The insanely steep, red-soil Ürziger Würzgarten vineyard produces wines of a completely unique nature in the Mosel valley.

The wines show the typically juicy and exotic fruit of the Grosse Lage (grand cru) “spice garden” vineyard, with a rich mouth feel, a spicy acid tingle and lingering finish.

Kabinett is the lightest, most delicate style of Riesling in Germany, made from early harvested grapes that are just barely ripe.

So much wild berry and herb fruit, but also wonderful textural complexity on the palate. Generous tannins give this a kick, interlocking with the minerality, spice and juicy fruit in a really exciting way.

The 2019 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett is bright and fresh on the delicate, spring-like bouquet that reveals floral, lemon-fresh and crunchy slate aromas. Juicy-piquant and terribly fresh on the palate, this is a lean, light and refreshing yet not substantial Kabinett that is good for the mornings and warmest days of the year. Tasted at the domain in September 2020.

This zingy kabinett is such an irresistible lightning bolt of Riesling. While subtle and mineral on the nose, the palate jolts with lime, yellow-peach and tangerine flavors struck by tangs of salt and slate. Light in body yet piercing in style, it finishes long on a murmur of spice and earth. It’s hard not to drink this one immediately but it should hold through 2030 as well.

Crisp and snappy, this has an uplifting prickle of CO2 that emphasizes its zesty acidity. It blossoms with air, taking on an arugula-like spice that weaves through its pithy citrus flavors while savory minerality provides the base notes. It’s full-bodied yet delicate, with a sense of springtime in its freshness.

Decanter (DCT) : 92 Points (2018)

This is a lovely weighty Riesling, showing a more noticeable sweetness than the Erdener (despite lower residual sugar of 39.4g/l). It's so appley and juicy at the moment, although you can imagine it opening up in a few years to reveal more complexity. Drinking Window 2019 - 2030

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 92 Points (2018)

Red raspberry and lime dominate on a penetrating nose, anticipating the animating and refreshing juiciness that then prevails on a polished palate. The vibrantly lingering finish is transparent to smoky, stony and mouthwateringly saline nuances. Schug volunteered that in the course of summer 2019, his assessments and rankings of his Kabinetts changed, and perhaps they will again, though he agreed that today this Würzgarten has the edge vis-à-vis its fellow Kabinetts. It certainly also transcends inherent vintage-specific limitations on vinous levity and animation, and should prove long-lived. Drinking window: 2020 - 2034

Ripe and juicy, this opens with a saffron note, followed by pear and apricot flavors, detailed by subtle hints of honey. Shows great focus and intensity throughout, ending with a long, mouthwatering finish.
