Region and Vineyards

The Ryan Vineyard is located in the Mt. Harlan appellation, situated in the Gavilan Mountains 40 kilometers east of Monterey Bay. At an elevation of 670 meters (2,200 feet), this site is one of the highest and coolest in California, offering optimal conditions for growing Pinot Noir. The vineyard’s limestone-rich soils contribute to the wine’s signature minerality and structure, while the cool climate preserves the natural acidity and allows for slow, even ripening.

The growing season began with replenishing spring rains, followed by mild, sunny days and cool nights. This long, temperate growing season, with no significant heat spikes, produced wines with vibrant acidity, enticing aromatics, and pure varietal expression.

Winemaking

The Ryan Vineyard Pinot Noir is made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, fermented in whole clusters with indigenous yeast in open-top fermenters to enhance complexity and mouthfeel. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, with 30% new oak to add structure and 70% neutral oak to preserve the freshness of the fruit.

The result is a wine with luxurious layers of fruit, finely integrated tannins, and a long, complex finish. The influence of oak adds depth, but the focus remains on the vibrant purity of the fruit.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Bright ruby with clear, brilliant hues.
  • Aroma: Aromas of Rainier cherry, lavender, yellow plum, and raspberry, with a touch of black pepper and cola adding complexity.
  • Palate: Plush and supple on the palate, with flavors of blackberry, cherry cola, and hints of spice. The tannins are soft and refined, leading to a long, layered finish with lingering notes of black pepper.

Did you know?

The Ryan Vineyard was planted in 1998, making it one of the more mature vineyards in the Mt. Harlan appellation. Its vines are rooted in limestone soils, similar to the renowned terroirs of Burgundy, which inspired Josh Jensen to establish the Calera winery in this region. These soils contribute to the wine’s unique minerality and aging potential.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Herb-Roasted Chicken: The wine’s bright acidity and layered fruit complement the savory herbs and richness of roasted chicken.
  • Grilled Salmon with Black Pepper Crust: The peppery finish of the wine echoes the spice in the dish, while the fruit flavors balance the richness of the salmon.
  • Duck Breast with Plum Sauce: The wine’s cherry and cola notes pair beautifully with the sweet-tart flavors of the plum sauce, while the soft tannins complement the tender duck.
  • Aged Gouda: The wine’s rich, fruit-driven profile and long finish pair wonderfully with the nutty, caramelized flavors of aged Gouda.

History of Calera Wines Estate

The story of Calera Wines begins in 1975, when Josh Jensen, inspired by his experience at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Burgundy, set out to replicate the unique terroir he had encountered in France. After studying at Yale and Oxford, Jensen worked at renowned Burgundy estates, where he developed a passion for Pinot Noir and the limestone soils essential to producing great wines. Determined to find a similar environment in California, Jensen spent two years searching for the ideal site and finally discovered it on Mt. Harlan, in the Gavilan Mountains.

In 1975, Jensen purchased a remote, limestone-rich parcel of land and planted his first three estate vineyards: Jensen, Reed, and Selleck. These vineyards, located at an elevation of over 670 meters (2,200 feet), are some of the highest and coolest vineyard sites in California, ideal for producing elegant and age-worthy wines. The winery was named "Calera," the Spanish word for limekiln, in reference to the limestone kiln still standing on the property, a nod to the terroir’s rich calcareous soils.

Over the years, Calera has gained a reputation as one of California’s finest producers of Pinot Noir, and Jensen worked tirelessly to establish the Mt. Harlan American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1990. Today, Calera is revered for its terroir-driven wines, including single-vineyard Pinot Noirs that express the unique character of the Mt. Harlan vineyards.

Region and Vineyards

The Mt. Harlan AVA, where Calera is located, is known for its extreme climate and elevation. Situated in the Gavilan Mountains, about 40 kilometers east of Monterey Bay, the vineyards benefit from the cooling marine air that sweeps over the site, maintaining lower temperatures compared to other wine regions in California. This allows for a long growing season, which preserves the natural acidity of the grapes while encouraging slow, even ripening.

The vineyards of Mt. Harlan are planted in limestone-rich soils, which contribute to the wines' signature minerality and structure. The estate’s vineyards are some of the highest in California, with elevations reaching up to 760 meters (2,500 feet). The winery owns six vineyard parcels, including Jensen, Reed, Selleck, Mills, de Villiers, and Ryan, all known for producing world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Wine Range

Calera produces a range of wines that highlight the unique terroir of Mt. Harlan and the Central Coast. Their portfolio includes:

  • Single-Vineyard Pinot Noirs: From the Jensen, Selleck, Reed, Ryan, Mills, and de Villiers vineyards, these wines are the flagship of Calera’s production, each expressing the individual characteristics of its site.
  • Chardonnay: The Mt. Harlan Chardonnay is known for its rich texture and minerality, reflecting the limestone soils.
  • Viognier and Aligoté: Produced in small quantities, these varietals showcase the winery’s dedication to crafting wines with finesse.
  • Central Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: These wines, sourced from premier vineyards across the Central Coast, offer excellent value and are crafted with the same attention to detail as the estate wines.

Did you know?

Josh Jensen was one of the earliest pioneers to recognize the potential of California Pinot Noir. His decision to plant vineyards on Mt. Harlan was considered audacious at the time due to its remote location and challenging growing conditions. Despite these obstacles, Calera is now regarded as one of the only wineries in the world with its own AVA, and Robert Parker once referred to it as “California’s Romanée-Conti”.

James Suckling (JS) : 94 Points (2019)
Plum, dried strawberry and rose stem aromas. Full-bodied, layered and savory with fine tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Juicy and bright. Drink or hold.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 94 Points (2019)
Showing lighter in the glass, this bottling from 1988 vines offers dark mulberry fruit on the complex nose alongside turned earth, juniper and toasty cappuccino notes. The gamy elements are well integrated on the palate, where coffee bean, roasted plum and bay leaf extend into a caramelkissed finish.

Wines & Spirits (W&S) : 93 Points (2019)
Redolent of blood and cloves, brown spices and sanguine tinges, this wine is fascinating if a bit unformed. The flavors are concentrated and the spice runs deep, surrounding its core, so, if you don’t cellar this, consider decanting it an hour before pouring with a dish with melded flavors, like lamb tagine.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 91 Points (2019)
Well-proportioned, with a juicy core of black cherry and mulberry fruit flanked by judicious toast. Sleek acidity drives the finish, where red tea and spice accents fill in. Built for cellaring. Drink now through 2030.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 94 Points (2018)
The 2018 Pinot Noir Ryan Vineyard is quite deep and heady in this vintage. Red fruit, iron, white pepper and savory herbs give the Ryan its distinctly incisive, feral personality. Hints of blood orange, raspberry and spice add an exotic flair. There is plenty of character here, that is for sure.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 94 Points (2017)
Lots of dried herbs, leather, redcurrants, and a touch of sassafras emerge from the medium-bodied 2017 Pinot Noir Ryan Vineyard. With a rounded, elegant texture, beautiful acidity, and a terrific, lengthy finish, it opens up nicely with time in the glass and is just a complex, nuanced beauty to enjoy over the coming decade.

Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2017)
The 2017 Pinot Noir Ryan Vineyard, aged 17 months in 30% new French oak, has a pale to medium ruby-purple color and is youthful and shy to begin. With coaxing, aromas of prosciutto, wild blackberries, lemon peel and redcurrants emerge, with nuances of oolong tea leaves and dusty earth. Medium-bodied, it's broody and earthy with lifted citrusy accents in the mouth, a finely grained frame and juicy freshness on the finish.
