Region and Vineyards

This wine is sourced from two key Stellenbosch vineyard parcels: the northwest-facing slopes of the Helderberg Mountain and the southeast-facing slope of Vlottenburg.

  • The vines thrive in a combination of decomposed granite soils, Table Mountain sandstone, and koffieklip, contributing to the wine’s hallmark minerality and layered complexity.
  • The maritime influence of False Bay moderates the climate, ensuring cool, steady ripening. The 2021 growing season featured a cool, damp winter, followed by moderate, dry conditions during flowering and ripening, resulting in small berries with concentrated flavors and balanced acidity.

Winemaking

The 2021 vintage was vinified entirely at the Boekenhoutskloof winery, focusing on gentle extraction to achieve a refined claret-like structure. Grapes were hand-harvested, cooled, and carefully destemmed before a cold maceration period in tulip-shaped concrete tanks.

Fermentation occurred spontaneously at temperatures between 27°C and 30°C, with pump-overs and occasional délestage to extract color, tannins, and aromas. Following fermentation, a prolonged malolactic fermentation took place in 225-liter French oak barriques. The wine was then aged for 22 months in 60% new French oak barrels from renowned coopers Sylvain and Saury, enhancing its texture and complexity.

Tasting Notes

  • Aroma: Intense and concentrated, with aromas of plum, violet, and sleek spiciness, complemented by subtle notes of anise and earthiness.
  • Palate: The midpalate is pure and vibrant, offering flavors of blackberries, blueberries, and dark licorice, with peppery undertones. Full-bodied and complex, the wine displays plush tannins and a vibrant acidity.
  • Finish: Sweet tobacco and black cardamom linger on a long, charred finish, accented by nuances of iron fer and tar.

Did you know?

The Helderberg Mountain region, often referred to as the "Golden Triangle" of Stellenbosch, is famous for producing some of South Africa’s most refined and structured Cabernet Sauvignons. The meticulous use of the OXOline system for barrel aging at Boekenhoutskloof minimizes handling, preserving the wine’s purity and complexity.

Wine Pairing Ideas

  • Grilled ribeye steak with chimichurri: The wine’s robust tannins and vibrant acidity complement the rich flavors of the steak and the herbal brightness of the chimichurri.
  • Lamb shank with rosemary and garlic: The earthy notes and plush texture pair beautifully with the tender, slow-cooked lamb.
  • Beef bourguignon: The wine’s dark fruit and spice profile enhance the savory depth of this classic dish.
  • Aged cheddar or smoked Gouda: The wine’s complexity and charred finish harmonize with the sharp, smoky flavors of these cheeses.

History of Boekenhoutskloof

The name Boekenhoutskloof translates to "ravine of the Boekenhout," referencing the indigenous Cape Beech tree, historically cherished for its use in fine furniture-making. Established in 1776, the estate boasts a long and storied history, marked by its revitalization in 1993, when the farm and homestead underwent extensive restoration. This pivotal moment also saw the launch of an ambitious replanting program, introducing a mix of Rhône and Bordeaux varieties, including Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon, and Viognier.

Marc Kent joined the estate during this transformative era and quickly established Boekenhoutskloof as a pioneer of South African fine wine. Known for his innovative winemaking, Kent has embraced both traditional and experimental techniques to craft wines of exceptional quality. His efforts have earned the estate global recognition, particularly for its Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, which epitomize terroir-driven winemaking.

One of the estate's unique tributes to its heritage is the Seven Chairs label, which celebrates the craftsmanship of 18th- and 19th-century Cape furniture makers. The intricately designed chairs symbolize the harmony between natural beauty and human artistry, a philosophy that mirrors the estate’s approach to winemaking.

Region and Vineyards

Situated in the Franschhoek Valley, Boekenhoutskloof benefits from a rich and varied terroir. The estate’s vineyards are planted on a mix of alluvial soils, found in the valley floor, and granite and sandstone formations, particularly on higher slopes. These diverse soil types contribute to the distinctiveness of its wines, with each vineyard site imparting unique characteristics.

The estate also draws on fruit from Porseleinberg in the Swartland region, particularly for its acclaimed Syrah. The mica-schist soils of Porseleinberg are exceptionally challenging but yield grapes of profound concentration and minerality. Similarly, their Goldmine vineyards on Kasteelberg’s slopes add depth and structure to their Rhône-style wines.

Franschhoek itself is known for its unique climate, influenced by the Cape’s maritime breezes, which moderate temperatures and ensure slow, steady ripening. This creates ideal conditions for both white and red grape varieties, resulting in wines that balance freshness, elegance, and power.

Boekenhoutskloof has also taken significant steps toward sustainability. The estate holds a certificate from the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) and manages its Franschhoek vineyards organically, certified by Ceres. Its conservation efforts include the removal of invasive plants and the reintroduction of native species, such as the rare Erica lerouxiae, which grows exclusively on the estate and its neighboring farm. Boekenhoutskloof is also a founding member of the Franschhoek Mountain Conservancy, dedicated to preserving the region’s unique biodiversity.

Wine Range of Boekenhoutskloof

Boekenhoutskloof produces a wide array of wines, highlighting both the estate’s heritage and its innovative approach:

  • Syrah: Iconic wines from Swartland’s Porseleinberg and Goldmine vineyards, celebrated for their structure and minerality.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon: Expressive and elegant, sourced from Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, with a focus on complexity and finesse.
  • Semillon: Crafted from heritage vines, some dating back to 1902, these wines are renowned for their depth and aging potential.
  • Grenache and Viognier: Rhône varieties that bring aromatic vibrancy and balance to the range.

Each label bears the Seven Chairs, a nod to the estate’s Cape heritage, reflecting its dedication to tradition and artistry.

The estate’s iconic figurehead, depicted on its labels, is inspired by an early silver hallmark from the Cape of Good Hope. Carrying a dove of peace and hope, she represents Boekenhoutskloof’s pursuit of quality and harmony between tradition, innovation, and sustainability.

Tim Atkin (TA) : 95 Points (2021)
Gottfried Mocke sources this Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon from two growers - one on the Helderberg, the other in Stellenbosch Kloof - to produce what is always the denser than its companion Franschhoek bottling. Inky and grippy, with top notes of menthol, mocha and dried herbs, lots of energy and vibrancy and a core of plum, blueberry and cassis.2025-35

Decanter (DCT) : 93 Points (2021)
Compared to the Franschhoek cuvée, the Stellenbosch bottling is almost reassuringly ripe and flattering with crème de mure, cassis and black cherry fruit on a plush, pencilly palate with integrated, creamy, spicy oak. It certainly shows more immediate richness and generosity than its cellarmate. Juicy and plush with a sense of depth and ripeness counterbalanced by attractively chewy, pliant tannins. The wine is made with spontaneous fermentation and aged for 22 months in 60% new oak, lightly toasted and long-seasoned.

James Suckling (JS) : 93 Points (2021)
#93 TOP 100 WINES OF SOUTH AFRICA - Pretty nose of blackcurrants, sage, blackberry leaves and nutmeg. Firm and well-framed, with a full body and solid tannin structure. Excellent freshness, too. Drink or hold.

Robert Parker (RP) : 92 Points (2021)
The 2021 Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon follows the trend of previous vintages. The wine begins with a dusty and firm profile with broad shoulders and a tight tannic grip. It is softly herbal and spicy, featuring hints of mint, granite and pencil lead, culminating in a still-tight finish. This bottle would benefit from some additional years of aging. After the wine aged for 22 months in 60% new French oak, 34,474 bottles were filled. This promises to evolve beautifully with patience.

Vinous (Antonio Galloni) (VN) : 91 Points (2021)
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Stellenbosch contains no Cabernet Franc. It is matured 60% in new French barriques for 22 months. This is more compact on the nose than the Franschhoek bottling with darker fruit, perhaps a little more Old World inspired. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp and focused. It’s edgier than the Franschhoek cuvée, full of energy with a focused, graphite-infused finish lingering long in the mouth. Excellent.
