Region and Vineyards

The Mills Vineyard is part of the Mt. Harlan appellation, located in the Gavilan Mountains about 40 kilometers east of Monterey Bay. The vineyard is planted at an altitude of 670 meters (2,200 feet), making it one of the highest and coolest vineyard sites in California. The site was selected for its limestone soils, which contribute to the wine’s minerality and structure, and the cool climate, which preserves the natural acidity and allows for slow ripening of the grapes.

The growing season started with replenishing spring rains, followed by temperate, sunny days and cool nights. This long, even growing season allowed the grapes to ripen slowly, resulting in wines with bright acidity, pure fruit flavors, and excellent aging potential.

Winemaking

The Mills Vineyard Pinot Noir is made from 100% Pinot Noir and was fermented using 100% whole clusters with indigenous yeasts in open-top fermenters to enhance complexity. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, with 30% new oak to provide structure and 70% neutral oak to maintain the wine’s purity and freshness.

This careful winemaking process results in a wine that balances richness and elegance, with a focus on expressing the unique character of the vineyard. The limestone soils and cool-climate conditions shine through in the wine’s vibrant acidity and refined texture.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep ruby with brilliant clarity.
  • Aroma: Alluring aromas of raspberry, cherry, and bramble, intertwined with notes of sweet saddle leather and a touch of spice.
  • Palate: On the palate, lush layers of plum and ripe blackberry are framed by supple tannins. A hint of tobacco leaf adds nuance and sophistication, leading to a robust and complex finish.

Did you know?

The Mills Vineyard was planted in 1984, making it one of the oldest Pinot Noir vineyards in Mt. Harlan. The vineyard is own-rooted, meaning the vines are not grafted onto a separate rootstock, a practice that is rare but allows for a more direct expression of the terroir.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Roast Pork with Plum Sauce: The wine’s plum and blackberry flavors complement the sweetness of the plum sauce, while its tannins balance the richness of the pork.
  • Wild Mushroom Risotto: The earthiness of the mushrooms pairs beautifully with the wine’s dark fruit and subtle spice, while its acidity cuts through the creamy texture of the risotto.
  • Duck Breast with Cherry Reduction: The wine’s bright fruit and supple tannins are a perfect match for the richness of duck, with the cherry reduction echoing the fruit flavors in the wine.
  • Aged Gouda: The wine’s robust finish and fruit-driven profile are complemented by the nutty, caramelized flavors of aged Gouda.

History of Calera Wines Estate

The story of Calera Wines begins in 1975, when Josh Jensen, inspired by his experience at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Burgundy, set out to replicate the unique terroir he had encountered in France. After studying at Yale and Oxford, Jensen worked at renowned Burgundy estates, where he developed a passion for Pinot Noir and the limestone soils essential to producing great wines. Determined to find a similar environment in California, Jensen spent two years searching for the ideal site and finally discovered it on Mt. Harlan, in the Gavilan Mountains.

In 1975, Jensen purchased a remote, limestone-rich parcel of land and planted his first three estate vineyards: Jensen, Reed, and Selleck. These vineyards, located at an elevation of over 670 meters (2,200 feet), are some of the highest and coolest vineyard sites in California, ideal for producing elegant and age-worthy wines. The winery was named "Calera," the Spanish word for limekiln, in reference to the limestone kiln still standing on the property, a nod to the terroir’s rich calcareous soils.

Over the years, Calera has gained a reputation as one of California’s finest producers of Pinot Noir, and Jensen worked tirelessly to establish the Mt. Harlan American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1990. Today, Calera is revered for its terroir-driven wines, including single-vineyard Pinot Noirs that express the unique character of the Mt. Harlan vineyards.

Region and Vineyards

The Mt. Harlan AVA, where Calera is located, is known for its extreme climate and elevation. Situated in the Gavilan Mountains, about 40 kilometers east of Monterey Bay, the vineyards benefit from the cooling marine air that sweeps over the site, maintaining lower temperatures compared to other wine regions in California. This allows for a long growing season, which preserves the natural acidity of the grapes while encouraging slow, even ripening.

The vineyards of Mt. Harlan are planted in limestone-rich soils, which contribute to the wines' signature minerality and structure. The estate’s vineyards are some of the highest in California, with elevations reaching up to 760 meters (2,500 feet). The winery owns six vineyard parcels, including Jensen, Reed, Selleck, Mills, de Villiers, and Ryan, all known for producing world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Wine Range

Calera produces a range of wines that highlight the unique terroir of Mt. Harlan and the Central Coast. Their portfolio includes:

  • Single-Vineyard Pinot Noirs: From the Jensen, Selleck, Reed, Ryan, Mills, and de Villiers vineyards, these wines are the flagship of Calera’s production, each expressing the individual characteristics of its site.
  • Chardonnay: The Mt. Harlan Chardonnay is known for its rich texture and minerality, reflecting the limestone soils.
  • Viognier and Aligoté: Produced in small quantities, these varietals showcase the winery’s dedication to crafting wines with finesse.
  • Central Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: These wines, sourced from premier vineyards across the Central Coast, offer excellent value and are crafted with the same attention to detail as the estate wines.

Did you know?

Josh Jensen was one of the earliest pioneers to recognize the potential of California Pinot Noir. His decision to plant vineyards on Mt. Harlan was considered audacious at the time due to its remote location and challenging growing conditions. Despite these obstacles, Calera is now regarded as one of the only wineries in the world with its own AVA, and Robert Parker once referred to it as “California’s Romanée-Conti”.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 94 Points (2018)
Small yields and moderate to warm weather result in a Mills that’s generous in 2018, with a richness that’s delicious and satisfying. Mike Waller has managed to retain a wild savor here that gives the wine completeness and intricacy, a complex spice of dust and herb oils, sundried tomato and an earthy, rooty depth, all woven seamlessly around the fruit. It should age beautifully.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 93 Points (2018)
Roasted cherry and juniper aromas give a rugged mountain angle to this bottling, but there's also splashes of fresh fruit. Gritty tannins could use a touch more time, but they wrap firmly around flavors of elderberry, blackberry, chaparral herb and oak. Drink 2023–2038.Cellar Selection

Wine Spectator (WS) : 92 Points (2018)
Enticing, with expressive blood orange, red tea and mulled raspberry aromas and flavors racing through. Features light incense and savory accents on the finish, which shows nice tension and length.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 97 Points (2017)
The 2017 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard is slightly deeper colored (it's still translucent) and offers a gorgeous nose of ripe redcurrants, cherries, spring flowers, sappy forest floor, and ample spice nuances. With medium to full body, beautiful depth of fruit, and a seamless texture, it's another stunning Pinot Noir from this team that I'd be happy to have in the cellar.

Robert Parker (RP) : 90 Points (2017)
Pale to medium ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard, aged 17 months in 30% new French oak, has a floral-laced nose of cranberries, fresh raspberries, orange peel, tea leaves, potpourri and saline with an earthy undercurrent. Light to medium-bodied, it's bright, fresh and lifted with a finely grainy frame and juicy acidity on the finish. 1,046 cases produced.
