Region and Vineyards
Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2025 is sourced largely from the Wairau Valley floor in Marlborough, at the north-eastern tip of New Zealand's South Island. Key fruit sources include the Estate, Motukawa, Widow's Block, Red Shed and Mustang vineyards, with important sites around Rapaura, Renwick and Brancott Valley. The area combines a dry, sunny maritime climate with free-draining alluvial soils built from gravel, silt, sand and loam.
These conditions are especially well suited to Sauvignon Blanc. Long sunshine hours encourage flavour development, while cool nights help preserve acidity and aromatic definition. In 2025, exceptionally warm flowering produced unusually large, full bunches, followed by a slower ripening period through an overcast mid-summer. The vineyard team reduced crop load and waited for flavour maturity. Sauvignon Blanc harvest began on 17 March and finished on 2 April, with parcels picked according to ripeness and acid balance.
Winemaking
The 2025 is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. After harvest, the free-run juice was cold settled, then racked and inoculated with selected yeast. Fermentation took place primarily in stainless steel tanks to preserve aromatic clarity and freshness. Around 1.8% of the final blend fermented at warmer temperatures in large-format oak vats, while a further portion used wild yeast to add texture and complexity without masking the variety's bright character.
Each vineyard parcel was vinified separately before blending. Selection was notably strict: 80 different components were tasted and only 61 were selected for the final wine. The producer's technical information records a pH of 3.26 and total acidity of 7.62 g/L. The style is shaped principally by stainless-steel fermentation, selective blending and a very small oak-fermented component.
