Region and Vineyards

The Kamptal DAC in Lower Austria is one of the country's most distinguished wine-growing regions, known for its picturesque, terraced vineyards. The region takes its name from the Kamp River, which influences the microclimate, providing the ideal conditions for slow ripening.

The grapes for Grüner Veltliner Kamptaler Terrassen are sourced from terraced vineyards surrounding Langenlois, the region's viticultural heart. The terraces feature two key types of soils that shape the wine's character:

  • Primary rock soils in the upper terraces, composed of granite and mica slate, lend the wine a pronounced minerality and freshness.
  • Loess soils in the lower terraces contribute richness, body, and ripe fruit flavors, adding to the wine's complexity.

This blend of terroirs and elevations results in a wine that balances vigor and elegance, perfectly expressing the Kamptal region's unique qualities.

Winemaking

The grapes for Grüner Veltliner Kamptaler Terrassen are hand-harvested to ensure precision and quality. Following careful sorting, the juice undergoes fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled, cool temperatures. This preserves the wine's vibrant fruit character and lively acidity.

To enhance texture and complexity, the wine is matured on its fine lees for several months before bottling. This method maintains the wine's freshness while introducing subtle layers of richness and finesse, ensuring a pure and authentic expression of Grüner Veltliner.

Tasting Notes

  • Color: Bright, pale yellow with greenish highlights.
  • Aroma: Fresh and youthful, with inviting notes of green apple, citrus zest, and delicate hints of white flowers and herbs. Subtle undertones of spice and minerality complete the bouquet.
  • Palate: Crisp and refreshing, with flavors of pear, apple, and a touch of lime. The wine's lively acidity and fine texture are beautifully complemented by a gentle hint of white pepper on the finish, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and minerality.

Did You Know?

Grüner Veltliner, Austria's flagship grape variety, is renowned for its versatility and ability to age gracefully. Wines from Kamptal, particularly those grown on the terraces, are prized for their crisp acidity, spice, and clear expression of terroir.

  • Sushi and sashimi: Its crisp, clean profile pairs beautifully with the fresh, subtle umami of raw fish.
  • Asian-inspired dishes with mild spice: The wine's white pepper notes complement dishes like Thai green curry or ginger soy chicken.
  • Wiener Schnitzel: A classic Austrian pairing, where the wine's freshness balances the richness of the dish.

History of Bründlmayer

The Bründlmayer estate is a family-owned winery with roots that trace back several generations. Under the leadership of Willi Bründlmayer, who took over the reins in the 1980s, the estate rose to international prominence. Willi’s visionary approach, emphasizing sustainability and respect for the environment, transformed Bründlmayer into one of Austria’s most acclaimed producers.

Willi Bründlmayer pioneered innovative techniques, such as the introduction of the Lyra trellis system, which enhances the health and quality of the vines. This, coupled with his commitment to showcasing the unique terroir of Kamptal, positioned the winery as a global leader in single-vineyard expressions.

Today, the estate is managed by Willi Bründlmayer and his family, who continue to uphold its legacy of sustainability, precision winemaking, and elegance.

Region and Vineyards

The Bründlmayer vineyards are situated in the heart of the Kamptal DAC, one of Austria’s most celebrated wine regions, known for its exceptional conditions for white wines, particularly Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. The estate owns approximately 80 hectares of vines, planted on diverse soils ranging from loess and loam to primary rock (gneiss, mica-schist, and granite).

Among the estate’s iconic sites are:

  • Zöbinger Heiligenstein: Famous for its Permian desert sandstone soils, this vineyard is considered one of the best sites for Riesling in Austria, producing wines with remarkable minerality and finesse.
  • Kammerner Lamm: Known for its calcareous clay and loess soils, this vineyard produces powerful and structured Grüner Veltliner, with richness and aging potential.
  • Steinmassl: A high-altitude site with gneiss and mica-schist soils, yielding elegant, mineral-driven Rieslings with great precision.

The estate’s vineyards are farmed sustainably, with great attention to soil health, biodiversity, and minimal intervention, ensuring the best expression of the region’s unique terroir.

Wine Range of Bründlmayer

Bründlmayer produces a diverse range of wines that highlight the estate’s versatility and dedication to quality:

  • Single-Vineyard Rieslings: Wines like Zöbinger Heiligenstein and Steinmassl are celebrated for their purity, aromatic precision, and aging potential.
  • Grüner Veltliner: From the approachable Langenloiser to the rich and age-worthy Kammerner Lamm, Bründlmayer’s Grüner Veltliners showcase the varietal’s depth and versatility.
  • Sparkling Wines: Crafted using the traditional method, these wines reflect the estate’s innovation and attention to detail, offering vibrant acidity and finesse.
  • Chardonnay and Pinot Noir: Limited-production wines that highlight the estate’s ability to produce exceptional Burgundian-style wines in Austria.

Did You Know?

Bründlmayer was one of the first Austrian wineries to adopt the Lyra trellis system, where the vines are trained in a “Y” shape. This technique doubles the leaf canopy, promoting better ripening, reducing disease risk, and enhancing the overall quality of the grapes.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2023)
Cool and elegant, yet juicy and wonderfully fresh, this medium-bodied gruner vetliner has the garden herb and celery aromas of the grape. As lightly as this skips over the palate, and as crisp as it is in the finish, there’s very good substance here. It should stay fresh for quite a few years. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2023)
Just bottled with 12.5% stated alcohol, the incredibly charming 2023 Grüner Veltliner Terrassen opens with an irresistible, pure, bright and intense as well as coolish and aromatic bouquet of white seed fruits yet also a saline background. Lean, fresh and juicy on the palate, this is a medium-bodied, saline, savory and highly stimulating Veltliner that will probably never tastes as attractive as in its first year after bottling. It's an irresistible picture-book Veltliner. Screw cap. Tasted end of March 2023.(SR)

Yeast and a subtle note of sage are timid on the nose. The light palate then adds green-pear freshness, while an edge of white pepper completes this picture of subtlety and freshness. This is brisk and crisp with a real refreshment factor. Terry Theise Estate Selections.
