Region and Vineyards

The Jensen Vineyard, located in the Mt. Harlan mountains at an average altitude of 670 meters (2,200 feet), is one of California’s coolest and highest vineyard sites. Just 40 kilometers from Monterey Bay, this vineyard benefits from a cool climate, ideal for growing Pinot Noir. The soils are rich in limestone, which adds a subtle minerality and contributes to the elegant character of the wines produced here.

This vintage began with spring rains that replenished the soils of Mt. Harlan, setting the stage for an exceptional harvest. Budbreak occurred in late March, and the growing season enjoyed sunny days and cool nights, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and preserving the natural acidity that is highly prized in this wine. The result is a wine with incredible freshness, purity, and precise varietal flavors.

Winemaking

The Jensen Vineyard Pinot Noir is made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, vinified using traditional techniques. The grapes were fermented with 100% whole clusters in open-top fermenters with indigenous yeast. The wine was then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which were new and 70% neutral, ensuring a balanced oak influence that enhances the wine’s complexity without overwhelming its bright fruit profile.

This careful aging process allowed the wine to develop its rich texture and depth, while maintaining the elegance and finesse characteristic of the old vines, which are over 40 years old.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Deep ruby with brilliant highlights.
  • Aroma: A complex and expressive bouquet of wild strawberry, rhubarb, pomegranate, and black cherry, with hints of earth and cocoa adding depth.
  • Palate: On the palate, the flavors deepen, with notes of blueberry, juicy blackberry, and a touch of chocolate. The vibrant acidity provides freshness and energy, while the finish is long and dramatic, leaving a lingering impression of dark fruit and spice.

Did you know?

The Jensen Vineyard is one of Calera’s oldest vineyards, planted by the visionary founder Josh Jensen in 1975. Named in honor of his father, this vineyard is renowned for producing some of California’s most elegant and complex Pinot Noirs, thanks to its old vines rooted in the unique limestone soils of Mt. Harlan.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Roast Duck with Cherries: The deep fruit flavors of the Pinot Noir complement the richness of the duck, while the wine’s acidity balances the sweetness of the cherries.
  • Beef Tenderloin with Wild Mushrooms: The silky texture and earthy notes of the wine pair beautifully with the mushrooms, while the wine’s tannins match the tenderness of the beef.
  • Soft-Ripened Cheese: The black fruit and cocoa notes in the wine pair deliciously with creamy soft cheese, creating a refined and balanced pairing.
  • Truffle Risotto: The richness of the risotto and the unique aroma of truffle find balance with the depth and minerality of the Pinot Noir, making for an elegant and indulgent pairing.

History of Calera Wines Estate

The story of Calera Wines begins in 1975, when Josh Jensen, inspired by his experience at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in Burgundy, set out to replicate the unique terroir he had encountered in France. After studying at Yale and Oxford, Jensen worked at renowned Burgundy estates, where he developed a passion for Pinot Noir and the limestone soils essential to producing great wines. Determined to find a similar environment in California, Jensen spent two years searching for the ideal site and finally discovered it on Mt. Harlan, in the Gavilan Mountains.

In 1975, Jensen purchased a remote, limestone-rich parcel of land and planted his first three estate vineyards: Jensen, Reed, and Selleck. These vineyards, located at an elevation of over 670 meters (2,200 feet), are some of the highest and coolest vineyard sites in California, ideal for producing elegant and age-worthy wines. The winery was named "Calera," the Spanish word for limekiln, in reference to the limestone kiln still standing on the property, a nod to the terroir’s rich calcareous soils.

Over the years, Calera has gained a reputation as one of California’s finest producers of Pinot Noir, and Jensen worked tirelessly to establish the Mt. Harlan American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1990. Today, Calera is revered for its terroir-driven wines, including single-vineyard Pinot Noirs that express the unique character of the Mt. Harlan vineyards.

Region and Vineyards

The Mt. Harlan AVA, where Calera is located, is known for its extreme climate and elevation. Situated in the Gavilan Mountains, about 40 kilometers east of Monterey Bay, the vineyards benefit from the cooling marine air that sweeps over the site, maintaining lower temperatures compared to other wine regions in California. This allows for a long growing season, which preserves the natural acidity of the grapes while encouraging slow, even ripening.

The vineyards of Mt. Harlan are planted in limestone-rich soils, which contribute to the wines' signature minerality and structure. The estate’s vineyards are some of the highest in California, with elevations reaching up to 760 meters (2,500 feet). The winery owns six vineyard parcels, including Jensen, Reed, Selleck, Mills, de Villiers, and Ryan, all known for producing world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Wine Range

Calera produces a range of wines that highlight the unique terroir of Mt. Harlan and the Central Coast. Their portfolio includes:

  • Single-Vineyard Pinot Noirs: From the Jensen, Selleck, Reed, Ryan, Mills, and de Villiers vineyards, these wines are the flagship of Calera’s production, each expressing the individual characteristics of its site.
  • Chardonnay: The Mt. Harlan Chardonnay is known for its rich texture and minerality, reflecting the limestone soils.
  • Viognier and Aligoté: Produced in small quantities, these varietals showcase the winery’s dedication to crafting wines with finesse.
  • Central Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay: These wines, sourced from premier vineyards across the Central Coast, offer excellent value and are crafted with the same attention to detail as the estate wines.

Did you know?

Josh Jensen was one of the earliest pioneers to recognize the potential of California Pinot Noir. His decision to plant vineyards on Mt. Harlan was considered audacious at the time due to its remote location and challenging growing conditions. Despite these obstacles, Calera is now regarded as one of the only wineries in the world with its own AVA, and Robert Parker once referred to it as “California’s Romanée-Conti”.

James Suckling (JS) : 97 Points (2020)
A more tannin-driven pinot with dried strawberry and lemongrass character. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and a fresh and vivid finish.

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2020)
Shows nice contrast, with a fairly broad black cherry and mulberry fruit core, which is eventually harnessed through the finish by racy red tea and mineral notes. Offers generous lively, savory chaparral notes that dart around, lending a mouthwatering edge. Delivering lovely range and character, this should develop nicely in the cellar. Best from 2025 through 2035. 1,000 cases made.

Wine Enthusiast (WE) : 92 Points (2020)
Ripe and heavily extracted on the nose, this bottling offers dried plum, wild juniper and strong leather aromas on the nose. The palate is packed with wild chaparral herb flavors that enliven the baked red fruit and spicy leather flavors.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 94 Points (2019)
The 2019 Pinot Noir Jensen Vineyard is all class. Floral and bright, with terrific nuance, the Jensen is so impressive. Vibrant acids lift a core of sweet red berry fruit, rose petal, mint, cedar, cinnamon and blood orange. This is another Pinot in this range that is so harmonious right out of the gate. There's real dimension and complexity here.

Jeb Dunnuck (JD) : 99 Points (2017)
My favorite in the lineup, the 2017 Pinot Noir Jensen Vineyard is stunning in every way. Gorgeous black raspberry fruits, lots of floral, scorched earth, and sappy herb aromatics, medium to full-bodied richness, flawless balance, and a great finish all make for one of the most captivating Pinot Noirs in the vintage. It's brilliant today yet should easily evolve for 15 years or more.

Robert Parker (RP) : 93 Points (2017)
Aged 17 months in 20% new oak, the pale to medium ruby colored 2017 Pinot Noir Jensen Vineyard is scented of cranberries, Earl Grey tea, dried flowers, dust, crushed stone, dried thyme and blackberries with hints of mushrooms, tree bark and cured meats. The palate is light to medium-bodied and intense with very pretty layers, a gently grainy frame and a long, juicy, nuanced finish.
