Wonderfully complex aromas of fern leaf, rhubarb, potpourri and rose petal contrast with more mineral notes of dust, graphite and gravel. The palate melts into supple, fine tannins giving a robust structure to the wine. The overall impression is silky, with excellent acidity creating a vibrant palate with a long finish.

Vineyards: To find suitable plots for planting, 60 soil pits were dug and 10 Pinot Noir clones were selected with five different rootstocks tailored to the different soil profiles. Burn Cottage has the unique distinction of being the first and only Central Otago estate that has been biodynamic since day one, Ted Lemon’s one stipulation for his involvement.

Vinification: The winemaking at Burn Cottage reflects biodynamic principles with low intervention. There is no addition of yeasts or bacteria for fermentations, sulphur use is minimal and there is no filtration before bottling. 31% of the Pinot Noir grapes were whole-bunch fermented to achieve an aromatic, lifted fragrance. The wine was aged in French barrels, 19% of which were new oak.

This is a terrific pinot noir - great to drink now despite the sneaking feeling that it's going to get even better with bottle age. Totally seductive ripe cherry, berry and plum flavours with added complexity from subliminal floral, spice, savoury and herb. The texture is to die for and the wine has impressive power as evidenced by a lingering finish that won't quit. (10/2018)

Wine Spectator (WS) : 94 Points (2016)
Elegant and focused, featuring fresh raspberry and cherry flavors at the core, with a creamy texture, accents of cinnamon and clove, and dried herbal and black tea notes echoing in the background. All the elements are harmonious on the long finish. Drink now through 2033. (MW) (9/2019)

Jancis Robinson (JR) : 17.5 Points (2016)
Light cherry. Much more open and aromatic than the 2012. Full of lively red fruit and those crushed herbs again. Smooth and compact on the palate, multiple very fine layers. Less open on the palate than on the nose. Needs time. 17.5/20 points. (JH) (1/2018)

Burghound (BH) : 91 Points (2013)
An attractively fresh and cool red and dark pinot fruit nose offers up hints of plum, tea and spice. The delicious, round and velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors possess solid volume before terminating in a dusty, sappy and well-balanced finale. This is already drinking well even though the flavors and finish are shaped by a moderately firm tannic spine. While this isn't super-complex I suspect that if this was aged another 3 to 5 years that more depth would develop. Worth trying.

For centuries, farmers made offerings in hope for a miracle – as Amalaya translates in the local language – for a bountiful harvest. It is located at 1,800 meters above sea level, in the Calchaqui Valley, northwest of Argentina. The region stands out as one of the highest vineyards in the world, characterized by its dry climate with no more than 150 mm annual rainfall, with significant thermal amplitude; rocky and sandy soil.
