wine's complex bouquet, while the lamb's richness matches the robust palate.
  • Roast Duck with Plum Sauce: The sweet and savory plum sauce echoes the wine's dark fruit notes, creating a harmonious pairing.
  • Aged Cheddar: The sharp, tangy flavors of aged cheddar balance the wine's richness and accentuate its lingering finish.

History of Henschke Estate

The Henschke estate was established in 1868 by Johann Christian Henschke, who emigrated from Silesia, Germany, to Australia in the mid-19th century. The winery gained early recognition for its quality wines and has been passed down through generations, each contributing to its legacy.

Cyril Henschke, representing the third generation, was a pioneering winemaker who introduced single-vineyard wines, including the now-iconic Hill of Grace in 1958. His innovative approach and commitment to quality set the foundation for the estate’s modern reputation.

Today, the estate is managed by fifth-generation winemakers Stephen and Prue Henschke, who continue to uphold the family’s traditions while integrating sustainable and biodynamic farming practices. Under their leadership, Henschke has maintained its status as one of Australia’s premier wine producers, celebrated globally for its exceptional wines.

Region and Vineyards

The Henschke vineyards are located primarily in the Eden Valley, with some holdings in the Barossa Valley. The Eden Valley's elevation and cooler climate provide ideal conditions for growing premium grape varieties, particularly Shiraz, Riesling, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The soils in this region are diverse, ranging from sandy loam over clay to rocky schist, contributing to the complexity and unique character of the wines.

The Hill of Grace vineyard is perhaps the most famous, featuring some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world, planted in the 1860s. These ancient, dry-grown vines produce grapes of remarkable depth and intensity, forming the backbone of Henschke’s flagship wine.

Other notable vineyards include Mount Edelstone, renowned for its Shiraz, and Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills, known for its cool-climate varieties.

Wine Range

Henschke offers a diverse range of wines, each reflecting the unique terroir of their respective vineyards. The portfolio includes:

  • Hill of Grace: An iconic single-vineyard Shiraz, known for its depth, complexity, and aging potential.
  • Mount Edelstone: Another distinguished Shiraz from ancient vines, celebrated for its rich flavors and elegant structure.
  • Keyneton Estate Euphonium: A harmonious blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot, showcasing the synergy of Barossa and Eden Valley fruit.
  • Johann’s Garden: A tribute to the early German settlers, this blend of Grenache, Mataro, and Shiraz is vibrant and aromatic.
  • Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon: Named after Cyril Henschke, this wine exemplifies the excellence of Eden Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
  • Tilly’s Vineyard: A crisp and refreshing white blend, highlighting the diversity of the Henschke vineyards.

Did you know?

The Hill of Grace vineyard, located opposite the historic Gnadenberg Church, draws its name from the German term Gnadenberg, meaning "Hill of Grace." This vineyard, with vines over 150 years old, remains ungrafted and is one of the few pre-phylloxera vineyards in the world. The Henschke family’s dedication to preserving these ancient vines showcases their commitment to heritage and excellence in winemaking.

James Halliday (JH) : 96 Points (2018)
Some of the vines for this wine were planted by Cyril Henschke back in the 1960s. Matured in French oak (10% new) for 18 months. Bright blackberry and blackcurrant fruits with top notes of redcurrant and red cherry. Olive tapenade, cedar, light briar notes and mountain herbs. Fine lacy acidity and tight, powdery tannin provide the frame, and there is no doubt that this release will age magnificently. (3/2023)

James Suckling (JS) : 96 Points (2018)
Beautiful, attractive cabernet characters with cigars, tobacco leaf, currants, savory tapenade and sweet roasted chili peppers. Cocoa powder and star anise, too. Intense, but remaining fluid with a bright, red-fruited center palate followed by a lengthy, layered finish, full of Spanish chocolate and cigar box characters. Lasting almost a minute.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2018)
Oh-so-Henschke in style, this distinctive Cab is rich and lucid, with a heady nose of stewed plums and blackcurrant cordial, and an underbelly of iodine and beet root, that leads to a silky, succulent palate that's laced with ripe, chalky, tannins, and a blackberry finish. A few years of bottle age puts this in a sexy spot now, but it can go another decade at least.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2018)
The 2018 vintage of the Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon marks the 38th release of this wine. The 3.2-hectare single vineyard from which the fruit hails is planted on a combination of sandy loam and clay, over a bedrock of mica schist. The 2018 Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, matured in a combination of new (10%) and seasoned (the balance) French oak hogsheads for 18 months prior to blending and bottling. On the nose, tobacco leaf, blackberry, resin/tar, salted licorice and vanilla pod rise to the fore. In the mouth, the wine is fluid, pretty and composed, with a restrained outlay of flavors across the long finish. I had thought initially that the wine displayed aromatically as quite green; a glance at the numbers told me this might be unlikely (14.5% alcohol, pH 3.56, total acidity 6.5 gram per liter); however, there are certainly inflections in the mouth that support this notion. This is very elegant. The cassis is revealed as the wine opens. Give it time.Rating:93+

Decanter (DCT) : 96 Points (2016)
A classy nose, where notes of earth, gravel, cedar and lilac join plush, ripe, blackcurrant and cassis fruit. Juicy blackcurrants to the fore on the deep palate, mingling with fleshier mulberry, dried mint, earth and compost nuances along with an amplified floral accent – heady lilacs versus the violets of 2015. Powdery, mouthcoating tannins and ripe, redcurrant acidity underpin the long, mineral wet-stone finish. This marathon runner wears its plush fruit and firm structure lightly. (3/2021)
